Start in Finder: check the export’s size, kind, and contents, then compare those contents with what you intended to export. A large file alone does not show that anything is wrong. If you need space, preserve a usable copy before moving or deleting anything; macOS Storage settings can show whether the Mac is actually running low.
Check the export in Finder
Locate the exported item, select it in Finder, and open its item information to see its displayed size and other available details. In List view, Finder can show size, kind, and modification date. These details help establish what you are looking at, but a displayed name alone may not reveal what is inside an app package.

Note whether the export is one file, a folder containing multiple files, or a package created by the app. If the size is surprising, check that the expected files are present, look for an obvious duplicate or another export, and preview representative contents before changing or removing anything.

There is no universal expected size for a data export: the appropriate result depends on the application, the selected export settings, and the intended contents. A large export is not, on its own, proof of an error. If its contents or size still do not make sense, consult the exporting app’s documentation or support and ask what that export includes. Without knowing the app and format, it is not possible to identify a specific cause or recommend a particular export setting.

Check the Mac’s available storage
To see whether the export is creating a storage problem, check macOS’s built-in storage overview:
- macOS Ventura 13 or later: Apple menu > System Settings > General > Storage.
- Earlier macOS versions: Apple menu > About This Mac > Storage.
Storage categories help you understand overall disk use. “System Data” (or “Other” on some versions) is a broad category for Apple and third-party files that do not fit a more specific category; it does not explain why a particular export is large.

Preserve the export before cleanup
Do not delete or replace the export until you have checked its contents and confirmed that another usable copy exists if you need one. Moving an item to the Bin does not free its storage space until you empty the Bin. Apple’s guidance on reclaiming space is at Free up storage space on Mac.
Move a verified copy to an external drive if needed
If you need to clear space on the Mac, an external storage device can be a destination for a verified copy. Check that the drive has enough free capacity and can accept the file’s format. If it will not accept the file, Apple recommends checking the drive’s available space and format; USB-C and Thunderbolt are examples of connections for storage devices used with a Mac. Do not erase a disk unless you are sure it contains no data you need. See Move files to another storage device.

Consider Time Machine only when backups are affected
If the concern is slow Time Machine backups or limited backup-disk capacity, a large export may matter when an app updates that large file frequently. Apple notes that “Some apps store data in unusually large files that the app updates frequently.” Because Time Machine backs up changed files again, repeated updates can make backups take longer. Check whether the app supports the way you use it and whether it repeatedly updates one large data file before changing backup exclusions. Apple’s explanation is in If Time Machine takes a long time to back up.
If you are choosing a Time Machine destination, Apple says a backup disk ideally has at least twice the Mac’s storage capacity; its example is a 1 TB Mac paired with an ideally 2 TB backup disk. That is guidance for a Time Machine backup disk, not a capacity requirement for investigating or moving one export. See Backup disks you can use with Time Machine.
