How to Install Wowza Streaming Engine on Microsoft Azure

A practical guide to deploying Wowza Streaming Engine on Microsoft Azure, including the Marketplace image, Windows setup, Linux guidance, licensing, security and testing.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You can run Wowza Streaming Engine on an Azure virtual machine using a preconfigured Marketplace image, then connect to its Manager, configure access and test playback. Wowza publishes separate quick-starts for Windows and Linux. The steps below give a detailed Windows path; for Linux, follow Wowza’s current Azure guide rather than translating Windows commands or file paths.

Choose a deployment and licensing path

Before creating a VM, decide whether to use a preconfigured Wowza Marketplace image and how you will license it. Marketplace offers and billing terms can change, so confirm the current offer details in Azure and with Wowza before purchasing.

Preconfigured Marketplace image

Wowza’s cloud overview describes preconfigured images as a way to deploy without a manual command-line installation. The Windows and Linux Azure quick-starts, updated July 22, 2026, state that the latest preconfigured VM image runs Wowza Streaming Engine 4.11.3; verify the available image and version in the live Marketplace before deployment. See Wowza’s Windows Azure setup guide, Linux Azure setup guide, and Wowza’s cloud overview.

Embedded license or BYOL

  • Embedded license: Wowza describes this Marketplace option as combining VM runtime, storage, bandwidth and Wowza usage on a Microsoft invoice; its pricing page says no separate license key is required for this route.
  • Bring your own license (BYOL): Azure bills the infrastructure resources, while a Wowza subscription may be invoiced separately. This may suit you if you already have an eligible license, but confirm its terms and compatibility.

These are broad billing patterns, not a guarantee of the terms attached to every current offer. Check the offer’s billing details and the current Wowza pricing page before you commit. Wowza’s Windows guide says a temporary license key is preloaded for its documented path and directs BYOL users to replace it with their subscription or perpetual key.

Prepare the Azure VM

You need an Azure subscription and permission to create virtual machines and network rules, plus familiarity with the guest operating system you choose. For the documented Windows route, Wowza’s guide specifies Windows Server 2019 Datacenter. The Marketplace may offer a different operating-system version or image, so check before proceeding.

  1. Open Azure Marketplace and find the Wowza Streaming Engine offer. Review its image, licensing choice, region availability and billing details.
  2. Create or select a resource group, give the VM a name, and choose a region. Wowza recommends choosing a location with low latency to the camera or encoder supplying a live stream. If your server will receive feeds from several locations, weigh those sources and your viewers’ needs against your network design.
  3. Choose a VM size for the workload. Wowza’s Windows guide explicitly warns that A0 does not provide enough CPU resources. Its example D-series sizes are guide-specific, not a universal sizing recommendation: consider expected ingest, concurrent workloads and any transcoding, then check current Azure availability and sizing guidance.
  4. Review disk and network settings. Create only the inbound rules required by your ingest and playback protocols. The Windows guide discusses allowing UDP when an encoder sends a feed over UDP; do not open UDP or other ports indiscriminately. Restrict source addresses to known encoder or administrator IPs where practical, and apply the appropriate Azure network security group rules.
  5. Review the final configuration and deploy. Confirm the selected image, licensing option, region, size and networking before creating the VM.

Connect to Windows and secure Manager

Once Azure reports the VM as running, use Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) to connect to the Windows guest. Use the access details configured during VM creation and keep administrative credentials private.

  1. In the Windows VM, open C:Program Files (x86)Wowza Media SystemsWowza Streaming Engineconfadmin.password.
  2. Replace the initial Manager username and password with unique credentials. Do not leave default credentials on a publicly reachable management interface.
  3. Open Wowza Streaming Engine Manager at http://[public-ip-address]:8088/enginemanager, substituting the VM’s actual public IP address. The HTTP address is the guide’s connection example, not a recommended production security posture.
  4. For production, configure HTTPS and limit Manager access to trusted administrator addresses or a private management network. Avoid exposing the management port broadly to the internet.
  5. Check the license state in Manager. If you chose BYOL, install the eligible license key according to Wowza’s current instructions; for an embedded-license offer, confirm that the Marketplace license is active.

These Windows file and access details come from Wowza’s Windows Azure guide; do not assume the same paths or procedure apply to Linux.

Use the Linux quick-start for a Linux VM

Wowza also maintains a preconfigured Linux-on-Azure quick-start. It documents SSH access and, in its July 22, 2026 update, identifies the latest preconfigured image as Wowza Streaming Engine 4.11.3. The published information here does not establish exact Linux commands, file locations or Manager credential steps, so use the current Wowza Linux Azure guide for those details rather than adapting Windows instructions.

Test ingest and playback

A running VM and accessible Manager do not by themselves prove that your encoder can reach Wowza or that viewers can play the stream. Test with a sample feed or the test media and player tools available in Manager before relying on the setup.

  1. Confirm the VM’s public IP in Azure and ensure the relevant network rules permit the specific ingest and playback traffic your workflow uses.
  2. In Manager, open the applicable application’s Test Players and try playback using the VM’s public address.
  3. If a test player shows a private IP instead of the VM’s public IP, check the Windows guide’s Azure IP-lookup troubleshooting note and its recommended Wowza property setting. Do not assume a private address is the one viewers should use.
  4. If the test fails, isolate the stage: verify the encoder’s destination and protocol, Azure network rules, Wowza application status, license state and the public playback address.

For a live production workflow, also confirm that your chosen ingest and playback protocols, firewall rules and security controls match the encoder and player configuration. The Windows quick-start specifically notes UDP rules when the encoder sends over UDP; the correct ports depend on your setup.

Common setup problems

Symptom Likely cause What to check
VM deployment succeeds but Wowza is short on CPU resources The selected VM size is too small for the workload; Wowza specifically warns against A0 in its Windows guide. Review the VM size against expected ingest and processing needs, then resize if appropriate and available.
Encoder cannot connect Required protocol traffic is blocked or the encoder is pointed at the wrong address. Check the encoder destination, protocol and only the required Azure network security group rules; add UDP only if your encoder uses it.
Manager login fails or is exposed with initial credentials Initial credentials were not replaced, or the wrong credentials are being used. On the documented Windows path, inspect conf/admin.password through RDP and set unique credentials. Restrict administrative access.
Test player displays a private IP The Azure IP lookup noted in Wowza’s Windows guide may return a private address. Use the VM’s public IP for client access and consult the guide’s property-setting remedy.
License is missing or unexpected billing appears The selected offer’s license model may differ from your expectation, or a BYOL key may not be active. Review the Marketplace offer and current Wowza terms; verify license state in Manager.

Understand Azure costs when stopping the VM

Azure charges depend on the selected resources and current terms. Stopping a VM is not the same as deleting its deployment: storage and other attached resources may continue to incur charges, and public IP billing depends on the current Azure configuration and terms. Check the resource list and Azure billing details before stopping or deleting a test server. Delete resources you no longer need, taking care not to remove persistent media or configuration you intend to keep.

It runs from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home; it plays uploaded video rather than broadcasting a live camera feed.
