For a new project or one using a current Yarn release, install and enable Corepack, then let the project select its Yarn version. Use Yarn’s Debian repository only when a project specifically requires Yarn Classic (1.x); the two methods install different Yarn generations.
Choose the Yarn version your project needs
Before installing anything, check the project’s setup instructions and its package.json for a packageManager declaration. Current Yarn’s installation guidance recommends Corepack, which can select a package-manager version for each project. Yarn Classic is the 1.x line and has separate Debian/Ubuntu repository instructions.

These routes are not interchangeable. Avoid changing an existing project’s package-manager version just to follow a general installation guide.

Yarn’s current installation guide uses Corepack. Some Node.js distributions include it; if yours does not, Yarn’s documentation says to install it with npm.

Install Corepack globally if it is not already available:
npm install -g corepack -
Enable Corepack’s shims:
corepack enable -
Check the Yarn command and version:
yarn --version

yarn init -2In an existing repository, follow that project’s instructions and run its usual install command only after confirming which Yarn version it expects. Corepack is intended to select the package-manager version associated with a project. Yarn describes Corepack as experimental, while also calling it the preferred way to install package managers for Yarn and pnpm.

Install Yarn Classic (1.x) from its Debian repository
Use this route only if the project specifically requires Yarn Classic. The official Classic guide provides the repository and signing-key setup, including a keyring at /etc/apt/keyrings/yarn-archive-keyring.gpg and a stable main repository entry. Complete that setup using the guide before installing the package:
sudo apt update
sudo apt install yarnThe guide also describes release-candidate and nightly channels; those are not needed for a typical stable installation. Its warning about Ubuntu 17.04 having cmdtest installed by default is specific to that release. If the yarn command behaves unexpectedly on that system, check for the conflict and follow the guide’s advice; do not assume it applies to every Ubuntu version.

Verify Yarn and troubleshoot common issues
Check the version in the project directory
Run yarn --version and compare the result with the version required by the repository. With Corepack, check from inside the project so its package-manager configuration can be applied.
If corepack is not found
Check how Node.js was installed. Some third-party Node.js distributions omit Corepack; Yarn’s guidance says it can be installed with npm install -g corepack, then enabled with corepack enable.
If the npm-installed Yarn version is not what you expect
Do not use npm install -g yarn as the general way to install current Yarn. Yarn’s FAQ says the npm yarn package has not distributed modern releases since 2019 and remains on the 1.x line. Use Corepack for current Yarn, or the Classic repository instructions when a project explicitly needs Yarn 1.
