You can invest in Nvidia either by buying NVIDIA Corporation common stock (ticker: NVDA) or by buying shares in a fund that holds Nvidia alongside other investments. Direct shares concentrate your exposure in one company; an exchange-traded fund (ETF) adds other holdings but may still devote a significant portion of its portfolio to Nvidia. NVIDIA says its common stock trades on the Nasdaq Global Select Market.
Choose between NVDA shares and an ETF
| Route | What you own | How Nvidia exposure works | What to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Direct shares | Common stock in NVIDIA Corporation, traded as NVDA. | Your investment is directly exposed to one issuer and its company-specific outcomes. | Your concentration in Nvidia, the company’s risks, and whether your brokerage lets you trade NVDA. |
| ETF | Shares of a fund holding a basket of securities. | You gain exposure to the fund’s other holdings too. Nvidia’s contribution depends on whether the fund holds it and how much of the portfolio it represents; that weight can change. | The fund’s objective and index, current holdings and Nvidia weight, expense ratio, tracking approach, and any account-specific trading costs. |
Neither route is automatically right for every investor. Buying NVDA is a concentrated bet on one company. A broad-market ETF can spread exposure across many companies, but it does not eliminate Nvidia risk if Nvidia is among its holdings.

How ETF exposure to Nvidia works
An ETF does not give you direct ownership of each company in its portfolio. You own fund shares, and the fund’s investment objective and holdings determine how much Nvidia affects your investment. Check the fund provider’s current holdings and prospectus rather than assuming its allocation is fixed.

IVV as a dated example
The iShares Core S&P 500 ETF (IVV) seeks to track an index of large-capitalization U.S. equities, according to its July 31, 2026 summary prospectus. BlackRock’s holdings page listed Nvidia at 8.07% of IVV’s portfolio as of September 10, 2026. The prospectus reported a 0.03% expense ratio. These are dated facts about one fund, not permanent characteristics or a recommendation; holdings and fees can change.

The expense ratio is a fund-level operating expense, not a complete estimate of what you will pay to invest. Your broker may have separate commissions or account fees, and tax treatment and fund availability depend on your location and account. Check current provider documents and local tax rules.
Steps to buy Nvidia shares or an ETF
- Decide what exposure you want. Choose between direct ownership of NVDA and fund shares that include Nvidia among other holdings. If considering a fund, identify its objective and how broadly it invests.
- Check access through your brokerage. Confirm that the security is available to trade in your account and review any commissions, account fees, or other applicable charges.
- Review the current documents. For NVDA, read the company’s latest filings. For an ETF, review its latest prospectus and holdings, including its current Nvidia weight and expense ratio.
- Consider your whole portfolio. Look at your existing exposure to Nvidia and other equities before adding another investment; an ETF that holds Nvidia can add to exposure you already have.
- Check tax and account rules where you live. These depend on your jurisdiction and provider and are not established by the fund’s stated expense ratio.
Risks to understand before investing
Company-specific risk
Owning NVDA ties your investment directly to one company. NVIDIA warns in its filings that risks could harm its business, financial condition, results, or reputation and cause its stock price to decline. The company also says that availability of data centers, energy, and capital to support customers’ AI infrastructure buildout is crucial; shortages could affect revenue and financial performance.

Market volatility
In its quarterly filing for the period ended July 26, 2026, NVIDIA described publicly held equity securities as subject to market-price volatility and referred investors to prior risk factors and the current filing. Its warning states: “Purchasing or owning NVIDIA securities involves investment risks including, but not limited to, the risks described in Item 1A of our Annual Report on Form 10-K for the fiscal year ended January 25, 2026, Item 1A of our Quarterly Report on Form 10-Q for the fiscal quarter ended April 26, 2026, and below.” See NVIDIA’s SEC filings for the filing and current risk disclosures.

A fund can hold many companies and still allocate a material share to Nvidia. Its Nvidia weight can rise or fall as holdings or market values change, and the fund remains exposed to equity-market movements. Review the latest portfolio rather than relying on a past allocation.

Account for Nvidia’s 2024 stock split
NVIDIA effected a 10-for-1 stock split in June 2024, according to the company’s announcement. A split changes the number of shares and per-share figures, not the company’s total value by itself. When comparing historical share counts or per-share prices, check whether the figures have been adjusted for the split.
