Install Bitterroot in four parts: download Workshop item 2906823750, place it in a server mod folder such as @Bitterroot, copy its current .bikey files into the server’s root keys directory, and add the folder to -mod=. Then copy the author’s empty.Bitterroot mission directory directly into mpmissions and configure the mission template to use that exact name.
Godlike.Host offers hosted DayZ servers with its own game panel, SFTP access and free DDoS protection, if you would rather not host it yourself.
The most common startup failure is a path or spelling mismatch: the server must load the mod from -mod= and find <server-root>mpmissionsempty.Bitterroot. Stop the server before changing files, keep client and server Workshop versions compatible, and use the RPT log to identify the next error instead of changing several settings at once.

Bitterroot is a custom DayZ terrain set by Mattty-Ice-, depicting a fictional Montana region. The Steam Workshop listing describes an approximately 155 km² map. Its Workshop download was listed at 6.816 GB on the page update shown 18 May 2025, so allow substantially more than 6.816 GB for temporary download space, unpacking and backups.
This is not a self-contained “subscribe and start” map. The terrain is one part of the installation; the author’s mission files are a separate download. The repository supplies a mission directory named empty.Bitterroot, and its README tells administrators to upload that directory into the hosting server’s mpmissions folder. Use that directory name exactly. Renaming it to a more familiar template is a frequent cause of the “no world with name ‘bitterroot’” error.

The author also warns that development work may remain unfinished: “Bitterroot is a custom made map, meaning it will have elements that are unpolished and imperfect.” The Workshop description further says, “Use of the map is not suitable or recommended until the Mission Files have been released upon completion of the map’s development.” Treat the current Workshop listing and mission repository as the authority for compatibility; both can change as the map develops.
Files and access you need
- A DayZ server installation with permission to edit its root folder, launch parameters and
mpmissionsdirectory. - A supported Workshop downloader. SteamCMD is shown below, but a control panel’s Workshop installer is also suitable when it places the files where your launch configuration can reach them.
- Workshop item
2906823750for Bitterroot. - The ZIP from the author’s Bitterroot-DayZ GitHub repository, containing
empty.Bitterroot. - Enough storage and upload bandwidth for the 6.816 GB Workshop item, its unpacked files, updates and at least one rollback copy.
- RPT-log access. Without the log, you may see only a generic startup failure while the actual missing file or class is recorded several lines earlier.
The author suggests NateLapt Bitterroot_Gamelabs_Icons as a companion server-side mod. The Workshop page labels it as suggested, not as a mandatory Bitterroot dependency. Install it only if your server’s chosen configuration needs it and follow its own installation instructions.

Install Bitterroot step by step
1. Stop the server and make a rollback copy
Stop the DayZ process before downloading, replacing or renaming mod files. Copy the current launch script, configuration files and mpmissions directory to a dated backup location. A backup lets you restore a known-working mission if a new Workshop build changes a class or terrain definition.
Do not update a live server while players are connected. Files can be partially replaced while the process is reading them, producing crashes that disappear after a clean restart but leave no reliable diagnosis.
2. Download the Workshop item
With SteamCMD, the documented pattern is:
steamcmd.exe +force_install_dir "C:DayZServer" +login <account> +workshop_download_item 221100 2906823750 +quit
Replace C:DayZServer with the actual server directory and use the authentication method appropriate to your SteamCMD setup. App ID 221100 is the DayZ application; 2906823750 is Bitterroot’s Workshop item ID. A hosting control panel may expose the same operation as “install Workshop item”; enter the item ID rather than searching by a shortened name.
After the download completes, locate the item’s files. Workshop download caches often use numeric directories, so do not assume that numeric folder is the name you should put in the launch parameter. The folder referenced by -mod= must contain the mod’s PBO content and its config.cpp at the expected level.

C:DayZServer@Bitterroot
If your host manages Workshop folders automatically, use its supported mapping or a junction/symlink rather than moving files behind the panel’s back. The important result is that the path in -mod= resolves to the directory containing Bitterroot’s PBO files and config.cpp. Avoid nesting the actual mod one level too deep, for example @BitterrootBitterrootaddons, unless your host explicitly documents that layout.
4. Install the public keys
Open Bitterroot’s keys folder and copy every current .bikey file into the server root’s keys directory:
C:DayZServer@Bitterrootkeys*.bikey → C:DayZServerkeys
These public keys support DayZ’s client-server signature verification. Copy all keys supplied by the current mod build, not only one file whose name looks relevant. If an update adds, removes or replaces keys, refresh the server’s copies during the same maintenance window.
5. Add Bitterroot to the launch parameter
Put the map in the client-facing -mod= list. Separate entries with semicolons and do not insert spaces. For example:
-mod=@CF;@Bitterroot
The exact list depends on the rest of your server. Keep framework or library dependencies before Bitterroot when their documentation requires that order. If you use additional client-facing mods, append them in the order your complete mod set requires. Do not put the map in -servermod=: server-only logic belongs there, but a terrain that clients must load belongs in -mod=.
In a Windows batch file, quote a path only when your launcher requires it; do not add quotation marks inside the semicolon-delimited mod names unless that launcher’s syntax specifically calls for them. In a control panel, enter the same semicolon-delimited value in the field labelled “Mods,” “Mod parameter” or equivalent, then verify the generated command line in the panel’s startup view.
6. Download and install the mission files
Download the ZIP from the author’s Bitterroot-DayZ GitHub repository and extract it locally. The required directory is:

empty.Bitterroot
Upload that directory directly beneath the server’s mpmissions folder:
C:DayZServermpmissionsempty.Bitterroot
“Directly” matters. The correct result is not mpmissionsBitterroot-DayZ-mainempty.Bitterroot and not mpmissionsempty.Bitterrootempty.Bitterroot. Open the directory in your file manager or FTP client and confirm that its mission files are immediately inside the folder named empty.Bitterroot.
The repository README describes the upload operation in plain terms: “All you will need to do is download the ZIP in the Github repository and then upload into the mpmissions folder wherever you are hositng your server.” Preserve the author’s capitalization and punctuation in the folder name even if your operating system is case-insensitive; Linux hosts and some control panels can treat differently cased names as different paths.
7. Set the mission template to the exact folder name
Configure the server’s mission or template setting to empty.Bitterroot. Depending on your hosting method, this may be a -mission= launch argument, a control-panel field called “Mission,” or a value in the server configuration. The setting must point to the directory name under mpmissions, not to the Workshop item ID and not to a world name typed from memory.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsKeep the map mod and mission selection together: -mod=@Bitterroot provides the terrain definitions, while empty.Bitterroot supplies the mission files that select and configure the map. Supplying only one of the two leaves the server unable to create a valid world.
8. Start once and read the RPT log
Start the server and wait for a complete initialization attempt. Open the newest RPT log and search for the first occurrence of terms such as missing world, cannot load, signature, missing class or script error. The first meaningful error is usually more useful than a later cascade of failures.
A successful test should show the server progressing beyond mission creation and remaining online without immediately returning to the shell or control panel’s stopped state. Connect with a test client only after the server has completed startup; a client that joins during a failed initialization can add misleading connection errors to the log.

Client installation and version parity
Because Bitterroot is terrain content, it is a client-facing mod. Every player who connects must have the required Bitterroot Workshop item installed and enabled, along with any other client-facing dependencies your server uses. The server and clients need compatible versions; a player’s older Workshop copy can be rejected even when the folder name is correct.
What players should do
- Stop the game or launcher before updating the Workshop item.
- Update or verify the Bitterroot Workshop subscription so its files match the server’s current build.
- Enable Bitterroot in the launcher’s mod list for this server.
- Enable any other required client-facing dependencies in the same order or collection supplied by the server administrator.
- Reconnect only after the server administrator confirms the update and restart are complete.
Do not place Bitterroot in a client’s server-only mod list. Conversely, do not place server-only logic in -mod= merely because it appears in the same control panel; server-only content belongs in -servermod= and should be installed according to that mod’s instructions.
Self-hosted server versus managed hosting
Either arrangement can run Bitterroot, but the deciding factor is whether you can control the mod path, mission upload and launch parameters. Confirm these capabilities before renting or migrating a server.
| Requirement | Self-hosted server | Managed host |
|---|---|---|
| Workshop download | Run SteamCMD or another supported downloader and maintain the files yourself. | Use the host’s Workshop installer or request installation; confirm it supports item ID 2906823750. |
| Mod path | Choose a stable folder such as @Bitterroot, or use a junction/symlink. |
Verify the panel exposes the generated -mod= value and does not overwrite custom folders. |
| Mission upload | Copy empty.Bitterroot directly into mpmissions. |
Require FTP, file-manager or support access that permits a custom mission directory. |
| Storage and bandwidth | Reserve space for the 6.816 GB Workshop item, extraction, updates and backups. | Check disk quota, upload limits and whether the provider counts Workshop files against your plan. |
| Keys and logs | Copy .bikey files into the root keys directory and inspect RPT files locally. |
Confirm that you can upload keys and download or view RPT logs without provider intervention. |
| Rollback | Keep dated copies of the mod, mission and launch configuration. | Ask whether snapshots or file backups cover both Workshop content and mpmissions. |
| Companion mods | Install suggested server-side additions only when you can manage their keys and dependencies. | Confirm support for custom maps and server-side companion mods before ordering. |
No particular hosting provider is required by Bitterroot. The practical test is access to the exact folders and settings above, plus enough storage and bandwidth for a large terrain download.

Fixing “No world with name ‘bitterroot’”
This message usually means the server cannot connect the map definition, mission directory or launch configuration. Check the following in order:
- Confirm the mod parameter. The launch command must contain
@Bitterrootin-mod=, not only in-servermod=and not in a disabled panel field. - Confirm the physical folder. Inspect the path referenced by the launch parameter. It must contain Bitterroot’s PBO files and
config.cpp, rather than only a Workshop cache directory or an extra nested folder. - Confirm the mission name. The directory under
mpmissionsmust be spelled exactlyempty.Bitterroot, including the period and capitalization. - Confirm the mission setting. The mission/template value must also be
empty.Bitterroot. Do not enterbitterrootas a guessed world name. - Restart after every path correction. DayZ reads the mod and mission structure at startup; changing files while it is running does not reliably reload them.
A Workshop discussion records this error and reinforces the importance of exact naming and path checks, but community workarounds should not replace the author’s current mission-file instructions.
Other common failures and their fixes
“Player kicked: Modified data” or a signature error
- Stop the server.
- Copy every current Bitterroot
.bikeyfrom the mod’skeysdirectory into the server rootkeysdirectory. - Have the affected player verify or update the Workshop copy.
- Confirm that the player and server are using compatible mod builds, then restart the server.
A key copied from an old build may not validate a newer PBO set. Refresh keys whenever the updated mod supplies a changed key set.
Best Value
The server starts, but the mission is empty or does not load
Re-download the author’s ZIP and inspect the extraction result. Make sure empty.Bitterroot is directly under mpmissions, not nested inside the repository’s top-level folder or duplicated one directory deep. Compare the mission directory name with the configured mission value character for character. Then review the RPT log for a missing class or script error that may indicate a dependency or incomplete upload.

Stop the server, retain a copy of the previously working files, update the Workshop content, refresh the keys, check dependency order and restart. Read the RPT log before changing the mission or adding unrelated mods. If the new build is incompatible with your current mission files, restore the backup while checking the author’s current Workshop description and repository for a matching release.
A control panel keeps reverting the setting
Some panels regenerate launch arguments from separate fields. Save the mod list, mission value and key files through the panel’s documented interface, then inspect the generated command line. If @Bitterroot disappears or is moved to -servermod=, the panel configuration—not the DayZ files—is the immediate problem. Ask the host to enable custom launch parameters or custom missions if those controls are locked.
Updating Bitterroot safely
Map updates can change PBOs, keys, dependencies or mission expectations. Use a repeatable maintenance sequence:
- Announce downtime and stop the server.
- Back up the current
@Bitterrootfolder, rootkeysdirectory, launch configuration andmpmissionsempty.Bitterroot. - Download the updated Workshop item and compare the resulting folder layout with the previous installation.
- Copy all keys from the updated mod into the server root’s
keysdirectory, removing obsolete keys only when your normal server key policy permits it. - Check the author’s mission repository for updated files and replace
empty.Bitterrootwhen the mission release requires it. - Verify that the launch parameter still uses
-mod=@Bitterrootand that the mission setting still usesempty.Bitterroot. - Start the server, inspect the RPT log, and test a connection before announcing that it is available.
- Tell players to update their Workshop copies before they reconnect.
Keep the old mod and mission backup until the new build has passed a complete startup and connection test. This is especially important while the author describes Bitterroot as still in development.
Pre-launch checklist
- Server stopped during every file change.
- Workshop item ID
2906823750downloaded successfully. - Mod folder used by the launch command is named
@Bitterrootor another stable name you control. - That folder contains the mod’s PBO files and
config.cppat the expected level. - All current
.bikeyfiles are in<server-root>keys. empty.Bitterrootis directly under<server-root>mpmissions.- The mission/template setting is exactly
empty.Bitterroot. - Bitterroot appears in
-mod=, not only-servermod=. - Framework dependencies precede Bitterroot when required by their documentation.
- Storage remains available for the 6.816 GB Workshop download, unpacking and backups.
- Clients have matching, current Workshop versions.
- The first startup after installation or update has been checked in the RPT log.
The Bottom Line
Bitterroot works when the Workshop terrain, its public keys, the author’s empty.Bitterroot mission and the launch configuration all agree. Install the map through -mod=, place the mission directory directly under mpmissions, preserve the exact names, and update clients and server together.
