To run WordPress with a separate managed database, keep the PHP application and WordPress files on your web host, create a MySQL or MariaDB database and user in the managed service, allow the web host to reach the database endpoint, and place that endpoint in wp-config.php. The browser installer is still the normal WordPress installer; the difference is that the database is remote.

What a separate managed database means for WordPress
A conventional WordPress host often runs PHP, the web server, WordPress files, and MySQL or MariaDB on one machine. With a separate managed database, PHP and the files remain on the web host while the database engine runs as a service on another server or private network. The managed provider handles tasks such as provisioning the database engine, storage, automated backups, patching options, and some forms of high availability. You still own the WordPress configuration, database account, network policy, application updates, and recovery testing.
WordPress production support is for MySQL or MariaDB. A separate service works when the web host can resolve and reach the service hostname, the account has the required privileges, and the provider accepts the connection protocol and TLS settings. A database that exists but is blocked by a firewall is not a usable WordPress database.

The normal installation sequence does not change: create a database and account, configure wp-config.php, upload WordPress, and open the installation URL. Only the value used for the database host points outside the web server.
Requirements to check before provisioning

Plan the region and network before creating the instance. Putting the web host and database in the same region, and preferably on a private network, normally reduces latency and exposure. If the hosts are in different regions, every database query crosses a longer path; WordPress and plugins can issue many small queries, so latency can be more damaging than raw database CPU.

The WordPress Hosting Handbook identifies Amazon RDS for MySQL, Amazon RDS for MariaDB, Azure Database for MySQL, Google Cloud MySQL, DigitalOcean MySQL, IBM Cloud Databases for MySQL, and other MySQL-compatible services as services known to perform well. This is not a ranking, and WordPress does not regularly test every service on the list. Treat each service as a candidate to validate against your own network and plugin requirements.

Azure Database for MySQL is documented by Microsoft as a fully managed database as a service offering, and Microsoft provides a WordPress deployment example. Its Flexible Server networking model illustrates an important point: integrating the database into a virtual network still requires planned routing and access rules. Use that implementation as an example, not as a universal architecture.
Step 1: Create the database and a dedicated account
Provision the instance
In the managed-service console, select MySQL or MariaDB, choose a supported release, and place the instance in the region and network selected for the web host. Enable automated backups and point-in-time recovery when offered. Set a maintenance window that will not collide with your busiest publishing period, and record the instance hostname, port, engine version, and certificate requirements.

Do not use the provider’s administrative account in WordPress. Create one database dedicated to this site and one user dedicated to that database. A name such as site_wp and a user such as site_wp_app is clearer than a shared account used by several applications.
Grant only the privileges WordPress needs
During installation and normal updates, WordPress and trusted plugins may need to create or alter tables, add indexes, and write data. Grant those operations on the site’s database rather than granting global administration over every database on the server. The exact SQL and privilege names vary by MySQL or MariaDB version and by provider, so use the provider’s database-user screen or documented grant syntax and verify the result with a test connection.
If your organization uses a separate deployment account for schema migrations, keep that account out of wp-config.php. The runtime account should have no permission to manage unrelated databases, server users, replication, or provider configuration. Store the password in a secret manager when the host supports one, and establish a rotation procedure before launch.
Step 2: Allow the web host to reach the endpoint
A remote database connection must pass every layer between PHP and the managed instance. Configure the service firewall, private endpoint, virtual network, security group, or approved source address so that the web host can reach the database port. Restrict the rule to the web host’s private address or security identity instead of opening the port to the entire internet.
Private and public connection patterns
- Private networking: The web host and database share a virtual network or connected networks. DNS must resolve the private hostname, routes must exist in both directions, and security rules must allow the database port.
- Public endpoint with an allowlist: The provider exposes a public hostname, but its firewall allows only the web host’s fixed egress address. Confirm that the host’s outbound address is stable; autoscaling or a hosting move can change it.
- Proxy or tunnel: A database proxy can centralize TLS and connection pooling, but it adds another endpoint and failure mode. Document its address and health checks in the same way as the database itself.
Do not assume that a hostname resolving on your laptop will resolve on the web host. Test from the actual machine or container that runs PHP. Likewise, a successful TCP test does not prove that credentials, privileges, or TLS validation are correct; it only proves that a route and port are reachable.

Connectivity checks from the web host
- Resolve the service hostname with the host’s DNS tool, such as
getent hosts managed-db.example.com. A private address is expected when private networking is configured. - Check the port with a tool such as
nc -vz managed-db.example.com 3306, replacing the port with the one supplied by the provider. A timeout usually indicates routing or firewall trouble; an immediate refusal usually indicates a closed port or stopped service. - Use the MySQL client, if installed, to test authentication and TLS:
mysql --host=managed-db.example.com --port=3306 --user=site_wp_app --password --ssl-mode=REQUIRED. Enter the password when prompted rather than putting it in shell history. - After connecting, select the intended database and run a harmless query such as
SELECT 1;. Do not modify tables until the account and database name are confirmed.
Step 3: Prepare wp-config.php
Download the WordPress package, copy wp-config-sample.php to wp-config.php, and edit the database constants before uploading, or let the browser installer create the file. The essential values are:

define( 'DB_HOST', 'managed-db.example.com' );Replace every placeholder with the exact values from the managed service. DB_HOST is the service hostname, not the WordPress site’s domain and not an IP address copied from a temporary DNS lookup. If the provider uses a non-default port, append it to the host, for example:
define( 'DB_HOST', 'mysql.example.com:3307' );WordPress also documents host suffixes for a socket or pipe when a provider requires one. Use the syntax supplied by that provider; do not add a suffix speculatively. A hostname and port that work with the command-line client should be reproduced exactly in DB_HOST.
Protect the configuration file
- Set file permissions so the web-server account can read the file but ordinary users cannot download or edit it.
- Keep
wp-config.phpoutside a public document root when your host and WordPress layout support that arrangement. - Never commit the file or its password to a public repository, ticket, chat, or shell history.
- Use the provider’s TLS requirements. If the service requires a CA certificate, install the CA according to the host’s PHP/MySQL client documentation and verify the certificate hostname; disabling certificate validation only hides a configuration problem.
- Generate unique WordPress salts and keys during setup, and use HTTPS for the site itself.
Step 4: Upload WordPress without changing its layout
Place the WordPress files in the desired document root or subdirectory and preserve filenames, capitalization, and directory structure. The web server must route PHP requests to the PHP version selected in the requirements check. If the site is going into a subdirectory, decide the public URL before running the installer because WordPress stores site and home URLs in the database.

Ensure that the web-server user can write to wp-content if you expect dashboard-managed plugin, theme, or update installs. Avoid making the entire WordPress tree writable by the web server; broad write access increases the impact of a compromised plugin.

Step 5: Run the browser installer
- Open the site’s HTTPS URL, including the subdirectory if one was chosen. If
wp-config.phpis present and valid, WordPress should proceed to the setup form instead of asking for database details. - Enter the site title, administrator username, a unique strong password, and an administrator email address. Do not use a predictable username or reuse the database password.
- Submit the form and wait for WordPress to create its tables in the managed database. A successful completion proves that DNS, network access, authentication, basic privileges, and the selected database are all working together.
- Sign in, visit Settings and Permalinks, and save the intended permalink structure. Then create a test post, upload a small image, and verify that the front end and administration area both work over HTTPS.
If the installer reports that it cannot establish a database connection, stop changing WordPress files and follow the diagnostic order below. Repeatedly reinstalling WordPress will not fix a blocked port or an incorrect host name.

Use the first error that appears in the WordPress log or installer screen, then test one layer at a time. Keep the database password out of pasted logs.

WordPress’s installation guidance specifically recommends checking the database information, user permissions, and whether the server is available. Apply those checks in that order: a valid password cannot compensate for an unreachable endpoint, and a reachable endpoint cannot compensate for a user without privileges.

Test restores, not just backup switches
Enable the managed service’s automated backups and record the retention period. A backup policy is useful only if you can restore it. At a planned interval, restore to a separate instance or environment, point a copy of WordPress at it, and verify that posts, media metadata, plugin tables, and administrator access are intact. Record the time required and the steps needed to change the application endpoint during a recovery.
Coordinate database and WordPress upgrades
Keep PHP, WordPress core, themes, and plugins within their supported ranges before changing the database engine version. Take a fresh backup, test the upgrade on a clone, and schedule the maintenance window. Long-term-support labels such as MySQL 8.4 LTS and MariaDB 11.8 LTS describe the listed support horizon, not a guarantee that every plugin is compatible; application testing remains necessary.
Watch capacity and connection behavior
Monitor CPU, memory, storage growth, I/O latency, active connections, failed connections, and replica or failover events when the service exposes those metrics. WordPress traffic can create many short-lived connections when PHP workers are scaled out. A larger database plan will not solve an application that leaks connections or issues inefficient queries, so inspect slow-query and PHP logs before resizing.
Security practices for a split deployment
- Use private networking where practical, or an allowlist containing only the web host’s stable egress address.
- Require TLS for database traffic when the provider supports or mandates it, and validate the provider certificate.
- Use a dedicated WordPress database and runtime account; never share administrative credentials with the application.
- Rotate the database password through a controlled maintenance procedure and update the secret and
wp-config.phptogether. - Keep HTTPS enabled, apply WordPress and plugin security updates, and remove inactive plugins and themes.
- Log connection failures and administrative changes without recording passwords or full connection strings.
- Limit database management access to a small operations group and use multi-factor authentication on the provider console.
Cost and operational trade-offs
A managed database replaces some server-maintenance work with a recurring service bill. The official WordPress guidance does not establish current prices, and costs vary by region, engine, storage, backup retention, high-availability mode, and network transfer. Request a current estimate from each provider rather than comparing an instance headline price alone.
The separate design is most useful when you need independent database backups, a recovery process, scaling that does not require moving the web files, or a database team that already operates the provider. A single-host installation can be simpler and cheaper for a small site with modest availability requirements. Choose the split design only when the benefits justify managing DNS, routing, credentials, TLS, and two separate failure domains.
Launch checklist
- PHP is 8.3 or newer and the database is MySQL 8.0 or newer or MariaDB 10.11 or newer.
- The database and web host are in an appropriate region and network.
- A dedicated database and user exist, with only the privileges WordPress requires.
- The provider firewall, private endpoint, route, and security group allow the web host to reach the database port.
- DNS resolution and a TCP connection succeed from the actual PHP host.
