Install Visual Studio with Microsoft’s Visual Studio Installer, then follow the activation route for your edition and license: Community does not need a paid key, while paid editions may be unlocked by an assigned subscription or, in some cases, a product key. Installing the IDE and activating a subscription are separate steps. For Visual Studio 2026 subscriber access, Microsoft says to sign in with the account assigned to the subscription; the IDE itself does not require a product key.
Before you start: identify your edition and license
The right activation method depends on the Visual Studio edition, version, and how you obtained the license. Community, paid-edition trials, assigned subscriptions, and retail subscriptions do not all use the same process.

- Community: use the free edition; a paid subscription or product key is not required.
- Professional or Enterprise trial: Microsoft’s cited trial instructions apply to Visual Studio 2022 and describe a time-limited evaluation.
- Assigned subscription: sign in to the IDE with the account your organization or subscription administrator assigned. Microsoft’s Visual Studio 2026 guidance says the IDE does not need a product key.
- Retail subscription: activate the subscription separately using the purchase confirmation and its 5×5 key.
If your organization provides Visual Studio, use its approved download route and confirm with the administrator which edition and subscription have been assigned.
Install Visual Studio
- Choose the official download. Start with Microsoft’s Visual Studio installation instructions or a version-specific Microsoft source. The Visual Studio Installer’s Available tab lists products it can install. To get a specific version, use Microsoft’s release history.
- Run the bootstrapper as an administrator. The downloaded file may be named VisualStudioSetup.exe or use an edition-specific name. Follow the prompts, including Microsoft’s license and privacy notices.
- Select the workloads you need. Workloads determine which project templates and development tools are installed. Select only those relevant to your work; individual components and language packs can also be selected if needed.
- Review optional locations and settings. You can choose the IDE and download-cache locations during the first installation. Microsoft says changing those locations later requires uninstalling and reinstalling Visual Studio.
- Install and open the IDE. When setup completes, launch Visual Studio and use the activation path below that matches your license.
Activate or unlock the edition you installed
Visual Studio Community
Community does not require a paid subscription or product key. Microsoft notes that users may still receive periodic sign-in prompts; signing in can help you continue without interruption. See Microsoft’s Visual Studio sign-in guidance.

Professional or Enterprise trial in Visual Studio 2022
Microsoft’s Visual Studio 2022 license guidance documents a 30-day evaluation for Professional or Enterprise, extendable once to 90 days by signing in. These are version-specific terms from the cited Visual Studio 2022 guidance, not a guarantee for every Visual Studio release. After the evaluation, continued use requires an online subscription or a product key. Check the applicable terms for your edition and version in Microsoft’s Visual Studio licensing guidance.
Subscription assigned to your account
For Visual Studio 2026 subscriber access, sign in to the IDE using the Microsoft account or work/school account to which the subscription was assigned. Microsoft says sign-in checks for an active subscription and unlocks the edition included with that entitlement; the Visual Studio 2026 IDE does not require a product key. Follow Microsoft’s subscriber access guidance and its Visual Studio IDE access instructions.

Retail Visual Studio subscription
A retail subscription uses a separate activation flow. Open the activation link on the Microsoft Store purchase confirmation page or in the confirmation email, sign in with the account that should receive subscription access, and enter the subscription’s 5×5 key. This activates the subscription benefit; it is not the same as entering a product key into the Visual Studio IDE. Microsoft provides the steps in its retail subscription activation instructions.
When a product key is—and is not—needed
Do not assume that a Visual Studio subscription means you must enter a key into the IDE. For Visual Studio 2026 subscriber access, Microsoft describes account sign-in as the way to verify entitlement, with no IDE product key required. A retail subscription’s 5×5 key is used in its subscription activation flow instead.

Keys available through the Visual Studio Subscriptions portal may be for other eligible Microsoft software or earlier Visual Studio versions. If you are activating Windows, Office, or another eligible product, retrieve the relevant key from the Visual Studio Subscriptions portal guidance; do not treat those keys as proof that a current Visual Studio 2026 subscriber needs an IDE key.
Quick Recap
Troubleshoot a paid edition that remains locked
- Check the signed-in account. Confirm that the IDE is signed in with the exact account to which the subscription was assigned.
- Verify the subscription and edition. Check what is shown in the subscriber portal. The subscription level controls entitlement: a Professional subscription does not grant Enterprise access.
- Ask the administrator to check assignment. For an organization-provided subscription, have the administrator confirm both your assignment and your download access.
- For a retail purchase, complete the retail flow. Check the purchase confirmation for the 5×5 key and use its activation link. Microsoft directs subscription activation or renewal issues to subscription support; contact Microsoft Store support if the confirmation or key is missing.
