How to Install VestaCP and Migrate User Data to a New VPS

A command-focused guide to installing VestaCP on a clean VPS, migrating one or all user accounts, restoring selected services, checking stale DNS records and completing a controlled cutover.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The safest way to move VestaCP is to install a clean, supported operating-system image on the replacement VPS, create Vesta user backup archives on the old server, copy those archives into /home/backup on the new server, and restore each account before changing DNS. This preserves Vesta-managed web, DNS, mail, database, cron and user-directory data without copying an entire operating system. Keep the old VPS online until the restored services pass your checks and DNS has had time to update.

What you need before starting

A Vesta migration is a server replacement, not a disk clone. The supported unit is a Vesta user backup archive, so the destination should be a clean VPS rather than an image containing another control panel or an old package set.

Destination requirements

  • A new VPS with a minimal installation of a Linux distribution supported by the Vesta installer: RHEL, CentOS, Debian or Ubuntu, as listed in Vesta Control Panel documentation current in 2026.
  • Root SSH access to both servers. You need root privileges to run the installer, read /home/backup, copy archives and restore accounts.
  • A hostname and networking that your VPS provider allows you to configure. Check the provider’s reverse-DNS and firewall controls before the move, especially if the server will send mail.
  • Enough disk space for the restored accounts plus temporary backup archives. The archive can be comparable to the account’s stored web files, mail and databases, so leave considerable working space rather than allocating only the current data size.
  • A maintenance window long enough to create, transfer, restore and test the largest account. The documentation publishes no universal duration or downtime figure; account size, database and mail volume, network throughput, DNS TTLs and provider configuration determine the result.

Vesta server groups and memory

The 2026 installer documentation groups installations by RAM. These are thresholds used by the installer, not performance guarantees:

Group RAM described by Vesta Package implication
Micro Less than 1 GB Lightest package set
Small Less than 3 GB Light package set
Medium Less than 7 GB Antispam and antivirus packages are installed
Large More than 7 GB Antispam and antivirus packages are installed

Choose a VPS with enough memory for the accounts you will restore, not merely enough to complete the installer. Mail filtering, databases, web workers and backups can all raise usage after the move.

Inventory the old server

Before touching DNS, record every Vesta username, domain, database, mailbox, scheduled task and special service setting. Decide whether you will migrate one account, several accounts or all accounts. Also record the old server’s public IP, nameservers, firewall rules and any provider-level features such as snapshots or external backups. This inventory becomes your verification checklist after restoration.

Install VestaCP on the new VPS

Do this on the clean destination server while the old server continues serving production traffic.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Connect as root over SSH: ssh root@NEW_SERVER_IP. Replace the address with the destination VPS address.
  2. Confirm that the operating system is a supported RHEL, CentOS, Debian or Ubuntu installation and that it has no competing control panel. A minimal image avoids package and service conflicts.
  3. Download the official installer: curl -O https://vestacp.com/pub/vst-install.sh.
  4. Run it as root: bash vst-install.sh.
  5. Follow the installer’s prompts for the hostname, administrator account, email and service selections. Keep a copy of the final credentials in your password manager; do not leave them in shell history or a shared chat.
  6. Wait for the installer to finish and note the panel URL and any service or reboot instructions it prints. Open the panel over HTTPS and sign in before transferring customer data.

The script URL above is the official installer endpoint supplied by Vesta. Review the installer output instead of assuming that every package or service is present on every server group. In particular, antispam and antivirus packages are installed only for the documented Medium and Large groups.

Initial destination checks

  • Sign in to Vesta and verify that the administrator can create or view users.
  • Confirm that the destination has the expected public IP and that SSH remains reachable.
  • Check disk space and mounted filesystems with your provider’s dashboard or normal Linux administration tools.
  • Confirm that the firewall permits SSH and the web, DNS and mail ports required by the services you intend to run. Provider firewalls can block traffic even when the guest operating system is configured correctly.
  • Do not point production nameservers or A/AAAA records at the new address yet. The old server is still authoritative for live traffic.

Create Vesta backups on the old server

Vesta’s documented migration workflow starts by making a user backup on the old server. A per-user archive is usually the easiest way to stage and validate a move.

Back up one user

SSH to the old VPS as root and run:

v-backup-user admin

Replace admin with the exact Vesta account name. Vesta writes the resulting tar archive to the old server’s backup directory, normally /home/backup. The filename contains the username and a date, for example admin.2014-01-14.tar; use the actual filename created on your server rather than copying the example literally.

Back up every user

For an all-user migration, the command-line tools also provide:

v-backup-users

Use the all-user operation only when you have enough storage and transfer capacity for every account. Per-user archives let you move a staged subset, retry a single failed transfer and validate accounts independently.

Confirm that the archive is usable

  • List the backup directory and note the exact archive name, size and modification time.
  • Check that the archive is still being written before copying it; wait for the backup operation to finish and for its size to stop changing.
  • Compare the archive contents with your inventory: web files, mail, databases, DNS, cron and user-directory data may all be present, while provider-level settings outside the Vesta account are not part of a blind operating-system copy.
  • Keep the old account online. Do not delete it after the archive is created; it is your rollback source if validation finds missing data.

Copy archives to the destination backup directory

Vesta expects the tarball in the new server’s /home/backup directory before restoration. From the old server, use secure copy:

scp /home/backup/admin.2014-01-14.tar new-server:/home/backup/

Replace the archive name and new-server with the real path and destination hostname or IP. If SSH uses a non-default port, pass it with scp -P PORT. For a large archive, keep the SSH session stable, use a provider console if available, and verify that the destination file size matches the source after transfer.

Transfer checklist

  • Create /home/backup on the destination if the clean installation did not create it, then set ownership and permissions appropriate for Vesta before copying.
  • Copy one archive at a time when disk space is tight.
  • After each transfer, list the destination file and compare its byte size with the source.
  • Never place an archive in an arbitrary temporary directory and assume Vesta will find it; the documented restore workflow uses /home/backup.
  • Protect archives because they can contain website files, mail and database credentials. Remove temporary copies only after the migration and rollback period ends.

Restore a user on the new VPS

On the destination server, restore the archive with the same username:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
v-restore-user admin admin.2014-01-14.tar

The first argument is the Vesta username to create or restore; the second is the archive filename in /home/backup. The restore operation can include web, DNS, mail, database, cron and user-directory components. Let it complete and read every warning in the terminal output.

Restore under a different username

If the destination username must differ, rename the archive to match the target username and run the restore with that name:

v-restore-user newuser newuser.2014-01-14.tar

Vesta’s documented workflow says the account is created automatically if it does not already exist. Renaming is not a cosmetic change: update your inventory and any application configuration that refers to the old home path, database user or account name.

Choose a full or selective restore

A full account restore is appropriate when the destination should reproduce the old Vesta account. Selective restoration is safer when you are rebuilding a service deliberately or when one component must be handled separately.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Restore scope Use it when Checks required
Web Moving sites and their Vesta web configuration Test HTTP/HTTPS, document roots, certificates and application permissions
DNS Moving zones managed by the Vesta account Inspect nameservers, A/AAAA, MX, SPF, DKIM and other records for old values
Mail Moving mailboxes and messages Test login, delivery, aliases, quotas and spam controls
Databases Moving MySQL or MariaDB data included in the account Check database users, passwords, character sets and application connections
Cron Preserving scheduled jobs Confirm paths, permissions, time zone and duplicate execution risk
User directory Restoring account-owned files and data Check ownership, permissions, uploads and storage usage

Use the restore options documented by Vesta when you need only particular components. Do not assume that a provider’s server-level settings, external object storage, snapshots or manually installed software are included in the user archive.

Validate the restored server before DNS cutover

Validation should happen while the old VPS still answers for the public hostname. Use temporary host-file entries, a staging hostname or direct-IP tests where the application permits, while avoiding changes that could send production mail or authentication traffic to the wrong server.

Web and TLS checks

  • Open each site over HTTP and HTTPS and check the expected status code, redirects and canonical hostname.
  • Test an authenticated area, a form upload and any application that writes to disk.
  • Confirm that certificates are installed for the correct names and that renewal can run on the new host.
  • Review web and application logs for permission errors, missing extensions, incorrect PHP versions or database connection failures.

Database and cron checks

  • Sign in to each application and exercise a read/write operation, not only the login page.
  • Confirm database names, users, passwords and host values in application configuration.
  • Run a scheduled task once in a controlled way, then inspect its log and schedule. Disable duplicate jobs on the old host only after cutover is complete.
  • Check time zone assumptions; a restored cron expression can run at a different local time if the VPS defaults differ.

Mail checks

  • Verify that every mailbox, alias, forwarder and quota is present.
  • Test IMAP or POP access and authenticated SMTP from a controlled account.
  • Send a message out and receive one from an external mailbox. Check headers, spam handling and TLS.
  • Confirm that the destination’s reverse DNS and provider mail policy are suitable. A successful local restore does not guarantee external deliverability.

Fix DNS records before switching traffic

Do not change nameservers immediately after a restore. The myVesta migration walkthrough published on 2020-07-25 warns that imported DNS can still contain the old server’s NS1/NS2 values and IP address. Inspect every restored zone in Vesta and replace stale values before cutover.

Records to inspect

  • A and AAAA records for the root domain, www, application subdomains and APIs.
  • MX records and any mail hostnames, plus SPF, DKIM and DMARC records.
  • NS1 and NS2 values in the zone and at the registrar or DNS provider.
  • TXT verification records, SRV records and third-party service endpoints.
  • Hard-coded old IP addresses in application settings, cron scripts, webhook destinations and firewall allowlists.

There are two separate changes: editing zone records to use the new address, and delegating the domain’s nameservers to a new authoritative service. Make the change that matches your architecture. If Vesta will be authoritative, update the registrar delegation only after the new zones contain correct NS and glue information. If a separate DNS provider remains authoritative, update records there instead of assuming the restored Vesta zone is published.

TTL and propagation planning

Lowering TTLs before a planned move can reduce how long resolvers retain old answers, but the procedure and minimum values are provider-specific. A lower TTL does not force every resolver to refresh immediately, and changing it shortly before the move may not affect caches that already hold the previous value. Verify the authoritative answer and query several independent resolvers after cutover.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

Perform the cutover and monitor it

  1. Freeze changes on the old server or announce a brief maintenance period. This prevents new orders, uploads, mail or database writes from landing on the old copy during the final switch.
  2. Take a final per-user backup for accounts that changed during validation. Transfer and restore it, or repeat the affected component’s migration procedure.
  3. Confirm that the new server’s web, mail, database, cron and DNS checks are passing and that old NS and IP values have been removed.
  4. Update the authoritative A/AAAA, MX or nameserver records according to your DNS design.
  5. Watch both servers and query DNS from more than one network. Expect a transition period because cached records expire at different times.
  6. Check access logs, mail queues, database errors, certificate renewal and scheduled jobs on the new VPS.
  7. Keep the old VPS intact until traffic is consistently reaching the new address and you have a current backup. Do not cancel it as soon as your own workstation resolves the new IP.

Migration choices and their trade-offs

Decision Choice A Choice B When to choose
Backup scope One user with v-backup-user All users with v-backup-users Use one user for staged moves or retries; use all users when the entire panel is moving and storage is sufficient.
Restore scope Full account Selective web, DNS, mail, database, cron or user directory Full restore reproduces the account; selective restore limits unwanted components or supports a rebuild.
Identity Same username Renamed username Keep the name to minimize path changes; rename only when account naming or conflicts require it.
DNS operation Direct manual cutover Staged verification with planned TTL changes Direct changes are simpler; staging gives more time to test but depends on your DNS provider’s controls and cache behavior.
Operations Self-managed VPS Managed VPS support and backups Self-management gives control; managed services may provide assistance, snapshots or provider-level recovery, but confirm what is included.

Troubleshoot common failures

The installer stops or services are missing

Recheck that the image is a clean supported RHEL, CentOS, Debian or Ubuntu installation, that you are root and that another control panel is not installed. Read the installer output for the package or repository that failed. Do not continue a migration onto a partially configured panel; rebuild the clean VPS or resolve the package issue first.

The restore says the archive is missing

Confirm the exact filename, spelling and capitalization, and list /home/backup on the destination. If the archive was copied elsewhere, move it into that directory and verify that the destination file size matches the source. A renamed archive must also be passed to v-restore-user under its new filename.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A site loads but cannot connect to its database

Check that the database component was restored, that the database user and password in the application match the restored credentials, and that the application is using the destination host. Review database and web logs for permission, socket or version errors. Restore the database component again only after preserving the current destination copy.

Mailboxes exist but delivery fails

Verify MX records, the destination mail hostname, reverse DNS, firewall rules and provider restrictions. Test both authenticated submission and inbound delivery. Inspect the queue and message headers; a DNS problem and a reputation or provider-policy problem require different fixes.

Traffic still reaches the old VPS

Query the authoritative nameserver and compare responses from multiple resolvers. Check every A/AAAA, MX and NS value for the old address. Cached answers can persist until their TTL expires, so keep the old server online during the transition rather than deleting data to force a result.

Files or scheduled jobs fail after a username change

Search application configuration, cron commands, webhook scripts and file paths for the old username or home directory. Confirm ownership and permissions on restored files, then run one job manually and inspect its output before re-enabling frequent schedules.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Security and rollback checklist

  • Use a new, strong administrator password and unique SSH credentials on the destination.
  • Restrict SSH and panel access to trusted networks where practical, and enable the provider’s firewall as well as the guest firewall.
  • Treat Vesta archives as sensitive backups; they may contain private files, mail and database secrets.
  • Keep at least one untouched archive on separate storage until the new VPS has a verified backup.
  • Document the exact DNS changes, restore commands, account mapping and validation results.
  • If a critical test fails, return DNS to the old server, stop writes on the new copy and restore from the last known-good archive. Do not delete the old VPS until rollback is no longer needed.

What the documented process does—and does not—promise

The Vesta workflow provides a repeatable path for moving user-owned services: install on a clean supported OS, back up users, copy tarballs to /home/backup, restore them and correct DNS. It does not publish a standard migration time, guaranteed downtime, failure rate or maximum data volume. Your actual window depends on the account contents, transfer path, DNS provider and VPS configuration, so measure the largest archive and test the full sequence before scheduling a customer-facing cutover.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I migrate VestaCP by copying the entire VPS disk?

The documented method uses Vesta user backup archives rather than a blind operating-system copy. Install Vesta on a clean supported image, then restore the required user accounts and components.

Where must I put a Vesta backup before restoring it?

Copy the tar archive into /home/backup on the destination server, then run v-restore-user with the account name and exact archive filename.

Can I restore an account with a different username?

Yes. Rename the archive to the target username and run v-restore-user newuser newuser.2014-01-14.tar; Vesta documentation says the account is created automatically if it does not exist.

Why should DNS be checked after restoring?

Imported zones may retain the old server’s nameserver and IP values. Correct those records and verify web, mail and database services before changing delegation or production records.
