How to Insure a High-Value Pokémon Card Collection in the U.S.

A practical U.S. guide to insuring valuable Pokémon cards, with policy comparisons, inventory requirements, appraisal guidance, shipping risks and claim steps.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Start by checking your homeowners or renters policy, then compare a scheduled endorsement or floater with a specialist collectibles policy. High-value Pokémon cards can fall under personal-property coverage while still being subject to special collectible limits, exclusions, deductibles and valuation rules. Ask the insurer to confirm the actual contract terms before relying on the collection’s overall household contents limit.

This guide is U.S.-oriented. Insurance availability, wording and consumer protections differ elsewhere, so collectors outside the United States should consult insurers and regulators in their own jurisdiction.

Why a normal home policy may not fully protect Pokémon cards

A homeowners or renters policy generally covers personal property for specified causes of loss, but collectibles often have category limits or exclusions. A policy might cover theft up to a relatively small sublimit while excluding mysterious disappearance, accidental breakage, market-value increases or losses during shipping. The fact that your policy lists a large total contents limit does not prove that every card is insured for its current value.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Insurance Information Institute (Triple-I) describes two broad ways to increase protection: raise the applicable limit or schedule valuables under a separate floater. A floater can provide broader protection than the base policy, potentially including accidental losses, but the policy’s own definitions and exclusions control. Ask for the relevant wording in writing rather than relying on a summary from a sales representative.

Questions to ask your current insurer

  • Is collectible trading-card property covered, and is there a category-specific sublimit?
  • Which causes of loss are covered: theft, fire, water, accidental damage, loss and mysterious disappearance?
  • Does the deductible apply to the collection as a whole or to each claim?
  • Is settlement based on actual cash value, replacement cost, agreed value or another method?
  • Are cards covered away from the insured address, at conventions, while traveling or while being shipped?
  • Are grading submissions and cards temporarily held by a dealer or show organizer covered?
  • Are there security, safe-storage, alarm or temperature requirements?
  • How are new purchases added, and how often must values be updated?

Request answers by email or obtain the endorsement and specimen policy. A verbal assurance is difficult to interpret during a claim.

Coverage routes to compare

Route How it works Strengths Points to verify
Existing homeowners or renters policy Cards remain within the personal-property section and any collectible sublimit. Usually simplest to administer; one deductible and one insurer. Category limits, covered perils, valuation basis, off-premises and shipping exclusions.
Higher limit or scheduled endorsement/floater The insurer raises a limit or lists individual cards, sets or the collection on an endorsement. Can increase limits and, for a floater, broaden covered causes of loss. Whether accidental loss, mysterious disappearance, travel, shows and transit are included; appraisal and update requirements.
Specialist collectibles policy A policy designed for collections rather than ordinary household contents. May offer higher limits, collection-specific settlement terms and show or transit options. Eligibility, security conditions, deductibles, per-item limits, grading-submission wording and current contract language.
Provider-specific agreed-value or blanket/itemized option Some insurers offer agreed-value schedules, blanket limits or itemized schedules. Can make the settlement basis clearer when values are documented. Provider eligibility, documentation, adjustment clauses and whether any enhanced payment feature applies.

Collectibles Insurance Services’ 2021 brochure describes scheduling an individual item or set valued at $25,000 or more, transit while temporarily away from the scheduled location and show-related coverage subject to stated limits and conditions. Because that brochure is older, obtain and read the current policy before treating those features as available.

Chubb’s U.S. product description discusses agreed-value and blanket or itemized coverage and says its policy may pay up to 150% of an itemized amount when market value immediately before loss exceeds that amount. This is a provider-specific description, not a universal insurance rule; confirm eligibility, limits and conditions in the current contract.

Build a defensible inventory before buying coverage

An insurer needs to know what was owned and what it was worth. Create a dated inventory before requesting quotes and update it whenever you buy, sell, grade or revalue cards. Triple-I recommends documenting possessions and keeping the inventory and supporting records in a safe place outside the home.

Record these fields for every significant card

  • Set name, card number, character or subject and language.
  • Edition or print designation when applicable, such as first edition, unlimited or a special release.
  • Raw or graded status.
  • Grading company, numerical grade and certification number for a slabbed card.
  • Quantity and whether cards are stored together as a set.
  • Acquisition date, seller, price and receipt or transaction record.
  • Dated current-value support, such as comparable completed sales or an accepted appraisal.
  • Photographs of the front, back, corners, surface, holder and certification label.
  • Storage location and any movement to a show, dealer, grader or bank facility.

Keep the original receipts and the current valuation evidence. A purchase receipt proves what you paid; it does not automatically establish what the card would be worth at the time of a later claim.

Store copies separately

Keep an encrypted digital copy in secure cloud storage and another copy on a device or drive stored away from the collection. A paper copy in a separate secure location can help if online accounts are inaccessible after a fire or theft. Do not place the only inventory on the same shelf as the cards.

Establishing value: market evidence, appraisal and agreed value

Pokémon card prices can move quickly, and raw cards do not have the same market as graded cards. Build a repeatable, dated record using recent comparable completed sales where available. Note the card’s exact set, language, edition, condition and grade; do not combine raw and slabbed examples or treat a high-grade sale as evidence for a lower-grade card.

Ask the insurer which sales sources, appraisal format and update interval it accepts. There is no single Pokémon-specific valuation standard that every insurer must use. Some policies settle at actual cash value, some use replacement-cost concepts, and an agreed-value schedule may pay the amount agreed in advance if the contract conditions are met. Never assume a quoted value will be paid without reading the settlement clause.

When a formal appraisal helps

A formal appraisal can give an underwriter and a future claims adjuster a dated third-party record, but it is not automatically required and an insurer may use its own standards. PSA states that its written appraisal can be presented to an insurance company and currently accepts PSA-certified trading cards or tickets with declared values of $2,000 or more. PSA’s published trading-card appraisal prices are:

Declared value range Published PSA appraisal fee
$2,000–$4,999 $200
$5,000–$24,999 Not stated in the supplied PSA price tiers; confirm the current schedule.
$25,000–$49,999 Not stated in the supplied PSA price tiers; confirm the current schedule.
$50,000–$99,999 Not stated in the supplied PSA price tiers; confirm the current schedule.
$100,000 or more $1,000

The published figures are PSA service fees, not insurance premiums. PSA says appraisal fees become nonrefundable once the appraisal process begins, and prices and eligibility can change. Ask your insurer whether it accepts that appraisal and how often it wants a refresh.

Compare policy terms line by line

Use the following checklist when comparing a floater, endorsement and specialist policy. A lower premium can conceal a narrow definition of theft or a low per-item limit.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Limits and valuation

  • Total collection limit and any per-card or per-set maximum.
  • Blanket coverage versus an itemized schedule.
  • Actual cash value, replacement cost, agreed value or stated-value settlement.
  • Rules for appreciation, newly acquired cards and temporary value increases.

Causes of loss and exclusions

  • Theft, fire, water, accidental damage and breakage.
  • Loss and mysterious disappearance, which may be excluded or separately limited.
  • Damage caused by poor storage, humidity, pests, war, flood or earth movement.
  • Fraud, undisclosed ownership interests or unauthorized sale by a household member.

Location and movement

  • Coverage at home, in a bank safe-deposit facility, at a convention or while traveling.
  • Protection while cards are with a dealer, auction house, grading company or mail carrier.
  • Geographic limits and maximum days away from the scheduled address.

Claims and administration

  • Deductible and whether it applies per occurrence.
  • Required appraisals, receipts, photographs and police reports.
  • How quickly purchases must be reported.
  • Security requirements, safe specifications and alarm obligations.
  • Cancellation, nonrenewal and premium changes after a claim.

Ask the insurer to provide a specimen policy, all endorsements and a written explanation of any term that is not obvious from the declarations page.

Step-by-step: insure the collection

  1. Finish the inventory. Photograph the cards, record grades and certification numbers, gather receipts and create an off-site backup.
  2. Estimate values consistently. Use dated comparable sales and separate raw from graded cards. Mark which figures are estimates and which come from an appraisal.
  3. Read the existing policy. Locate personal-property, collectibles, off-premises, loss, deductible and valuation sections. Highlight sublimits and exclusions.
  4. Ask for an endorsement or floater quote. Submit the inventory and ask whether individual cards, sets or a blanket amount are preferable.
  5. Obtain at least one specialist quote. Provide the same inventory and storage details so the comparison is meaningful.
  6. Compare the contracts, not just prices. Check limits, perils, transit, show coverage, grading submissions, deductibles, settlement basis and update rules.
  7. Disclose the storage arrangement accurately. State where cards are kept, how they are secured and how often they leave the premises. Misstatements can jeopardize a claim.
  8. Bind coverage only after reviewing the schedule. Verify names, card descriptions, values, effective date, address and any newly acquired-card grace period.
  9. Calendar updates. Revalue material changes, add purchases promptly and request a revised schedule when a card’s value rises substantially.

Storage and security: what the policy may require

A storage box helps organize cards and keep them with the inventory workflow, but it is not insurance and its fire, water, theft or impact performance should not be assumed. The policy may require a locked safe, a monitored alarm, restricted access or a particular storage location. Follow the written requirement exactly and retain receipts or photographs showing compliance.

For expensive cards, consider separating the collection into access-controlled locations and limiting who knows the full value. Keep slabs and raw cards in protective holders appropriate to their condition, but do not represent a holder as a tested security device unless the manufacturer and insurer support that claim.

Shipping, grading and away-from-home gaps

Moving cards creates a separate insurance question. A homeowners policy may limit property away from the residence, and a carrier’s liability may exclude collectibles or require strict packaging and proof of value. Ask whether your policy covers outbound and return shipments, temporary custody by a grader, convention transport and loss while a package is delayed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

PSA submission coverage

PSA states that once it confirms receipt of an item, the item is covered for loss or damage up to the lesser of fair market value or the applicable maximum insured value. PSA also states that it does not insure inbound packages, although customers can elect shipping insurance from third-party providers. Therefore, do not infer that a grading fee, declared value or PSA custody protection covers the trip to PSA. Arrange separate outbound coverage and verify the return-shipment limit and exclusions.

A trading-card insurance provider advertises possible in-transit and grading-submission coverage, but advertising is not the policy. Obtain the actual wording and check packaging, carrier, geographic, per-item and proof-of-value conditions before shipping.

What to do after a loss

  1. Protect people first and prevent further damage. If water, fire or a security breach is involved, address the hazard without discarding evidence.
  2. Notify the insurer promptly. Ask for a claim number and the adjuster’s documentation requirements.
  3. Report theft to law enforcement. Obtain the report number and preserve surveillance footage or access logs.
  4. Secure the scene and cards. Keep damaged holders, packaging and debris unless the insurer authorizes disposal.
  5. Submit the inventory and evidence. Provide photographs, receipts, valuation records, appraisal certificates, grading certification numbers and shipping records.
  6. Explain the valuation method. Identify the comparable sales date, card condition and whether the evidence concerns a raw or graded example.
  7. Review the settlement calculation. Check the deductible, per-item limit, agreed amount and any depreciation or replacement requirement against the policy wording.

Do not inflate a value or omit a known condition issue. Inconsistent records can delay a claim and may raise fraud concerns.

Common mistakes that leave collections exposed

  • Relying on the household contents limit. A total limit does not override a collectible sublimit.
  • Assuming every loss is covered. Theft, accidental damage, mysterious disappearance and shipping may be treated differently.
  • Using an old purchase price as today’s value. Keep acquisition records and current market evidence separately.
  • Assuming grading is mandatory. Grading can make identification and valuation easier, but insurance requirements are policy-specific.
  • Assuming an appraisal guarantees payment. An insurer may accept, reject or adjust an appraisal under its settlement clause.
  • Forgetting new purchases. A temporary automatic-acquisition provision may have a low limit or short reporting period.
  • Sending cards to a grader without transit cover. Custody coverage may begin only after confirmed receipt.
  • Ignoring market movement. A scheduled amount can become inadequate after a major price increase.
  • Overstating a storage product’s protection. Organization accessories do not replace a policy or a compliant safe.

Choosing a practical setup for different collections

Moderate collection with values below the policy sublimit

Ask the existing insurer to confirm the collectible limit, covered perils and deductible. If the limit comfortably exceeds documented value and the exclusions fit your risk, maintain the inventory and update it periodically. Obtain written confirmation rather than assuming the limit applies.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Large collection with a few exceptionally valuable cards

Compare an itemized schedule or floater with a specialist policy. Itemizing the key cards can provide clearer identification, while a blanket limit may reduce administrative work for lower-value cards. Verify per-card caps and appreciation provisions.

Collection that travels to shows or graders

Prioritize away-from-home, show, dealer-custody and transit wording. Ask about packing standards, carrier requirements, maximum days away and grading-submission coverage. Arrange separate shipment insurance when the primary policy or grader does not cover inbound transit.

Collection approaching or exceeding $25,000 per item or set

Expect more detailed underwriting and documentation. The 2021 Collectibles Insurance Services brochure identifies $25,000 as a scheduling threshold for an individual item or set, but current eligibility and terms must be confirmed. Obtain a current schedule, appraisal requirements and security conditions before relying on any threshold.

Final decision checklist

  • The policy identifies Pokémon cards or collectibles and states the applicable limit.
  • The valuation and claim-settlement basis is understood.
  • Loss, theft, accidental damage and mysterious disappearance treatment is clear.
  • Transit, grading, shows and temporary off-site storage are addressed.
  • The deductible and per-card or per-set caps fit the collection.
  • The inventory, photographs, receipts and valuation records are backed up away from home.
  • New purchases and major market changes have a documented update process.
  • Storage and security conditions are being followed and can be demonstrated.

The safest approach is not to select a policy because it carries the word “collectibles.” Select the contract whose limits, settlement method, exclusions and movement provisions match how your Pokémon cards are actually owned, stored and transported, then keep the evidence current.
