Put smart-home devices on a separate network segment if your router supports it. For many homes, a guest Wi-Fi network is the simplest place to start; VLANs with routing and access rules offer more control but require compatible equipment and configuration. Verify the exact router’s isolation behavior: a feature label alone does not prove that devices on the guest network are blocked from the main network.
What network isolation does—and what it does not
Segmentation separates devices into network groups, limiting which groups can communicate. If an IoT device is compromised, separation can make it harder for that device to reach trusted computers or other network resources. NIST describes segmentation as a way to limit the spread of a compromise, not as a guarantee that a device cannot be compromised or cause harm.

Isolation also does not automatically mean that every smart-home feature will keep working. Devices and apps may rely on local-network discovery or communication, and compatibility depends on the equipment and configuration. After moving devices, check the functions you actually use—such as app control, automations, and voice-assistant connections.

Choose between guest Wi-Fi and VLANs
| Option | Setup complexity | Traffic control | Equipment and verification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Guest Wi-Fi | Usually the simpler, often preconfigured option for home users. | Depends on the router’s implementation; confirm whether guest devices are blocked from the main network and from one another. | Requires a router with guest Wi-Fi. Check the exact model’s documentation and firmware behavior. |
| VLANs with routing and access rules | More involved to design and configure. | More customizable: rules can control traffic between network groups and, depending on the setup, between devices. | Requires compatible networking equipment and correct configuration. Verify the rules and test required device functions. |
NIST describes guest Wi-Fi as a simple way to create a separate wireless network, and VLANs plus routing and access rules as a more customizable approach. Its guidance notes that most home and small-office wireless routers can create an additional guest wireless network separated from the primary network. That general capability is not proof that a particular router isolates it correctly.

Set up a guest or IoT network on your router
- Check the exact router model and firmware. Use the manufacturer’s manual or support documentation to find whether it supports a guest or IoT network and what traffic its isolation controls block. There is no universal menu path: labels and settings vary by manufacturer, model, and firmware version.
- Look for explicit separation from the main network. The documentation should explain whether guest devices are prevented from accessing devices on the primary network. If it is unclear, do not assume that enabling a guest SSID provides the isolation you want.
- Configure the network using the model-specific instructions. Create the separate network and follow the router’s documented isolation settings. Avoid relying on a setting name alone; verify what it does for your hardware and firmware.
- Move smart-home devices to the separate network. Use the device maker’s setup process to change its Wi-Fi connection. Some devices may need to be reset or reconfigured; the exact steps depend on the device.
- Check the functions you need. Confirm that each device reconnects and that its app, automations, and integrations still work. If something fails, consult the device and router documentation before weakening network separation.
- Keep the router updated and review security notices. Install firmware updates and check the vendor’s advisories for your exact model.
When to use VLANs instead
Consider VLAN-based segmentation when guest Wi-Fi does not give you the traffic controls you need and your router, switches, and access points support VLANs and the necessary routing rules. A VLAN creates a separate network group; routing and access rules determine what traffic can cross between groups. Simply placing devices on different VLANs is not enough if the routing configuration still permits unrestricted access.
Plan the rules around required communication rather than assuming every device should be able to reach every other network. NIST’s work on Manufacturer Usage Description (MUD) describes a more granular, capability-dependent approach: a MUD-capable network can allow the communications an IoT device needs and prohibit others. MUD support is not a universal home-router feature.

Why model-specific verification matters
Guest-network isolation can have vulnerabilities. NIST’s National Vulnerability Database describes CVE-2025-46635, a flaw in the Tenda RX2 Pro that allowed a guest user to access other network resources after setting a static IP address in a non-guest subnet. This finding concerns that model and flaw; it does not establish that other routers share the same vulnerability. Check current documentation and security advisories for your own equipment rather than treating the guest-network label as a security guarantee.

NISTIR 8425A sets out cybersecurity requirements for consumer-grade routers; it is useful context for evaluating router security, not a certification of any particular product.

Advanced protection: trusted onboarding
Network separation is one control, not a substitute for managing device identity and security. NIST SP 1800-36, finalized November 25, 2025, describes trusted IoT network-layer onboarding: verifying device and network identity and posture before providing network credentials. This is an advanced capability, not a feature found on every consumer router, so most home users should not expect to enable it through a standard guest-network setting.
