The original project notes that later DayZ updates repeatedly broke mods, so treat this as legacy documentation: confirm that the exact server build, client build, and hosting panel still accept the mod before using it on a live server.
Prefer not to run the server on your own PC? Godlike.Host offers hosted DayZ servers with free DDoS protection and up to three free backups a day.
The installation itself requires the mod folder on both server and client, the supplied SchnitzelPommes.bikey in the server’s keys directory, the -mod=DayZ-SA-Tomato launch parameter, and a profiles directory containing Tomato_Profiles. Initial activation is performed in game with #login, /opme, a server restart, and then the M key.

Use a copy of the project archive that contains the folder named exactly DayZ-SA-Tomato, its keys subfolder, and the Tomato_Profiles folder. You need file access to the DayZ server root, permission to edit the server’s launch parameters, and access to the client’s local DayZ installation. Keep the server stopped while copying files or editing configuration.
- Server access: You must be able to copy files into the server root and its
keysdirectory. - Launch-parameter access: You need to add
-mod=DayZ-SA-Tomatoand, when necessary, a-profilespath. - Profiles access: You must be able to place
Tomato_Profilesin the directory used by the server for profiles. - Client access: The same mod folder must be available in the local DayZ installation and enabled as a Local Mod in the DayZ Launcher.
- Admin password: Have the password configured for the server’s built-in administrator login.
- Backup: Save copies of the existing launch parameters and server profiles before changing them.
Do not assume that a directory literally named profiles is being used. DayZ can use any directory supplied through -profiles; what matters is that the server’s active profiles path contains Tomato_Profiles.

How the files fit together
| Item | Where it goes | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
DayZ-SA-Tomato folder |
DayZ server root and client DayZ root | The server and every connecting client must load the same mod. |
SchnitzelPommes.bikey |
Server root keys folder |
The server uses the signature key to accept the mod’s signed files. |
Tomato_Profiles |
The directory passed to -profiles |
Stores feature settings, player records, and message configuration. |
-mod=DayZ-SA-Tomato |
Server start parameters | Tells DayZ to load the mod as a server-and-client mod. |
| Local Mod entry | DayZ Launcher on each client | Loads the copied client folder when joining the server. |
Preserve the folder name and capitalization. A launch parameter that names DayZ-SA-Tomato will not find a folder renamed to something such as Tomato or DayZ-SA-Tomato-master.

Copy the mod to the server
With the server stopped, copy the complete
DayZ-SA-Tomatofolder into the DayZ server root. The result should resemble<server root>/DayZ-SA-Tomato. Do not copy only selected subfolders; the launch parameter expects the complete mod directory. -
Copy the same mod to the client
Copy the complete folder into the client’s DayZ installation root. The client copy must be the same version as the server copy. Keeping both copies from the same extracted archive avoids mismatched files.

Configure features and messages
Tomato’s feature switches are stored in Tomato_Profiles/Config/Config.txt under the active profiles path. Stop the server before editing the file, make a backup, and change only the trailing value for the feature you want to enable. A switch ending in 0 is disabled; changing that value to 1 enables it.
Keep the setting name, the equals sign, and the spacing before the value unchanged. When editing custom messages, do not alter text before the equals sign, the equals sign itself, or placeholders enclosed in braces. Removing a placeholder can leave the menu or message formatter without the value it expects.
Save the file, start the server, and test one change at a time. If a setting has no visible effect, verify that you edited the file under the directory actually supplied to -profiles, rather than a second copy left in the extracted mod folder.
Give access to another Steam64 administrator

- Stop the server before editing records.
- Open
Tomato_Profiles/Config/Players/under the active profiles directory. - Find the file named with the player’s Steam64 ID, for example
<STEAM64ID>.player. Confirm the ID carefully; changing the wrong file grants access to a different account. - Change
Admin = 0toAdmin = 1. - In
Tomato_Profiles/Config/Config.txt, setSetup = 1. - Save both files, restart the server, and have the player rejoin.
- Test the

Use the same procedure for each additional administrator, creating no shared password or copied player file. Each Steam64 ID must map to its own .player record.
Launch parameters: -mod, -servermod, and profiles
DayZ’s general mod guidance uses -mod= for mods required by both server and clients. The Tomato README specifically calls for:
-mod=DayZ-SA-Tomato
-servermod= is intended for server-only mods. Do not move Tomato to -servermod simply because the server starts; doing so can leave clients without the files they need and conflicts with the project’s documented setup unless a current Tomato build explicitly says otherwise.
When several mods are loaded, separate entries with semicolons and keep the host’s documented order. For example:
-mod=SomeDependency;DayZ-SA-Tomato;AnotherClientMod
Only use an example like this after checking the actual folder names. A semicolon list containing a typo is functionally the same as omitting that mod. If a dependency must load first, place it before Tomato according to that dependency’s instructions.

- Lightweight, Classic fit, Double-needle sleeve and bottom hem
The profiles option is independent of the mod option. -profiles=CustomProfiles tells DayZ where to write profile data; Tomato expects Tomato_Profiles beneath that location. If the server panel already supplies a profiles path, use that existing path and place the Tomato folder there instead of adding a second, conflicting option.

Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Managed-host installation
A managed host may hide the server executable and restrict direct file access. Some panels document a Tomato workflow that installs the folder through the panel’s DayZ directory, copies the signature key to the server keys directory, enables the local client mod, and then edits the generated player file. Panel labels, permissions, and supported DayZ versions can change, so follow the host’s current instructions for the equivalent paths.
| Requirement | Self-managed server | Managed host panel |
|---|---|---|
| Launch parameters | You edit the start command directly and add -mod=DayZ-SA-Tomato plus the required profiles path. |
The panel may expose a command-line field, a mod selector, or no editable parameter at all. |
| Signature key | Copy SchnitzelPommes.bikey into the server root keys directory. |
Use the panel’s file manager or mod installer to place the key in the server keys directory. |
| Profiles | Move Tomato_Profiles into the directory named by -profiles. |
Locate the panel’s generated profiles directory; it may not be called profiles. |
| Client distribution | Each player copies the mod locally and enables it as a Local Mod. | The host may provide a download or still require every player to install the local copy. |
| Admin records | Edit Config/Players/<STEAM64ID>.player after stopping the server. |
Use the panel’s file editor if it permits access, then set Admin = 1 and Setup = 1. |
| Compatibility control | You control the exact server build and can roll back files. | Ask whether the host still supports this discontinued mod before committing to a production server. |
If the panel has a one-click mod installer, verify the resulting folder name and generated launch parameter rather than assuming the installer used DayZ-SA-Tomato. The folder name, key location, and profiles path must still match the documented layout.
Troubleshooting by symptom
The server fails to start after adding Tomato
- Compare the launch parameter with the extracted folder name character for character.
- Remove accidental quotation marks, duplicate
-modoptions, or a second profiles option supplied by the panel. - Check that the mod folder is in the server root, not one directory deeper inside an archive wrapper.
- Restore the backed-up start command, then add only
-mod=DayZ-SA-Tomatoand test before adding other changes.
The server reports a signature or key problem
- Confirm that
SchnitzelPommes.bikeyis directly inside the server root’skeysfolder. - Check that the file was not left inside
DayZ-SA-Tomato/keysonly. - Ensure the server and client use files from the same archive and that no older copy is being loaded.
The client cannot join or reports a mod mismatch
- Confirm that the client copy is in the local DayZ root and enabled through Local Mod.
- Compare the client and server folder contents and replace either copy with a fresh extraction if they differ.
- Verify that the launch parameter names the same folder the client is using.
The M key does nothing
- Confirm that you completed
#login ADMINPW, then/opme, and restarted the server before testing. - Check that you rejoined with the Local Mod enabled.
- Stop the server and open the player file matching your Steam64 ID.
- Set
Admin = 1in that file andSetup = 1inConfig.txt. - Restart and test again. If it still fails, verify that the files are under the active
-profilesdirectory.
The configuration change has no effect
- Make sure the edited file is
Tomato_Profiles/Config/Config.txtin the live profiles directory. - Change only the final
0or1value for a feature switch. - Restart the server after saving; do not expect a running instance to reload every setting.
An administrator was given access accidentally
Stop the server, open the affected Steam64-ID player file, change Admin = 1 back to Admin = 0, save, and restart. Check nearby player files for any other unintended changes before bringing the server online.
Operational and security precautions
- Keep the server administrator password private. Anyone who can use
#loginwith that password can authenticate through DayZ’s administrator mechanism. - Grant menu access by individual Steam64 ID rather than sharing edited player files.
- Back up
Tomato_Profilesbefore changing feature switches, messages, or player permissions. - Record the exact server build, client build, mod archive, launch parameters, and profiles path used for a working installation.
- Test on a staging instance first. A mod that worked on an older DayZ build may fail after an update, and a host panel may silently change its startup layout.
- After every DayZ or host-panel update, verify that the server still loads the folder, accepts the key, and creates player records in the expected profiles directory.
Removing or rolling back the mod
To roll back safely, stop the server, remove DayZ-SA-Tomato from the server launch parameters, and restore the previous parameter set. Keep the Tomato_Profiles backup in case you return to the same build. Remove the client Local Mod entry or delete the copied client folder only after confirming that no other setup depends on it. The SchnitzelPommes.bikey file can remain in the keys directory, but removing it with the mod keeps the server’s key set tidy; do not delete keys used by other installed mods.
