Start the Windows installation you already use, open Windows 11 installation media, run setup.exe, and verify that Keep personal files and apps is selected on the Ready to install screen. That procedure can retain your files, but it does not make unsupported hardware supported. Microsoft warns that compatibility problems may occur, support is unavailable, and updates—including security updates—are not guaranteed on a PC below the Windows 11 requirements.
Back up your files first and treat the keep-files selection as a setup option, not as a promise. If you boot the computer from the installation USB instead, Windows performs a fresh installation and the existing installation, apps, and files are wiped.

What “unsupported” means in this upgrade
A Windows 11 installation is unsupported when the computer does not meet one or more of Microsoft’s minimum hardware or firmware requirements. The exact failure matters: the title alone does not identify whether the problem is the processor, TPM, Secure Boot configuration, storage, memory, graphics capability, or another condition.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Microsoft’s documented installation path still explains how to request file retention: launch Setup from inside the current Windows installation and choose the keep-files option. Microsoft does not document a reliable bypass that makes an ineligible computer supported, and it does not promise that the keep-files choice will work on unsupported hardware.

Microsoft’s unsupported-device disclaimer says: “Installing Windows 11 on this PC is not recommended and may result in compatibility issues. If you proceed with installing Windows 11, your PC will no longer be supported and won’t be entitled to receive updates.” It also says: “Damages to your PC due to lack of compatibility aren’t covered under the manufacturer warranty.”
Those warnings are material to the decision. You may be able to complete the upgrade and preserve data, but you accept the possibility of malfunction, loss of support, missing updates, and compatibility-related damage that falls outside the manufacturer warranty.
Check the PC before changing Windows
Use Microsoft PC Health Check or Windows Update to determine whether the machine meets the published baseline. These checks are preferable to guessing which requirement is missing.

Microsoft’s published baseline
| Component | Minimum requirement |
|---|---|
| Processor | Approved 1 GHz or faster processor with at least two cores |
| Memory | 4 GB RAM |
| Storage | 64 GB |
| Firmware | UEFI firmware with Secure Boot capability |
| Security module | TPM 2.0 |
| Graphics | DirectX 12-compatible graphics with a WDDM 2.0 driver |
| Display | 720p display larger than 9 inches |
These are baseline requirements, not a guarantee that every feature will work. Microsoft notes that individual features can have additional requirements. A PC can therefore pass a general check while still lacking hardware or firmware needed for a particular feature.
How to interpret the result
- If the checks pass: use the normal in-place upgrade procedure and still create a backup.
- If the checks fail: record the reason before proceeding. A failed result does not identify a safe bypass, and installing anyway leaves the computer outside Microsoft’s supported configuration.
- If the result is unclear: do not start Setup until you know which condition is being reported. The installation method cannot correct a missing TPM, an incompatible processor, or another hardware limitation.
Why each check matters
The processor requirement is not just a speed test: Microsoft specifies an approved processor running at 1 GHz or faster with at least two cores. Extra RAM or free disk space cannot compensate for a processor that is outside the approved list. Likewise, having a TPM chip is not enough if it is an older version; the baseline calls for TPM 2.0.
UEFI firmware must be capable of Secure Boot. “Capability” does not necessarily mean Secure Boot is currently enabled, but changing firmware settings can affect an existing installation, so do not alter them casually before making a backup. Graphics support includes both DirectX 12 compatibility and a WDDM 2.0 driver. Finally, the display baseline is a 720p screen larger than 9 inches, while some Windows features impose additional conditions.
Before you begin: a safer preparation checklist
An in-place upgrade changes the operating system even when it retains user data. Prepare the computer as if the installation might fail, rather than relying on the favorable outcome shown in Setup.

- Identify the failing requirement. Save a screenshot or note from PC Health Check or Windows Update. This gives you a record of why the device is unsupported and prevents confusion if Setup later displays a different warning.
- Sign in with access to your existing files. Confirm you can open the Windows desktop normally and that your important folders are visible before launching Setup.
- Finish pending work. Close applications and save documents. An upgrade requires restarts, so do not begin while a critical task is open or while the computer is needed for another time-sensitive job.
- Confirm the installation source. Make sure the Windows 11 media opens in File Explorer and contains
setup.exe. The media is for running Setup from Windows; it is not an instruction to boot from the USB. - Keep power stable. On a laptop, connect the charger. An interruption during operating-system replacement can leave the installation unusable even when personal data was backed up.
- Plan for the unsupported outcome. Decide in advance whether you will keep testing Windows 11, use the 10-day rollback, or restore your own backup. Do not assume a completed first boot means every future update will install.
Back up files before you run Setup
Microsoft recommends a backup even though an in-place upgrade normally transfers personal files. Use OneDrive or an external backup device, and make sure the backup is readable before changing the operating system.
A practical backup check
- Copy the folders and files you cannot replace to OneDrive or an external drive.
- Wait for cloud synchronization to finish, or safely eject the external drive after copying completes.
- Open several copied files from the backup location. Check different file types, such as documents, photos, and any project files that matter to you.
- Keep the backup disconnected or otherwise protected while Setup runs, so a mistake during installation cannot remove both the working copy and the backup.
Include files stored outside the usual Documents, Pictures, and Desktop folders. Check application-specific project directories and any locally stored files that do not synchronize automatically. A cloud account is not a backup until synchronization has completed and you have confirmed that files can be opened from the cloud location. An external drive is not a backup until the copy has finished and you have tested representative files.
An external drive can also be used to hold Windows installation media, but its role must be kept separate in your plan: the backup protects your data, while the installation media supplies Setup. Do not assume that the USB containing installation media also contains a second copy of your personal files.
Use the in-place upgrade path
The following procedure is the route that presents Microsoft’s file-retention choices.
- Start the current Windows installation normally and sign in. Do not begin by changing the boot order or selecting the USB drive as the startup device.
- Attach or open the Windows 11 installation media. This may be media on a USB flash drive or another installation source.
- In the running Windows desktop, open the installation media and double-click
setup.exe. - Proceed through Windows Setup until the Ready to install screen appears.
- Read the retention setting shown on that screen. Confirm that it says Keep personal files and apps.
- Only after checking that wording should you select the command to begin installation. The computer will restart during the process; do not interrupt it unless Setup reports a specific failure.
If the screen does not offer Keep personal files and apps, stop rather than assuming your files will be preserved. Recheck that you launched setup.exe from the existing Windows desktop and that you are not using the boot-from-media route. Microsoft does not guarantee that the option will be available on an unsupported computer.
Understand the three retention choices
Windows Setup presents choices with very different results. Read the wording on your own screen before continuing.
| Setup choice | What it retains | What it removes |
|---|---|---|
| Keep personal files and apps | Personal files, installed apps, and settings | None of those categories are intentionally removed by the in-place choice |
| Keep personal files only | Personal files | Apps and settings |
| Nothing | Nothing from the existing installation | Files, apps, and settings |
For the goal in this guide, only the first option matches the requirement to retain files and applications. Selecting Keep personal files only is not equivalent: your documents may remain, but installed programs and settings are removed. Selecting Nothing is a wipe.

- The available storage capacity may vary.
Take a photograph or screenshot of the Ready to install page if you need a record of the selected option. This is not a substitute for a backup, but it can help you verify that you did not accidentally select a different retention mode. If the option is greyed out, absent, or replaced by a warning, cancel and investigate instead of treating the nearest available choice as safe.
Do not boot from the USB for this job
Booting directly from Windows 11 installation media starts a fresh-install workflow. Microsoft describes that route as wiping the existing installation and losing the files and apps on it. It is useful when you deliberately want a clean installation, but it is the wrong path when retention is the priority.
The distinction is simple:
- Run
setup.exeinside Windows: reaches the in-place upgrade flow and can display Keep personal files and apps. - Boot from the installation media: installs a fresh copy and removes the existing Windows installation, files, and apps.
Creating a bootable USB does not itself erase the computer. The destructive step is choosing that USB as the startup device and proceeding with a fresh installation. If you have already booted from it and see a clean-install workflow, cancel before selecting a disk or deletion option.
What you give up on unsupported hardware
Choosing to continue below the minimum requirements is a risk decision, not an installation trick. Microsoft’s position is that Windows 11 is not recommended on such a device.
- The computer may have compatibility problems or malfunctioning hardware features.
- Microsoft support is not provided for the unsupported configuration.
- Windows updates, including security updates, are not guaranteed.
- Compatibility-related damage may be excluded from the manufacturer warranty.
A successful first boot does not change those terms. It only shows that the installation completed; it does not establish that future updates, drivers, applications, sleep behavior, networking, graphics, or other functions will remain reliable.
There is no official promise that a particular bypass, script, registry change, or installation-media modification will preserve files or restore eligibility. Even if an unofficial method allows Setup to continue, it does not remove Microsoft’s unsupported-device warning. Treat every such method as an additional risk, not as a supported solution.
Supported and unsupported paths compared
| Decision point | Supported upgrade | Unsupported upgrade |
|---|---|---|
| How Setup is started | Run setup.exe from the current Windows installation |
The same in-place path is the only documented route that can show the keep-files choice; Microsoft does not promise it will work |
| Minimum requirements | Computer meets Microsoft’s listed baseline | One or more baseline requirements are not met |
| Keep-files option | Setup’s documented Keep personal files and apps choice | Not guaranteed by Microsoft |
| Installation type | In-place upgrade | In-place upgrade may complete, but booting media remains a wipe-and-install |
| Support and updates | Not subject to Microsoft’s unsupported-device warning | Support and updates, including security updates, are not guaranteed |
| Data protection | Backup is still recommended | Verified backup is especially important because retention is not guaranteed |
| Rollback | Windows may provide the standard rollback window | Rollback files and the unsupported status still limit the protection you have |
The comparison is about more than whether Setup finishes. A supported computer has Microsoft’s normal eligibility position, while an unsupported one carries an explicit disclaimer. Both should be backed up, but the unsupported case gives you less certainty about updates, support, and whether the keep-files option will appear.

What to do if Setup does not offer file retention
Do not select a different option just to get past the screen. Use this stop-and-check sequence:
- Confirm that you are running the existing Windows installation, rather than booting the computer from the USB.
- Close Setup and verify that your backup opens and contains the files you need.
- Run PC Health Check or Windows Update again and note the reported eligibility problem.
- Do not choose Keep personal files only if you need applications and settings, and do not choose Nothing if you need the existing files.
- Proceed only if you accept that Microsoft has not guaranteed the keep-files option for this unsupported device.
If Setup reports an error, preserve the backup and the current installation rather than repeatedly retrying with different retention choices. A fresh-install path cannot be used as a substitute for a verified backup.

- Confusing a bootable USB with an upgrade. The same USB can provide either an in-place Setup source or a fresh-install boot path; how you start it determines the result.
- Skipping the Ready to install review. Do not rely on the option selected on an earlier page. Confirm the final retention wording immediately before installation.
- Assuming extra disk space fixes eligibility. Storage is only one baseline item. It cannot fix an unsupported processor, absent TPM 2.0, or missing Secure Boot capability.
- Disconnecting the only backup too late. Test the backup first, then keep it separate while Setup runs.
- Treating rollback as a backup. Rollback files are temporary and disappear after the 10-day period; they are not an independent copy of your personal data.
Rollback: the 10-day limit
After an upgrade, Microsoft’s Go back option is available for 10 days. When that period expires, the files needed for the rollback are removed, so the built-in return path is no longer available.
Rollback is not a permanent safety net. Before upgrading, decide what you will do if the unsupported installation is unstable, and keep your personal backup independent of the Windows rollback files. If a problem appears, use the 10-day period to evaluate it rather than waiting until the rollback files have been removed.
There is also an important date consideration: Microsoft says Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. Returning to Windows 10 after that date means losing Microsoft’s free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, and security fixes. A rollback may restore the previous operating system, but it does not restore the support status Windows 10 had before its end-of-support date.
After the upgrade
When Windows 11 finishes installing, sign in and check the items that matter before deleting the backup or old installation files.
Recommended Free Tools
- Open several personal files from their normal locations.
- Confirm that essential applications are still installed if you selected Keep personal files and apps.
- Check that the computer’s functions you rely on are working before treating the upgrade as complete.
- Keep the verified backup until you are satisfied that the installation is usable and you no longer need the rollback window.
Test more than a single document. Open a photo, a spreadsheet, and a file associated with an important application. Launch the programs you use most, verify network access, and check audio, display, sleep, and other functions relevant to your work. These checks cannot turn unsupported hardware into a supported configuration. They simply give you an opportunity to detect a problem while your backup and, for up to 10 days, the built-in Go back option may still be available.

The decision in one sentence
If retaining files is essential, run setup.exe from inside the current Windows installation and verify Keep personal files and apps; never boot from the installation media for that purpose. On unsupported hardware, continue only with a tested backup and a clear understanding that Microsoft does not guarantee compatibility, support, or updates.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I upgrade to Windows 11 without losing my files?
Microsoft’s in-place upgrade flow can retain personal files and installed apps when Setup is started from the current Windows installation and the Ready to install page shows Keep personal files and apps. On unsupported hardware, Microsoft does not guarantee that the option will appear or work, so make and test a backup first.
What happens if I boot from the Windows 11 USB?
Booting directly from installation media starts a fresh-install workflow. Microsoft says that route wipes the existing installation and loses its files and apps. For retention, start Windows normally and run setup.exe from the media instead.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Is Keep personal files only the same as keeping files and apps?
No. Keep personal files only preserves personal files but removes installed applications and settings. Keep personal files and apps is the choice that aims to retain all three categories.
Does the keep-files option make my unsupported PC supported?
No. It is only a Windows Setup retention choice. Microsoft says installation below the minimum requirements is not recommended, support is unavailable, updates are not guaranteed, and compatibility-related damage may fall outside the manufacturer warranty.
How do I find out why my PC is unsupported?
Run Microsoft PC Health Check or use Windows Update’s eligibility assessment. Record whether the issue concerns the processor, TPM 2.0, Secure Boot-capable UEFI firmware, memory, storage, graphics, display, or another requirement before deciding what to do.
Can I roll back if Windows 11 causes problems?
Microsoft’s Go back option is available for 10 days after an upgrade; the files needed for it are then removed. Keep an independent backup. Also note that Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025, so returning to Windows 10 does not restore free updates, technical assistance, or security fixes.
Do I need an external drive?
Microsoft names OneDrive and an external backup device as backup options. An external drive can also carry installation media, but it should not be treated as your only backup unless you have completed the copy and opened representative files from it.
Will Windows updates continue on unsupported hardware?
Microsoft does not guarantee updates, including security updates, for a Windows 11 installation on a device below the minimum requirements. A successful installation or first boot is not a promise of future update delivery.
The Bottom Line
Back up and verify your data, start Windows normally, run setup.exe, and select Keep personal files and apps on the final review screen. Do not boot from the USB when you need to retain the existing installation. On unsupported hardware, this can fail and carries no Microsoft guarantee for compatibility, support, or updates; the built-in rollback window is only 10 days.
