How to Integrate Discord With a Project Zomboid Server

The simplest way to connect a Project Zomboid server to Discord is to use the game’s native Discord settings: enable the integration, add a bot token, and specify channel IDs for chat, logs and commands. If you only need server-to-Discord notifications, a webhook bridge is lighter. If Discord users must restart the server or run administrative commands, use an RCON bot or a control panel. The right choice depends on message direction, hosting platform, privileges and whether the server runs Build 41 or Build 42.

What a Discord integration can do

Discord integration is not one feature with one installation method. It is a set of possible connections between the game server and a Discord guild:

Project Zomboid’s official ServerOptions reference lists the native Discord and RCON fields. Those fields are enough for the integration exposed by the game itself, but they do not constitute a complete Discord-permission tutorial. External bridges, bots and panels add capabilities at the cost of another process, mod or service to maintain.

Choose the architecture before changing the server

Use native settings when the server owner wants the fewest moving parts. Pick a webhook when communication is mainly one-way. Pick RCON when Discord must trigger commands or lifecycle actions. Pick a panel when you also need browser administration, OAuth, telemetry or actions that RCON cannot provide.

Prepare the Discord side safely

Create a bot application

1. Open the Discord developer portal and create an application for this server.
2. Add a bot user to the application.
3. Copy the bot token once it is generated. Treat it like a password: do not paste it into a public chat, commit it to a repository or include it in screenshots.
4. Invite the bot to the target guild.
5. Create or select the channels that will receive chat, logs and command traffic.
6. Copy each channel ID. Discord’s developer-mode tools are required to copy IDs rather than channel names.

Grant only the channel permissions the chosen integration needs. A webhook that posts messages does not need the same privileges as a bot that reads commands and sends RCON requests. The official Project Zomboid reference documents the configuration keys, while the integration projects describe their own deployment assumptions; neither source supplies one universal permission matrix, so review every permission on the bot or webhook you install.

Configure Project Zomboid’s native Discord settings

Fields you can use

The official ServerOptions API lists these relevant keys:

Channel IDs are numeric Discord IDs, not channel names. Keep the token and RCON password private, and make a backup of the active server configuration before editing it.

Apply the configuration

1. Stop the server or follow your host’s documented maintenance procedure so the file is not overwritten while you edit it.
2. Back up the active server .ini.
3. Set discordEnable to enable the integration.
4. Paste the bot token into discordToken without surrounding whitespace.
5. Enter the intended channel IDs in discordChatChannel, discordLogChannel and, if commands are required, discordCommandChannel.
6. If the chosen design uses a webhook, set webhookAddress to the copied webhook URL.
7. Save the file and restart the Project Zomboid server.
8. Test one feature at a time: chat first, logs second, then command handling.

Zomboi’s setup documentation also instructs operators to create a Discord bot, copy its token and place channel IDs in its configuration. It identifies the dedicated-server installation and server-name configuration used by that project; follow its current repository instructions when using that bot rather than assuming the native keys are sufficient for every feature. Use a webhook when you only need notifications

A webhook is appropriate when the desired direction is primarily Project Zomboid to Discord. It avoids giving a Discord user an interactive command surface and is usually easier to reason about than an RCON bot.

Linux or Pterodactyl log forwarding

The Steam Workshop listing for PZ Discord Bridge describes a lightweight server-side integration for Linux dedicated servers and Pterodactyl. Its documented requirements are Project Zomboid Build 41 or later, Bash, a Discord webhook and Discord integration enabled.

1. Create a webhook in the Discord channel that should receive the messages and copy its complete URL.
2. Install and configure the bridge according to its Workshop instructions.
3. Append the documented Bash log-forwarder to the server startup command. On Pterodactyl, edit the startup command in the panel rather than a local shell script that the container never executes.
4. Confirm that the forwarder can read the active server log and that the process has network access to Discord.
5. Start the server and send a controlled test message.

The bridge is a log-forwarding design, so it should not be presented as a full Discord administration system. It also depends on the installed operating system, startup command and Build 41-or-later compatibility described by its listing.

One-way chat with Zomboi

Zomboi posts global in-game chat through a webhook and can include speaker names and, when a matching account is available, Discord avatars. Its documented direction is game to Discord; reverse chat from Discord back into the game is not supported in the project’s documentation. That makes it suitable for community visibility, not for two-way conversations or administrative commands.

Use RCON for commands and scheduled administration

RCON is the bridge to choose when trusted Discord members need to issue server commands, relay chat or manage routine operations. Enable it with the server’s rconPort and rconPassword settings, then configure the bot or panel with the same values.

What an RCON bot can add

Jeeves documents a dedicated-server setup with RCON enabled. Its listed functions include lifecycle control, scheduled restarts, mod-update detection, chat relay, player tracking, rank colors and role-aware administration.

Those features make an RCON bot more powerful than a webhook, but also more dangerous if the Discord role model is too broad. A channel that accepts commands should be private, and command permissions should be limited to named, trusted roles. Do not expose RCON directly to the public internet unless your hosting design, firewall and authentication model explicitly require it. Use a strong, unique password and allow connectivity only from the bot or panel host where your infrastructure supports that restriction.

RCON setup sequence

1. Choose an RCON port that does not conflict with another service.
2. Set rconPort and a strong rconPassword in the active server configuration.
3. Restart the server so the RCON listener loads the new values.
4. Configure the bot with the same host, port and password.
5. Give the bot access to a private command channel and restrict command roles.
6. Test a harmless read-only or informational command before testing restart or shutdown actions.
7. Record who can run lifecycle commands and review the bot’s audit output regularly.

The sources identify the credentials and ports involved, but they do not publish one universal hardening checklist. Apply the controls supported by your host: firewall rules, private networking, role restrictions, secret rotation and log review.

Choose a control panel for broader management

PZ-CRCON

PZ-CRCON is documented as a Dockerized, self-hosted panel for Project Zomboid Build 41 and Build 42. Its documented integration points include Discord OAuth, a static Discord administrator allowlist, RCON and optional Lua telemetry, plus Discord notifications.

This model is useful when Discord identity should be tied to panel access rather than when a bot alone is enough. Docker adds a deployment layer, so map the panel’s network path to the game server and keep the OAuth and administrator settings private.

Zomboid Control Panel

Zomboid Control Panel documents support for Windows, Linux, Docker and hosted setups. Its quick setup configures RCON. Its optional PanelBridge Lua mod adds capabilities that RCON cannot reach, including teleport, healing, weather, character data, inventory editing and sound triggers.

Install the Lua extension only if those extra operations justify the additional mod and maintenance burden. Keep a rollback copy of the server and mod configuration, and verify that the mod supports the exact Build 41 or Build 42 branch installed on the server.

Build 41 and Build 42 compatibility matters

Do not assume that an integration that works on one Project Zomboid branch works unchanged on another. The documented options differ by project: PZ Discord Bridge requires Build 41 or later, while PZ-CRCON explicitly documents Build 41 and Build 42. A Lua extension or Workshop item can also lag behind a new game build even when the bot itself still runs.

• Write down the server’s exact build branch before installation.
• Check the integration project’s current release notes or installation instructions for that branch.
• Test on a copy or maintenance window before updating a live community server.
• After a game update, test chat, logs, command handling and any Lua-powered feature separately.

Test the integration in a controlled order

1. Bot presence: confirm the bot is a member of the intended guild and can see the target channel.
2. Chat relay: send one short global message in-game and verify it appears in the selected Discord channel.
3. Log delivery: trigger a normal, non-destructive event and verify that the log channel receives it.
4. Command path: use a harmless command from the restricted command channel and confirm the expected response.
5. Lifecycle action: only after command permissions are proven, test a scheduled or manual restart during a maintenance window.
6. Recovery: stop the bot or bridge and confirm that the game server itself remains available; then restore the integration process.

Testing one channel at a time makes it possible to distinguish a Discord permission problem from a server configuration problem. Keep the original .ini backup until every test passes.

Troubleshoot the common failures

The bot is online but nothing arrives

• Check that discordEnable is enabled in the active server .ini, not in a similarly named inactive file.
• Verify every channel ID and confirm that the bot is in the correct guild.
• Review channel permissions for viewing, sending and reading messages as required by the integration.
• Confirm the token contains no leading or trailing whitespace and has not been regenerated since it was copied.
• Restart the server after changing the configuration.

Chat works but logs or commands do not

• Check that the log and command channel fields point to the intended numeric IDs.
• Confirm that the bot has access to each channel rather than only the chat channel.
• For command handling, verify that the selected bot or panel actually supports Discord-to-game commands; a webhook-only bridge will not.

RCON commands time out

• Compare the bot’s host, rconPort and rconPassword with the values loaded by the server.
• Check firewall rules, container networking and whether the bot can reach the server host.
• Restart the server after changing RCON settings.
• Confirm that the integration supports the installed Build 41 or Build 42 branch.

Pterodactyl forwarding does not run

• Verify that the Bash forwarder was appended to the startup pipe or command that the container actually executes.
• Check the path to the active server .ini and the log file inside the container.
• Confirm that the container has outbound network access and that the webhook URL is complete.

A Lua-powered panel feature is missing

RCON cannot reach every in-game action. If a panel feature depends on PanelBridge, verify that the Lua mod is installed, enabled and compatible with the current game build. Without that extension, functions such as teleport, healing, weather, character data, inventory editing and sound triggers are outside the documented RCON feature set.

Security and maintenance checklist

• Store bot tokens, webhook URLs and RCON passwords as secrets, not public configuration examples.
• Use separate Discord channels for public chat, operational logs and privileged commands.
• Give bots and webhooks only the permissions required for their direction of traffic.
• Limit command access to trusted roles and review membership when staff changes.
• Back up the server .ini, panel configuration and Lua-mod settings before updates.
• Rotate a token or password immediately if it appears in a chat, log or repository.
• After a Project Zomboid update, retest every integration path before reopening the server.
• Remove abandoned bots, webhooks and panel accounts so old credentials cannot remain active.

Which setup should you use?

For a small server that only needs a visible chat or status channel, start with the native settings or a webhook bridge. For a community that wants scheduled restarts, player tracking and role-based commands, use an RCON bot and isolate its command channel. For multi-server or browser-based operations, a control panel is the more complete choice, especially when OAuth, telemetry or Lua-backed actions are required.

The decisive questions are direction, deployment and privilege: does information move only from the game to Discord, or must Discord control the game; is the host Windows, Linux, Docker or Pterodactyl; and how much authority should a Discord account receive? Answer those first, then configure only the components that meet that requirement.
