Choose reactive forms when form logic needs to be explicit, reusable, or dynamic; choose template-driven forms for a straightforward form whose state and behavior can stay close to the template. Angular also documents Signal Forms, but their stability and fit depend on the Angular version in your project. The examples below show how to connect each approach to a component, validate input, and handle submission.
Which Angular form approach should you use?
Angular’s forms overview presents reactive and template-driven forms as distinct ways to connect user input to an application. In reactive forms, the component defines the form model and the template binds to it. In template-driven forms, directives in the template create and manage that model.

| Consideration | Reactive forms | Template-driven forms |
|---|---|---|
| Where the form model lives | Explicitly in the component | Created and managed through template directives |
| How updates are described | Synchronous model and view updates | Asynchronous data flow |
| How validation is expressed | Validator functions on the model | Template attributes and directives |
| Typical fit | Complex, dynamic, reusable, or heavily tested form logic | Simple forms with behavior that can remain in the template |
These are practical defaults, not restrictions. A small form can use reactive forms, and a template-driven form can still validate input. Prefer the approach that makes the form’s state and rules easiest to maintain in your application.
How do you integrate a reactive form?
Reactive forms keep the source of truth in the component and expose changes through observable streams. Use a FormControl for one value, a FormGroup for named related controls, and a FormArray when the number of controls can change at runtime.
#1 Best Overall
- Import the forms API. Add
ReactiveFormsModulefrom@angular/formsto the standalone component’simports, or to the relevant NgModule in an NgModule-based application. - Define the model. Create the controls in the component class. For a grouped form, create a
FormGroupwhose named controls correspond to the fields in the template. - Bind the view. For one control, use
[formControl]on the input. For a group, bind the form element with[formGroup]and connect each field usingformControlName. - Validate and submit. Attach validators to controls, show feedback based on their state, and ensure the submission path accounts for form validity.
Use a FormArray instead of a fixed group of controls when users can add or remove entries, such as multiple contact methods. If you are building a custom input component that should participate in Angular forms, ControlValueAccessor is the forms API bridge between the control and the DOM-facing form model.
How do you integrate a template-driven form?
Template-driven forms suit a small, uncomplicated form where binding properties and validation rules in the template is convenient. Import FormsModule from @angular/forms in the standalone component’s imports or the appropriate NgModule.

- Bind each input. Use
[(ngModel)]to connect an input to a component property. - Name controls. Give each form control a
nameso Angular can register and track it within the form. - Handle submission. Use the form’s
ngSubmitoutput to call the component’s submission handler. - Use form state. Angular’s
NgFormcreates a top-level form group and aggregates values and validation status; use that state to show feedback or decide whether submission should be available.
Because the model is implicit and data flow is asynchronous, template-driven forms can become harder to manage as form logic grows or needs reuse. Consider a reactive form when those concerns become central.

Angular offers built-in validators and supports custom validation. Match the validation mechanism to the form approach, and connect feedback to both validity and interaction state so users see a relevant message when a field needs correction.

Reactive validation
Attach validator functions to a control. A synchronous validator returns validation errors or null. An asynchronous validator returns a Promise or Observable that later emits errors or null. Angular runs asynchronous validators only after synchronous validation passes, then waits for the asynchronous result before setting errors.
Template-driven validation
Express validation through template attributes and directives, then use the control’s state to decide when to display a message. Angular’s template-driven forms guide covers tracking state and displaying validation errors.

Should you use Signal Forms or mix approaches?
Angular’s current forms guidance lists Signal Forms alongside reactive and template-driven forms. The Signal Forms comparison says the approach is stable in Angular v22 and later; check your project’s version before relying on that status. The comparison discusses source of truth, type safety, validation, state management, setup, and intended use.
You do not need to replace an existing form all at once. Angular’s migration guidance describes compatibility in both directions: a FormGroup can be wrapped for use as a signal form, and a signal form control can be exposed for use in a FormGroup. This allows an existing section to remain in place while you integrate another approach where it makes sense.
