What’s actually slowing this PC down?

AI subject selection can make targeted photo edits faster, but a selection is only the starting point. In Lightroom Classic, use a Subject mask to adjust the person or object, or a Background mask to work on the surroundings. Use object removal when you want to erase a distraction, and generative background tools when you want to change the scene. Those are different jobs, and fine edges still need inspection.
Choose the edit before choosing the AI tool
Decide what should change in the photograph. A subject mask isolates a person or object so you can adjust its brightness, color, or other local settings. A background mask targets the surroundings instead. Background blur is a selective finishing effect; object removal fills an unwanted area; background replacement changes the scene. Treating these as interchangeable can lead to an edit that misses the goal.

- Adjust the subject: select the subject and apply local tonal or color changes.
- Adjust or blur the background: create a background mask, then make a separate, restrained adjustment if blur suits the image.
- Remove a distraction: select the unwanted area and use a removal tool that fills it from surrounding image content.
- Replace the background: use a generative workflow intended to create or blend a substantially changed scene.
Make a selective edit in Lightroom Classic
Lightroom Classic’s Masking tool can automatically select a subject or create a separate Background mask. Adobe’s help documentation, last updated August 7, 2026, describes both options: Lightroom Classic masking.

- Choose Select Subject when the person or object is what you want to edit. If the surroundings are the target, create a Background mask instead.
- Apply local adjustments to the chosen area. Keep them consistent with the light and color already present in the photograph.
- If you want a subject-only preset or background blur, apply it as a deliberate selective treatment rather than assuming selection itself creates that look. Adobe’s Lightroom feature notes describe subject-only preset application and background blurring: Lightroom features.
- Inspect the mask and the whole image before exporting. Correct visible spill or missed areas, especially where the subject meets the background.
Check hair and other difficult edges
Hair, translucent details, and complex outlines are difficult because the boundary between subject and background is not always clear. Zoom in and look for background color carried into the subject, clipped strands, or an uneven halo. Then zoom back out: an edge can look tidy at high magnification while the overall treatment still feels detached or too dramatic.

Adobe announced on June 17, 2025, that cloud-powered processing had been enhanced for Select Subject and Remove Background, including work with hair, complex edges, and fine details. That is Adobe’s description of its feature, not a guarantee that every photograph will produce a clean mask. The announcement is available at Adobe’s June 17, 2025 announcement.
When to remove an object or replace the background
Use removal for a distraction
If the subject is fine but an unwanted object interrupts the scene, a subject mask is not the solution. Lightroom Generative Remove is intended to fill a selected unwanted area by analyzing nearby image content and generating an emulated background. Check the result for continuity in texture, lighting, and repeating patterns; generated fill is not proof of what was originally behind the object. Adobe describes the feature on its Lightroom product page.

Use generative tools for a changed scene
When the aim is a designed or substantially different backdrop, Photoshop’s generative features offer a route for background replacement and blending. This is distinct from refining a mask or filling one small distraction: it changes the scene and calls for a careful check that the new background fits the subject’s edges and visual context. Adobe’s feature overview, last updated May 20, 2026, describes these capabilities: Photoshop generative AI features.
Choose the workflow by the kind of control you need
| Goal | Workflow | What to inspect |
|---|---|---|
| Change subject tone or color | Lightroom Classic Subject mask | Whether the selection includes the full subject and keeps the edit natural |
| Change or blur surroundings | Lightroom Classic Background mask | Edges, blur strength, and whether the background treatment suits the scene |
| Erase an unwanted object | Lightroom Generative Remove | Continuity of the generated fill with nearby content |
| Replace or substantially redesign a backdrop | Photoshop generative features | Blending, edge integration, and whether the new scene makes visual sense |
These workflows address different tasks; Adobe’s feature descriptions do not establish a controlled performance ranking between Lightroom and Photoshop. The amount of edge correction needed depends on the image, so evaluate the actual result rather than assuming an automatic selection is finished.
