Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

Plan your exit before upgrading: Microsoft’s Go back option is usually available for 10 days after an upgrade, provided the previous installation files remain. The exact 25H2 Beta build and channel-switch status can change; confirm them in Microsoft’s latest flight announcement and Flight Hub before proceeding.
Before installing: check your device and the current flight
Record your Windows edition, version, and build in Settings > System > About or by running winver. If this is an organization-managed PC, check with its IT team first; organizations may have their own testing and deployment policies.

Then read the current Windows Insider announcement and Flight Hub entry for the build you are considering. Channel offers and build relationships change, and a device is not guaranteed to be offered a particular 25H2 Beta build or a channel switch. Microsoft’s January 9, 2026 announcement described Dev and Beta receiving the same 25H2-based build at that time, while warning that the Dev-to-Beta switch window would close when Dev advanced. That is a dated example, not a statement about the current channel state. See Microsoft’s January 2026 announcement and check the current flight before choosing.

Preview builds are not a promise of finished features. Microsoft says features may roll out gradually, change, be removed, or never ship. Read the current build’s known issues before installing and consider whether the device can tolerate app or driver problems.

Make a backup and recovery plan first
Copy important files to a separate location and verify that you can open them. Windows Backup can back up apps and settings where appropriate for your account and device, but it should not replace a separate copy of important files. If BitLocker is enabled, save the recovery key somewhere you can access without the PC; some Windows Recovery Environment options may ask for it. Microsoft’s Windows recovery options guidance recommends backing up before recovery work.
For an additional fallback, create a recovery drive while Windows is working and keep suitable Windows recovery or installation media available. A recovery drive is recovery media, not a backup of your personal files. Reinstalling from installation media can remove everything on the device, so do not rely on it as your only copy of important data.
- Keep a separate, verified copy of important files.
- Save the BitLocker recovery key outside the PC.
- Know how you will reach recovery media if Windows will not start.
- Note your current build, update date, device model, and any critical app or driver dependencies.
Enroll and install through Windows Settings
Microsoft’s general Windows 11 enrollment route is through Settings. The exact channels and builds offered depend on the current Insider program state and your device.
- Open Settings > Windows Update > Windows Insider Program, then select Get Started.
- Link the Microsoft account used for Windows Insider registration.
- Choose the channel that currently offers the build you intend to test. Review the channel information and agreements before accepting; do not assume Beta is available for every device or that a channel change will remain possible.
- Restart when prompted, either immediately or later.
- After restart, open Settings > Windows Update and check for the preview build offered to your device. Review the displayed version and build before installing.
Microsoft’s Windows Insider enrollment guide describes this path. For historical context, Microsoft announced Windows 11 25H2 Build 26200.5074 in Release Preview on August 29, 2025; eligible Release Preview Insiders could select the optional update in Windows Update. Its later April 17, 2026 Release Preview post also identified 25H2 as build 26200. These dated Release Preview details do not establish the current Beta build. See the August 2025 announcement and April 2026 announcement for their respective historical offers.
Check the build after installation
Once the update finishes, confirm the installed build and review Windows Update plus the current flight announcement for known issues. Feature availability may vary because some changes roll out gradually. If you encounter a problem, record the symptom, affected app or device, and when it began; this helps distinguish an issue that followed the build from an unrelated fault.

How to go back to the previous Windows version
If a problem follows the upgrade and the option is still available, open Settings > System > Recovery and select Go back. Microsoft says this is usually available for 10 days after upgrading, not guaranteed for every installation. The Windows.old and $Windows.~BT folders must still be present; deleting the previous installation files removes this route.
Go back keeps personal files, but removes apps and drivers installed after the upgrade and reverses settings changes made since then. Follow the prompts and keep the PC powered during the return. Microsoft’s Go back guidance explains the conditions. Going back also does not unenroll the PC from Insider: Microsoft states, “Going back to an earlier build won’t remove you from the Insider Program.”
If Go back is unavailable or Windows will not start
Choose a recovery path that matches the problem rather than expecting one option to reverse every preview change. Microsoft’s recovery options guide covers available routes, which can differ by device and situation.
- A recent update caused the issue: consider uninstalling the recent update through the available recovery controls.
- Windows will not start: use Windows Recovery Environment options where available. Have the BitLocker recovery key ready if encryption is enabled.
- Other recovery options fail: reinstall using suitable recovery or installation media. This can erase the device, so confirm the backup first.
These options solve different problems: Go back returns to a previous version while its files and time window remain; update removal targets an update; recovery media can reinstall Windows. Verify the controls available on your device before choosing.
Ways to leave the Insider path
Returning to an earlier build is not the same as leaving Windows Insider. Microsoft’s enrollment and exit guidance describes opting out with a production build when the PC is on a production build, or restoring the device to its original operating system using an appropriate recovery image after backing up. Check Microsoft’s Insider settings guidance for the supported exit choices for your current state.
