Install Undead Legacy (UL) as a complete server-side overhaul, not as a Mods folder. Pick one UL branch, pin the dedicated server and every client to its matching 7 Days to Die build, copy the entire archive beside the server executable, disable Easy Anti-Cheat (EAC) on both sides, and launch through UL’s loader. Create a new world after backing up existing saves.

What you need before installing
Undead Legacy changes core systems, items, progression and often the user interface. The server and every joining player therefore need the same UL line and the same underlying 7 Days to Die build. A server that loads UL while a client remains on vanilla, a different Alpha branch or another UL build will usually reject the connection or produce missing-content errors.

- A dedicated 7 Days to Die server installation, either self-managed or supplied by a host panel.
- File access to the server’s root directory—the folder containing the dedicated-server executable.
- The complete UL server archive for your selected branch.
- A matching UL client installation for every player.
- Permission to edit the server XML configuration and its start command.
- A backup of saves and configuration before changing branches or creating the overhaul world.
The 2026 dedicated-server guide identifies Steam app 294420 as the separate 7 Days to Die server tool. For a small vanilla server, it records about 6 GB of RAM; an overhaul or a larger group is better planned around 10–16 GB. Treat those figures as planning guidance rather than a hard minimum, because world size, view distance, player count and other server settings change actual use.
Match the UL and 7 Days to Die versions first
Do not download a mod first and try to make the server fit it later. Choose the UL branch, then deliberately install the corresponding game branch on the dedicated server and on every client. At the time of the cited compatibility table, the combinations were:

These build numbers are time-sensitive. Check the current UL download and compatibility information immediately before installation; a later UL release may target a different game build. Steam can silently move a server to its default branch, so select and lock the required branch instead of assuming the latest files are compatible.
Install or pin the dedicated server with SteamCMD
If you run the server yourself, install the separate dedicated-server tool rather than using the game client’s files. A typical anonymous SteamCMD update command is:

Select the game branch required by your UL release in SteamCMD or your management script, and do not run an update that returns the server to an incompatible default. If your host or container image manages branches for you, make the same selection in its control panel or environment variables.
Back up the server before touching files
Stop the service before copying or replacing files. Back up the complete save directory and the server configuration, including any generated world, player data, permissions and custom settings. Keep a separate copy outside the live server folder so a failed update or branch switch cannot overwrite it.

A vanilla save is not a safe starting point for a total overhaul. Undead Legacy changes item definitions, progression and world systems; a save that appears to start can still contain broken blocks, missing items or other irreversible inconsistencies. Plan a fresh world for UL and retain the old save only as a rollback or archive.
Install the complete archive on Windows
Windows requires the loader files supplied with the UL package. Copying only the mod directory will leave the game running vanilla.
- Stop the dedicated server and close any file-transfer session that is still writing to it.
- Extract the entire Windows UL archive directly into the server root—the folder that already contains the 7 Days to Die server executable.
- Confirm that the root now contains
BepInEx,Mods,doorstop_config.iniandwinhttp.dll. The files must be directly beside the executable, not inside an additional folder created by extraction. - Open the server’s XML configuration and set
<property name="EACEnabled" value="false"/>. Preserve the surrounding XML and ensure there is only one active EAC setting. - Use the supplied Windows loader files when starting the server. A plain vanilla executable or an old start script can bypass the loader even when the files are present.
- Start the server and watch the console for BepInEx and UL initialization before attempting to join.
If the archive expands to a folder such as UndeadLegacy containing the files above, move the contents of that folder up one level. The correct result is server-root/BepInEx, server-root/Mods and the loader files—not server-root/UndeadLegacy/BepInEx.
Install the complete archive on Linux
Linux uses a different loader arrangement and must be started with the supplied script.

- Stop the service and back up the save and configuration directories.
- Extract the full Linux UL archive into the server root.
- Verify the presence of
BepInEx,Mods,doorstop_libs,doorstop_config.iniandrun_bepinex_server.shbeside the server executable. - Make the launcher executable if your transfer method did not preserve permissions:
chmod +x run_bepinex_server.sh. - Set
EACEnabledtofalsein the server XML, exactly as on Windows. - When the cited Linux guide’s Mono setup requires it, add
<dllmap dll="dl" target="libdl.so.2"/>to the applicable Mono configuration file. Do not add it blindly to an unrelated XML file; use the Mono config used by your server installation. - Start with
./run_bepinex_server.sh, not the ordinary vanilla start script. The supplied script loads the doorstop/BepInEx chain before the game server.
Run the script from the server root or set its working directory correctly in systemd, Docker or another supervisor. A service that starts in a different directory may fail to find the loader even though the archive is complete.
Disable EAC on the server and every client
Undead Legacy requires EAC to be disabled. The server XML setting alone is not enough: each player must also launch the game with EAC disabled. Use the game launcher’s “disable EAC” or equivalent option (the wording can vary by launcher and build), and make sure the same choice is made whenever the game is started for this server.
Do not mix an EAC-enabled client with an EAC-disabled UL server. That mismatch can prevent joining before the mod’s own version checks run. Tell every player to verify the setting rather than assuming a previous launch option remains selected.
Install UL on players’ computers
- Give every player the same UL branch and exact build used by the server. A stable client cannot join an experimental server, and a different patch of the same line can still change assets or network definitions.
- Install the client package in the player’s 7 Days to Die game directory using the layout required by that UL release. Do not combine files from two UL branches.
- Disable EAC in the game launcher before connecting.
- Have players remove or isolate conflicting overhaul/mod files if the UL instructions call for a clean installation. Mixing unrelated versions can create missing assets and UI errors that look like network problems.
- Connect only after the server console shows that BepInEx and UL have loaded and the new world is ready.
Every player needs the mod; a server-only upload does not distribute the required client assets. Keep a written record of the game build and UL build so late-joining players can reproduce the setup exactly.

Create a fresh UL world
After the server starts with the correct loader, create a new world for the overhaul. Backups are especially important when switching between the stable and experimental lines. Docker-7DaysToDie documentation warns that changing lines should be done only after a backup because generated data may not be compatible in either direction.
Do not delete the old world until the new one has been tested with a player account, storage, crafting and a restart. If you need to preserve the vanilla world, keep it in a separate backup location and change the world-generation or save name rather than overwriting it.

Mod installation does not replace ordinary firewall and port configuration. The 2026 dedicated-server guide lists these default game ports:

Confirm the current game’s networking defaults before opening a firewall, because ports can change with later builds or host images. Allow the required protocols in the host firewall and router, and avoid exposing optional administration ports to the public internet unless they are protected.
Choose between manual, hosted and container installations

Managed-panel installation
Host Havoc documents a control-panel flow in which you stop the service, choose Undead Legacy under Non-Workshop Mods, install the selected version, disable EAC, and restart. Exact menu names and commercial terms can change, so follow the provider’s current panel instructions and verify that the selected game branch matches the UL build. EAC still has to be disabled for every player; a panel cannot change a client’s launcher setting.
Managed hosting reduces operating-system and firewall work, but keep your own save backups and record the selected UL line. If the provider updates the underlying game automatically, an otherwise healthy server can become incompatible overnight.

Docker-7DaysToDie exposes these settings for UL:
UNDEAD_LEGACY=YESenables the overhaul.UNDEAD_LEGACY_VERSION=EXPselects the experimental line.UNDEAD_LEGACY_VERSION=STABLEselects the stable line.
Use persistent mounts for server files and for save/configuration data; Didstopia’s Docker server documentation specifically describes persistent mounts so a container replacement does not erase the world. Pin the game and mod versions where your image supports it, and take a volume backup before changing EXP to STABLE or the reverse.
Troubleshoot the common failure modes
The server starts as vanilla
- Confirm that
BepInEx,Modsand all loader files are in the server root, directly beside the executable. - Check that you extracted the complete archive rather than uploading only
Mods. - On Linux, start
run_bepinex_server.sh; on Windows, use the supplied DLL/configuration files and a loader-aware start command. - Read the startup console for BepInEx initialization. If it never appears, the game is still being launched through a vanilla path.
“Subquake_Items.ulm” is missing, movement freezes or the interface is vanilla
The cited installation guide attributes this combination to a missing second part of the experimental archive. Download every required archive part for that release and copy each part into the server root, then verify that extraction did not create nested directories. Repeat the same completeness check on clients.
Players cannot connect
- Compare the exact 7 Days to Die branch and build on the server and every client.
- Compare the exact UL line and build, including stable versus experimental.
- Confirm EAC is disabled in the server XML and in each client launcher.
- Check that the server actually loaded UL rather than starting vanilla.
- Only after those checks, investigate firewall, router and port-forwarding settings.
Files are one directory too deep
Open the server root and look for BepInEx, Mods and the loader files. If they are inside another folder, move the contents up one level, restart and inspect the console again. This is one of the most frequent causes of a clean-looking but unmodded startup.
The server broke after switching branches
Stop immediately and restore the pre-switch save and configuration backup. Reinstall the intended game branch and UL line as a matched pair. Do not test an experimental and stable installation against the same live save; use separate directories or restored copies.
A repeatable update and recovery routine
- Record the current game build, UL build, launch command and configuration changes.
- Stop the service cleanly.
- Copy saves, player data, configuration and the current mod archive to dated backup storage.
- Update the dedicated server only to the game branch named by the new UL release.
- Replace the complete UL archive, retaining no files from an unrelated branch unless the release instructions explicitly require them.
- Verify the root layout, EAC setting and loader command.
- Start in a test environment or with a copied save, inspect the log, and connect with one client.
- Promote the update to the live world only after loading, crafting, storage and a restart work correctly.
This process takes longer than copying a new Mods folder, but it gives you a rollback when a game patch or experimental UL build changes compatibility.
