- If you intend to use Homebrew for other software, follow its official installation instructions and confirm that
brew --versionworks. Homebrew documents/opt/homebrewas the default prefix on Apple Silicon and/usr/localon Intel Macs. Its current guidance describes Apple Silicon as the supported CPU configuration and Intel as Tier 3; these are Homebrew support details, not a compatibility statement about wkhtmltoimage. - Check Homebrew’s current system requirements before building formulae from source. Its installation documentation says Xcode or the Xcode Command Line Tools are required for source builds and lists macOS Sequoia 15 or newer on officially supported Apple Silicon hardware. These requirements do not show that the older wkhtmltoimage installer supports those systems.
Use the project-listed macOS installer
The wkhtmltopdf project’s downloads page lists a 64-bit macOS installer for the 0.12.6 stable series. The page dates that stable release to June 11, 2020. Treat this as the project’s listed installer, not a guarantee that it works on your macOS release or processor. Find and verify the executable
If command -v wkhtmltoimage prints nothing, the executable is either not installed, was installed somewhere outside the shell’s PATH, or uses a different installation location. Check the installer’s documentation for its destination rather than guessing a path. If you locate the executable, you can run it by full path to distinguish a PATH issue from a missing or non-runnable binary:
/full/path/to/wkhtmltoimage --versionReplace the example path with the actual location. If the version command runs by full path, add its containing directory to your shell’s PATH using the method appropriate to your shell, then open a new Terminal session and repeat the checks.
