Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteRed means a critical stream-health error; yellow means a moderate one. YouTube says red errors may prevent an event from starting or cause viewer problems, while yellow errors may degrade quality. The color indicates severity, not the cause: read the timestamped message beside the Health Indicator for the specific issue and instructions.
What red and yellow mean
| Color | YouTube’s severity | Possible effect | What to do |
|---|---|---|---|
| Red | Critical | May inhibit the event from starting or cause viewers to have problems. | Read the adjacent error text and correct the setting or issue it identifies. |
| Yellow | Moderate | May cause degraded quality in the event. | Read the adjacent error text and address the named issue; do not assume the stream has stopped. |
These severity descriptions come from YouTube Help’s stream-health guidance. The official pages cited here do not define green or publish a complete color legend, so a precise green threshold cannot be given from those sources.

Read the message before changing settings
In Live Control Room, check the message next to the Health Indicator. It includes a timestamp and specific information about the error, often with corrective instructions. YouTube says an error continues to appear if it has not been fixed. The color alone cannot tell you which encoder, audio, video, or network setting to change.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- Note the color and timestamp.
- Read the full message beside the Health Indicator and identify the setting or condition it names.
- Make the correction that matches that message, rather than changing unrelated settings.
- Watch the health messages to see whether the same error persists or recurs.
YouTube’s error-message reference covers format and codec, bitrate, audio and video tracks, frame rate, keyframes, resolution, and primary/backup stream mismatches.

Match common errors to the relevant setting
Format, container, or codec
If the message reports an unsupported format, check the encoder’s output format and codecs. YouTube’s format summary directs creators to H.264 video and AAC audio; specific audio examples also list AAC or MP3 as supported. Follow the exact error and the current encoder guidance rather than assuming every audio-format message has the same fix.
Bitrate or bandwidth
Compare the configured bitrate with the selected ingestion resolution and codec. YouTube’s recommended values vary by format: for example, its encoder table lists 10 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps using AV1 or H.265, and 14 Mbps using H.264; for 720p at 30 fps it lists 6 Mbps for AV1 or H.265, and 8 Mbps for H.264. These are configuration recommendations, not universal targets. Check the current error guidance and encoder settings guidance for the format and resolution you selected. If your connection cannot sustain the chosen bitrate, YouTube’s error guidance says lowering the selected resolution may help.

Compare the stream’s total bitrate with available upload capacity—not download speed. YouTube recommends 20% upload-bandwidth headroom. If you send both primary and backup streams, allow capacity for both streams plus that headroom.

Messages can point to missing or multiple audio/video streams, channel count, interlaced video, or excessive frame rate. Check the specific track and output setting named in the warning; do not infer a track problem from yellow or red alone.

Keyframe frequency
YouTube recommends sending keyframes every 2 seconds and says not to exceed 4 seconds. If the message mentions keyframes or buffering, check the encoder’s keyframe interval against the current YouTube encoder settings.
Resolution
The input dimensions need to match the ingestion resolution selected for the stream. If the warning names resolution, check both the encoder’s output dimensions and the selected ingestion setting.

Primary and backup streams
For failover, the primary and backup configurations need to match on settings such as resolution, codec, bitrate, frame rate, keyframe frequency, and audio. Compare the pair wherever YouTube’s message identifies a mismatch.
Test and monitor the complete setup
Before an event, test with representative movement and audio, check the preview, and monitor picture and sound quality. Confirm that your upload connection has enough capacity for the total stream bitrate with YouTube’s recommended headroom; include both primary and backup traffic if applicable. During the event, keep an eye on timestamped health messages and use their specific instructions to guide changes.
