Install Oxide.Ext.Discord.dll in your Rust server’s application Managed directory—not in oxide/plugins—while the server is stopped. Start the server again, confirm Oxide/uMod loads the extension, then install a Discord feature plugin and configure its bot token. Oxide/uMod must already be working; verify that first with oxide.version.

What the Discord extension does
Oxide.Ext.Discord.dll is an Oxide/uMod extension that provides a bridge between a Rust server and Discord. It is not itself a chat, relay, moderation, or logging plugin. A separate Oxide plugin uses the bridge to provide the behavior players see, such as Discord chat integration or server notifications.

- Oxide/uMod: the server mod framework. It must be installed and functioning before the Discord extension can load.
- The extension DLL:
Oxide.Ext.Discord.dll, placed beside the Rust server’s managed assemblies. - A Discord feature plugin: a compatible
.csplugin placed inoxide/plugins. This plugin calls the extension and normally contains the configuration entry for a Discord bot token.
Installing only the DLL does not create a Discord bot connection or add commands. Conversely, placing a feature plugin in oxide/plugins without installing its required extension leaves the plugin unable to perform Discord requests.
Prerequisites and checks before you copy anything
Confirm that Oxide/uMod is installed
Open the Rust server console, or use server chat if your setup permits administrative console commands, and run:

oxide.versionA version response confirms that Oxide/uMod is present and responding. If the command is unknown or produces no Oxide response, repair the Oxide/uMod installation first. The Discord extension cannot compensate for a missing framework. The hosting environment must support Oxide 2.0 or higher.
Identify how you access the server
On a self-managed machine, you need access to the Rust server’s installation directory and permission to stop and start the dedicated server. On a rented or managed host, use the provider’s FTP client or web file manager and confirm that your account can reach the Rust application files. You also need a restart control; copying a DLL while the process is running does not reliably load it.
Choose the feature plugin before configuring Discord
Decide what you actually want Discord to do—chat relay, notifications, administration, or another integration—and select a plugin that supports the extension version you intend to run. Read the plugin’s dependency declaration before downloading it. The extension and plugin are separate downloads and may have separate release schedules.
Prepare a safe backup and maintenance window
Stop the server before replacing an existing extension. Keep a copy of the current DLL and the relevant plugin configuration so you can roll back if the new major version is incompatible. Tell players about the downtime if the server is public; the extension change requires a process restart.
Where the DLL belongs
The correct destination is the Managed directory inside the Rust dedicated-server installation. The common layout is:

RustDedicated/ManagedUse the directory that contains the Rust server’s managed application assemblies. The directory name can vary by host, operating system, deployment method, or update layout, so do not assume that every provider presents the same parent folders.

Do not put the DLL in oxide/plugins. That folder is for C# source plugins, which Oxide compiles when they are placed there. The Discord extension is a compiled library and belongs with the Rust application’s managed files.
Step-by-step installation
1. Verify the baseline
- Connect to the server console or an authorized in-game chat channel.
- Run
oxide.version. - Record the returned Oxide/uMod version and confirm that plugins already load normally. If Oxide is not responding, stop here and fix that installation.
2. Stop the Rust server
Use the dedicated server console, host panel, service manager, or control panel to perform a clean stop. Wait until the process has exited before touching the extension file. Oxide’s extension-loading model generally requires a restart; a live file replacement is not a substitute for restarting.
3. Obtain the extension release
Download the current Oxide.Ext.Discord release from the uMod extension page or the project’s release source. If the download is an archive, extract it locally. You are looking for a file named exactly:
Oxide.Ext.Discord.dllDo not rename the file, upload an archive instead of the DLL, or accidentally select a similarly named source or documentation file.

4. Open the Rust installation
Browse to the directory that contains the Rust dedicated-server executable and its data folders. Open RustDedicated_Data when that folder exists, then open Managed. If your host uses the alternate layout, open the top-level RustDedicated/Managed directory instead.
5. Copy the DLL
Upload or copy Oxide.Ext.Discord.dll directly into that Managed directory. Do not nest it in a new subfolder. If a file with the same name already exists, preserve a backup and then replace it while the server remains stopped.

6. Start the server and inspect the console
Start the server through the same control mechanism used to stop it. Watch the startup console for extension-loading errors. A clean startup does not by itself prove that a bot is authenticated; it proves that the server had an opportunity to load the bridge. Keep the console output available while you install and load the feature plugin.
7. Install the Discord feature plugin separately
Upload the chosen compatible Discord plugin’s .cs file to:

The plugin, rather than the bare extension, determines what Discord actions are available.
Connecting a Discord bot safely
Create the bot credentials
Create a Discord application and bot in Discord’s developer interface, then obtain the bot token. The extension project describes the API key as the credential that authenticates requests to and from Discord and gives this warning: “DO NOT SHARE YOUR API KEY!” Treat the token as a password.
Enter the token only where the plugin expects it
Open the configuration file or plugin setting identified by the feature plugin. Paste the token there and save it exactly as issued. Do not put it in the DLL filename, the Managed directory name, a server command visible to other administrators, or a public chat message.
- Never publish the token in a screenshot, support post, log excerpt, or source-control repository.
- Restrict access to the host’s file manager and configuration backups.
- If the token is exposed, regenerate it in Discord’s developer interface and replace the old value in the plugin configuration.
Channel IDs, guild identifiers, permissions, and intent settings are feature-plugin concerns. Use the plugin’s own documentation for those values rather than assuming that installing the extension configures them automatically.

Version compatibility: check before every upgrade
Compatibility is a gate, not an optional troubleshooting detail. Read the feature plugin’s declared dependency and compare its required Discord extension major version with the DLL you plan to install.

Major-version changes can alter APIs that plugins call. Before an upgrade, record the current extension version, plugin versions, configuration files, and backups. Upgrade during a maintenance window, start the server, and inspect both extension and plugin messages. If a plugin fails immediately after the change, restore the previous DLL or install a plugin release that declares support for the new major version.
Remote-host installation
The file path is conceptually the same on a remote server, but the interface is different. Use FTP or the host’s web file manager to reach the Rust application’s Managed directory, and use the control panel’s stop/start controls. Ask the provider to confirm all of the following before purchasing or redeploying a server:

If you cannot see the Rust application files, do not upload the DLL to a guessed directory. Ask the host where its Rust Managed directory is located and whether your plan permits replacing extension files. If the provider cannot give you restart permissions, you cannot complete the installation independently.
Verify the complete integration
Check the layers in order so a failure is attributed to the right component:
- Framework:
oxide.versionresponds. - Extension: the startup console does not report that
Oxide.Ext.Discord.dllis missing or cannot load. - Feature plugin: its
.csfile compiles and loads fromoxide/plugins. - Credentials: the plugin accepts the bot token without an authentication error.
- Behavior: perform the plugin’s documented test, such as sending a chat message or triggering a notification, and verify the corresponding Discord result.
A successful first step does not validate the later ones. For example, a valid Oxide response can coexist with a misplaced DLL, and a loaded extension can coexist with an invalid or revoked bot token.
Troubleshooting by symptom
oxide.version fails
Oxide/uMod is not installed correctly, is not running for this server instance, or the command is being sent to the wrong console. Repair or reinstall Oxide/uMod and confirm the framework with the same command before investigating Discord files.

Stop the server and check the filename and path. It must be exactly Oxide.Ext.Discord.dll in the Rust application’s Managed directory. The most common mistake is uploading it to oxide/plugins, which accepts C# source plugins, not this compiled extension. Also check for an extra archive folder created during extraction.
The server reports that the extension cannot load
Confirm that the upload completed, that the file is not still compressed, and that you used the release intended for your server’s current Oxide/uMod environment. Restore the previous known-good DLL if the error began after an upgrade, then compare the feature plugin’s declared major-version dependency before trying again.
A Discord plugin fails after an extension upgrade
Compare the plugin’s required major version with the installed DLL. uMod specifically states that plugins made for extension versions 1.0.0 or 2.0.0 are not compatible with version 3.0.0. Install a plugin release that supports the new major version or roll back the extension and plugin as a matched pair.
Discord authentication fails
Re-enter the bot token carefully in the plugin’s configuration and check whether it has been regenerated or revoked. If the token has appeared in a public log, screenshot, support request, or repository, regenerate it before testing again. The token is the API key used for Discord requests; changing unrelated file paths will not repair invalid credentials.

The plugin compiles but no messages arrive
Separate loading from behavior. Confirm that the extension loaded, then read the feature plugin’s configuration for the target guild, channel, permissions, and event settings. Test the behavior the plugin documents rather than assuming every Discord plugin relays the same events. A compiled plugin can still be disabled by its own configuration or Discord-side permissions.
Remote access is unavailable
Contact the host and request FTP or file-manager access to the Rust installation, plus permission to stop and start the server. Without access to Managed and a restart control, the provider must perform the installation or move you to a plan that exposes those controls.
Safe replacement and rollback procedure
- Stop the server and wait for the process to exit.
- Copy the current
Oxide.Ext.Discord.dll, feature plugin files, and configuration to a dated backup location. - Check the target plugin’s dependency declaration against the replacement extension’s major version.
- Upload the replacement DLL to the same
Manageddirectory, preserving the exact filename. - Start the server and watch the console for extension and plugin errors.
- Run the plugin’s documented Discord test.
- If loading or compatibility fails, stop the server, restore the backed-up DLL and matching plugin version, and start it again.
Keep the extension and the plugins that depend on it as a documented set. Replacing only one side can turn a previously working integration into a version mismatch.
