The key is to match the Windows release and processor architecture, then follow any required package order.
Choose the right offline update method

Install a cumulative update on an offline PC
1. Identify the target PC’s Windows release and architecture
On the target PC, run winver to see its Windows version. Check system information or your organization’s inventory for the processor architecture, such as x64 or Arm64. A package intended for a different Windows release or architecture is not interchangeable.
2. Download the matching KB package
On an internet-connected computer, search for the required KB in the Microsoft Update Catalog. Select the package that matches the target’s Windows release and architecture. Read the KB’s package list and installation notes before downloading: some cumulative updates require checkpoint packages to be installed first.
Microsoft’s instructions for KB5124010 Preview describe x64 and Arm64 packages and checkpoint sequencing. Its KB5124008 security update page also gives update-specific package and installation guidance. These are examples, not universal package names or prerequisites; check the page for the KB you actually need.

3. Transfer the packages to the offline PC
Copy the downloaded .msu file or files to the target PC. Removable storage is one possible transfer method. Keep together any checkpoint and target packages required by the KB.
4. Install packages in the KB’s required order
Use the sequence specified on the update’s support page. If it calls for a checkpoint update before the target update, install the checkpoint first. Microsoft’s instructions may also let you put all required .msu files in one folder and run DISM against the target package so it can locate checkpoint prerequisites there. Do not assume this behavior or order applies to every update.

5. Run the documented installer command
Open Command Prompt as an administrator and substitute the exact filename and path for the package you downloaded:
DISM /Online /Add-Package /PackagePath:C:Packages<exact-update-file>.msu

Some update-specific instructions also name Windows Update Standalone Installer. Use the method described by the relevant KB rather than assuming every package should be installed the same way. Restart if prompted, then check Windows to confirm the resulting update or build.

If you are patching a mounted image for later deployment, use DISM’s image target rather than /Online. Microsoft documents this command form:

DISM /Image:<mount-directory> /Add-Package /PackagePath:<update-file>.msu
Use a package compatible with the image’s Windows release and architecture, and follow the KB’s prerequisite order. For broader updates to Windows installation media, Microsoft points to its Dynamic Update guidance.
When Windows Update Assistant is—and is not—the answer
The Windows Update Assistant is a manually initiated tool for feature updates on compatible systems. Microsoft directs users to Windows Update in Settings for quality updates and says the Assistant does not run on Arm-based PCs. Because the Assistant downloads and installs the feature update itself, it is not the method for carrying a standalone quality-update package to a disconnected PC.
For an offline feature upgrade, use Microsoft’s current Windows 11 download or installation-media guidance for the specific deployment you are preparing; the Assistant’s instructions do not establish an offline package-transfer workflow.
For managed PCs, check the organization’s deployment route
Before manually installing packages across an organization, check whether updates are managed through WSUS or another approved system. Microsoft’s September 8, 2026 page for KB5124008 says that update syncs automatically with WSUS when the product is Windows 11 and the classification is Security Updates. That note applies to that update and configuration; consult the specific KB and your administrator’s deployment policy for other cases.
