Connect n8n to Google Sheets by adding the built-in Google Sheets node, authorizing it with OAuth2 (the recommended method) or a service account, selecting the spreadsheet and tab, and then choosing the row operation that matches your workflow. The important design decisions are the credential type, a stable header row, the mapping mode, and whether you need an insert, an update, or an upsert.

What the n8n Google Sheets node can do
n8n provides a built-in Google Sheets node for automating work in Google Sheets and integrating Sheets with other applications. It covers both spreadsheet-level and tab-level tasks, so a workflow can create or remove a spreadsheet as well as read and write rows in an existing tab.
Spreadsheet-level lifecycle
At the document level, the node can create a new spreadsheet, set its initial tab titles, choose a locale, and set a recalculation interval. It can also delete a spreadsheet. These controls are useful when a workflow creates a file for a project, reporting period, or customer and then manages that file without leaving n8n.

Tab and range-level work
For a tab inside a document, the node can create, clear, and delete sheets. It can also remove rows or columns. Row operations include reading data, appending new records, updating existing records, and combining update-or-insert behavior in one operation.
Choose authentication before building the workflow
Google Sheets supports two credential approaches in n8n: OAuth2 and Service Account. OAuth2 is n8n’s recommended method. The choice affects who grants access, how credentials are maintained, and what has to be shared when the workflow runs.

OAuth2 authorizes n8n to act with a Google identity after consent. It is generally the simplest choice when the workflow should use a person’s Google access and when you want authorization to be managed through the normal Google consent flow.
On n8n Cloud, managed OAuth2 can be available, reducing the amount of credential configuration you have to maintain. On a self-hosted n8n installation, you must configure and maintain your own OAuth2 credentials. The exact administration is therefore different even though the Google Sheets node and its operations are the same.
Service Account
A service account gives the workflow a machine identity instead of depending on an individual’s interactive authorization. Google Sheets lists Service Account credentials as compatible with the node. The operational consequence is that access has to be administered for that identity: the spreadsheet must be shared in a way that permits the service account to use it, and the account’s credentials must be maintained securely.
Service accounts can be a better fit for unattended, organization-managed workflows, but they add sharing and credential-administration work. OAuth2 is usually the more direct starting point unless your deployment specifically requires a machine identity.

| Choice | Identity used by the workflow | Access administration | Deployment note |
|---|---|---|---|
| OAuth2 | A Google user identity authorized through consent | User consent and OAuth scope management | n8n Cloud may provide managed OAuth2; self-hosted n8n requires customer-managed OAuth2 credentials |
| Service Account | A Google machine identity | Sharing and permissions must be administered for that service account | Supported for Google Sheets in both deployment styles, with your organization responsible for credential handling |
Connect the node to a spreadsheet and tab
- Add the node. In the workflow editor, add Google Sheets. This is the built-in node used to automate Sheets and pass data between Sheets and other n8n nodes.
- Create or select credentials. Choose an OAuth2 credential, or select a Service Account credential if your deployment uses one. For n8n Cloud, use the managed OAuth2 option when it is offered. For self-hosted n8n, configure your own OAuth2 credentials if you choose OAuth2.
- Select the resource. For work inside a tab, set the resource to Sheet Within Document. Spreadsheet-level actions such as creating or deleting a document use the corresponding document resource exposed by the node.
- Select the spreadsheet. You can choose a spreadsheet from the list, provide its URL, or enter its
spreadsheetId. Using an ID or URL is useful when the file is selected dynamically or is not convenient to find in a list. - Select the tab. Identify the tab by selecting it from the list, providing its URL, entering its
sheetId, or using its name. Make sure the selected tab is the one whose header row and data the workflow is meant to process. - Run a small execution. Test with a representative item before connecting downstream nodes. Inspect the returned item structure in n8n so that later expressions use the actual field names and value types produced by the node.
Prepare the sheet for dependable mapping
Most write errors begin before the Google Sheets node runs: the sheet has inconsistent headings, the incoming JSON uses different property names, or key values contain invisible differences. Prepare the tab deliberately.
Use one stable header row
n8n treats the first row as the headings for normal row reads and normally omits that row from the returned data. Put a single, unambiguous header row at the top of the data region. Keep each heading unique and avoid changing a heading after automatic mappings have been built.

If the first row is actual data rather than headings, change the node’s Data Location setting so n8n does not interpret that data row as column names.
Make automatic mapping names match exactly
Automatic mapping works when incoming JSON property names match the Google Sheets column names. For example, a sheet heading such as order_id expects an incoming property with that name. Differences in capitalization, spaces, punctuation, or spelling can prevent the value from landing in the intended column.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
When upstream data uses different names, insert an Edit Fields node and rename the properties before the Google Sheets node. This keeps the sheet’s headings stable while making the workflow’s input explicit.
Use manual mapping when the schema is not identical
Select manual column mapping when the input object cannot or should not be renamed. Manual mapping lets you associate each sheet column with the desired incoming value, which is safer when a source system has names that you cannot change or when only selected columns should be written.
Normalize keys before matching
For updates and upserts, choose a stable unique key such as an order ID. Normalize that key upstream so that leading or trailing whitespace and type differences do not cause the same logical record to be treated as two different values. A stable key and consistent headers are the foundation for avoiding duplicate rows.
Choose the correct row operation
The node’s row operations are not interchangeable. Decide whether the workflow is inserting a new record, changing an existing record, or doing either depending on whether a match exists.

| Append Row | Adds a new row at the end of the existing data | Every incoming item is a new record and duplicates are acceptable or prevented elsewhere |
| Update Row | Modifies an existing matching row only; it does not append when no match exists | The record must already exist and a missing match should remain an error or no-op rather than create data |
| Append or Update Row | Updates a matching row or appends a new row when no match is found | You need upsert behavior based on a stable match column |
Append Row: insert-only behavior
Use Append Row when the job is to add a record after the current data. The operation does not search for an existing record first, so a retry can create another row unless the workflow prevents duplicate processing.
Update Row: existing records only
Update Row is an update-only operation. It changes a row that matches the configured criteria, but it does not append a new row when there is no match. Choose it when silently creating a missing record would be unsafe.

Append or Update Row: upsert
Append or Update Row combines both paths: n8n looks for a match, updates that row when it exists, and appends a new row when it does not. Configure the match column with a stable unique key, and normalize the key before this node. If the key is inconsistent, an upsert can append what appears to be a duplicate instead of updating the intended row.
Read rows without losing matches or types
Filtering with Get Row(s)
Get Row(s) can read rows and optionally filter by a column and value. A filter that matches more than one row returns only the first matching row by default. That default is convenient for a unique key, but it is wrong for deduplication, reconciliation, or batch processing where every match matters.
When multiple matches are expected, set When Filter Has Multiple Matches to return all matches. Then process the resulting items downstream rather than assuming the node returned a single object.
Prevent the header row from appearing as data
Because n8n normally treats the first row as headings, the header row is omitted from ordinary returned rows. If your sheet starts with data and has no heading row, configure Data Location accordingly. Otherwise, a data row can be interpreted as headings and the rest of the read can appear shifted or incomplete.
Select the representation your next node needs
The node offers three relevant output choices:
- Values (unformatted): use this when downstream logic needs numeric values as numbers rather than display strings.
- Values (formatted): use this when the displayed representation matters, such as a currency string or a date formatted for a person to read.
- Formulas: use this when the formula text itself must be preserved. In this mode, n8n does not calculate the formula output in the node.
Choose the representation at the point where you know what the next step needs. A downstream comparison or arithmetic expression generally needs unformatted values, while an email or report may need the display-formatted version. If another system must receive the formula expression, select Formulas rather than a calculated-looking value.
Build a reliable append workflow
- Shape the incoming item. Use an Edit Fields node to produce properties whose names match the sheet headings, or plan explicit manual mappings.
- Validate the insert key. If the row has an identifier, normalize it before writing. Decide whether duplicate identifiers are allowed; Append Row itself will not enforce uniqueness.
- Select the document and tab. Use the intended spreadsheet and tab, identified by list, URL, ID, or name.
- Choose Append Row. Map each value to its corresponding column.
- Execute one representative item. Inspect the resulting row and the node output before allowing a larger batch to run.
- Connect downstream processing. Use the observed output field names in expressions rather than assuming they match the source object’s original structure.
Build an update-only workflow
- Define the match column. Select a column containing a stable identifier, such as an order ID, and make sure the incoming value is normalized.
- Use Get Row(s) when you need a pre-check. A read can confirm whether the identifier exists and can expose the exact row data needed by later steps.
- Choose Update Row. Configure the match and map only the fields that should change, using manual mapping when the input names differ.
- Decide how to handle a missing match. Because Update Row does not append, route the no-match case according to your workflow’s policy instead of assuming a new record will be created.
- Test an existing and a missing identifier. The two cases confirm that the operation has the intended update-only behavior.
Build an upsert workflow without creating duplicates
- Pick one unique match key. Use a column whose value identifies one logical record. An order ID is a typical example; do not use a display label that can legitimately repeat.
- Normalize the key upstream. Remove accidental whitespace and keep its type consistent so that equivalent values compare the same way.
- Keep the header row and data shape stable. Automatic mapping relies on matching names, and an inconsistent sheet makes both matching and writing harder to reason about.
- Choose Append or Update Row. Configure the key column as the match column and map the fields to write.
- Test both branches. Run one item whose key already exists and one whose key is new. Confirm that the first changes the existing row and the second creates a new row.
- Review retry behavior. An upsert is safer than unconditional append for retried events, but it still depends on the key being present and normalized. A missing or malformed key can send the item down the append path.
Manage spreadsheet and tab structure from n8n
Create a spreadsheet for a workflow
Use the spreadsheet creation capability when a workflow needs a new document rather than a pre-existing file. You can set the initial tab titles, choose a locale, and set a recalculation interval as part of creation. Plan the header row before later row operations depend on automatic mapping.
Create, clear, or delete a tab
At the tab level, the node can create a new sheet, clear its contents, or delete it. Clearing removes the tab’s data while retaining the tab itself; deleting removes the tab. Select the action deliberately because the two lifecycle outcomes are different.
Remove rows or columns
The node can remove rows or columns from a tab. Use this for structural cleanup only when the workflow knows which rows or columns are safe to remove. A structural change can affect the header row and therefore change how later automatic mappings behave.

Delete a spreadsheet
Spreadsheet deletion is a document-level operation. Reserve it for workflows that intentionally retire a file, and keep it separate from ordinary row processing so a mistaken branch cannot remove the entire document when the intended action was to clear a tab.

The first row is returned or interpreted incorrectly
Cause: the node treats the first row as headings by default, but the sheet either has no header row or the data begins on a different row.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Fix: add a stable header row, or set Data Location so the actual first data row is used correctly.
Values are written to the wrong columns
Cause: automatic mapping could not find an exact name match between incoming JSON properties and sheet headings.
Fix: rename the fields in an Edit Fields node, or switch to manual column mapping and associate each value explicitly.
Only one matching row is returned
Cause: Get Row(s) returns the first match by default when a filter matches multiple rows.

Fix: set When Filter Has Multiple Matches to return all matches before running the batch or deduplication logic.
An update creates no row
Cause: Update Row is update-only and does not append when no matching record exists.

Fix: use Append or Update Row when a missing record should be created, or handle the no-match branch explicitly if creation is not allowed.
An upsert creates a duplicate
Cause: the match key differs because of whitespace, inconsistent types, spelling, or a changed heading.

Numbers, dates, or currency look wrong downstream
Cause: the node returned a different representation from the one the next step expects.
Fix: use Values (unformatted) for typed numeric logic, Values (formatted) for display strings, and Formulas when the expression itself must be retained. Remember that formula mode does not calculate formula output in the node.
The service account cannot access the file
Cause: the workflow is using a machine identity that has not been granted the required spreadsheet access.
Fix: administer sharing for the service account identity and confirm that the credential selected in n8n belongs to that account. If a user-authorized connection is more appropriate, use OAuth2 instead.
Quick Recap
A practical decision framework
- Need a person’s Google access and the quickest setup? Start with OAuth2. n8n Cloud may provide managed OAuth2; self-hosted installations require their own OAuth2 configuration.
- Need an unattended machine identity? Use a Service Account and plan the spreadsheet-sharing and credential-administration work that comes with it.
- Every item is new? Choose Append Row.
- Missing records must not be created? Choose Update Row.
- Existing records should change and new ones should be added? Choose Append or Update Row with a normalized unique key.
- Input names differ from headings? Rename fields upstream with Edit Fields or use manual mapping.
- A filter can match several rows? Configure When Filter Has Multiple Matches to return all matches.
- Downstream logic needs actual numbers? Select Values (unformatted); for presentation strings select Values (formatted); for formula expressions select Formulas.
Final preflight checklist
- The selected credential is the intended OAuth2 user or Service Account identity.
- The identity can access the selected spreadsheet.
- The resource is set to Sheet Within Document for tab and row work.
- The spreadsheet and tab are selected by the intended list entry, URL, ID, or name.
- The first row is a deliberate header row, or Data Location is configured for the actual data start.
- Automatic mappings use exact property-to-heading names, or manual mappings are complete.
- The match key is stable, unique, normalized, and present before an update or upsert.
- The operation matches the intended insert, update-only, or upsert behavior.
- Read filters are configured to return all matches when one result is not enough.
- The selected output representation matches the next node’s need for typed values, display strings, or formula text.
- A small representative execution has been inspected before the workflow is connected to larger batches or destructive lifecycle actions.
