Run sudo apt update, then sudo apt install wkhtmltopdf. Confirm it is available with command -v wkhtmltoimage and check its version with wkhtmltoimage --version.
Install the Ubuntu 24.04 package
- Refresh APT’s package metadata:
sudo apt update - Install the package that contains the image utility:
sudo apt install wkhtmltopdf - Check that the executable is on your PATH and print its version:
command -v wkhtmltoimagewkhtmltoimage --version
The package name and command name differ: Ubuntu’s Noble wkhtmltopdf package provides wkhtmltoimage. Ubuntu lists version 0.12.6-2build2 for amd64 in its Noble package listing, and the Noble manpage identifies the utility as supplied by that package. The package is in Ubuntu’s Universe repository. These commands follow the package information; they have not been independently run here.

Ubuntu’s package or an upstream build?
For Ubuntu 24.04, the Ubuntu repository package is the direct Noble package. The upstream download page lists stable series 0.12.6, released June 11, 2020, and lists Ubuntu 22.04 (Jammy) among its Ubuntu download targets—not Ubuntu 24.04 (Noble). A Jammy download is therefore a separate compatibility choice, not an upstream build listed for Noble.
Build variants can matter: the project explains that some features require its patched Qt, and distribution packages built without those patches may behave differently. If your application depends on one of those features, verify that the package variant you choose supports the specific behavior you need rather than assuming the Ubuntu package matches an upstream example. Troubleshoot installation and rendering
- APT cannot find the package: Run
sudo apt updateand confirm that the Universe repository is enabled. Ubuntu places the Noble package there. wkhtmltoimageis not found: Check the result ofcommand -v wkhtmltoimageand review whetherapt installcompleted successfully. The Noble manpage documents the executable’s package relationship.- The rendered result differs from an upstream example: Check whether the expected behavior relies on patched Qt. Upstream warns that distribution builds and its patched build can behave differently.
- You are considering an upstream Ubuntu binary: The upstream download list names Jammy, not Noble, as an Ubuntu target. Do not treat a Jammy package as the officially listed Noble build; check compatibility and required rendering behavior before choosing it.
Handle untrusted HTML safely
The wkhtmltopdf project warns: “Do not use wkhtmltopdf with any untrusted HTML – be sure to sanitize any user-supplied HTML/JS, otherwise it can lead to complete takeover of the server it is running on!” Treat HTML and JavaScript from users as untrusted input and sanitize it before rendering. Read the project’s security and status notes before exposing a renderer to user-supplied content.
