On a supported 64-bit Ubuntu system, install Anaconda Distribution by downloading the matching Linux shell installer, optionally checking its SHA-256 hash, running it with bash, allowing conda to initialize your shell, and then reloading the shell. The current Linux installers require glibc 2.28 or newer, list Ubuntu 20.04 among supported systems, and need at least 5 GB of free disk space.
Need a server to try this on? Antihost offers Linux VPS plans with NVMe storage, full root access and a 14-day free trial.
This guide covers x86_64 and ARM64 Ubuntu, verification, shell setup, Navigator, environment creation, licensing considerations, troubleshooting, and clean removal.

Before you install: check Ubuntu, CPU architecture, glibc, and disk space
Anaconda Distribution is a complete Python and conda bundle rather than a small Python runtime. Confirm that the computer meets the current Linux requirements before downloading an installer. The current Linux packages support 64-bit x86 and 64-bit ARM systems; a 32-bit Ubuntu installation is not a match for either script.
Check the processor architecture
Open Terminal and run:
uname -m
The result determines which installer you need:
x86_64means a conventional 64-bit Intel or AMD Ubuntu installation.aarch64means 64-bit ARM Ubuntu, such as on some ARM servers and single-board computers.
Do not use the x86_64 script on an aarch64 machine, or vice versa. A mismatched installer will not produce a usable installation. If the command prints another architecture, consult Anaconda’s current Linux support table before proceeding rather than trying to rename a script.

Check the Ubuntu release and glibc
These commands show the Ubuntu release and the GNU C Library version:
lsb_release -ds
getconf GNU_LIBC_VERSION
The current Anaconda Linux installers require glibc 2.28 or newer. Ubuntu 20.04 is listed among supported Linux systems; older releases such as Ubuntu 16.04 do not meet the stated glibc floor. If your system is older, upgrade Ubuntu or use a distribution release that satisfies the current requirements instead of forcing the installer. Copying a newer library into an old operating system can break unrelated programs and is not a supported workaround.
Confirm free space
df -h /
Allow at least 5 GB of free disk space for downloading and installing Anaconda Distribution. That is a minimum, not a recommendation for a long-lived data-science workstation. A larger margin is sensible because conda environments, package caches, notebooks, and datasets consume additional space after installation. If your home directory is on a separate filesystem, check that mount as well, since a full home partition can stop an otherwise valid installation.
Anaconda Distribution or Miniconda?
Choose the installer according to how much you want preconfigured. Anaconda Distribution creates a broad, ready-to-use data-science installation. Miniconda starts with the essentials and leaves package selection to you.
| Consideration | Anaconda Distribution | Miniconda |
|---|---|---|
| Initial contents | Conda, Python, Anaconda Navigator, and hundreds of popular data-science and machine-learning packages in a pre-built base environment. |
Conda, Python, and their dependencies; you add the packages you need. |
| Disk footprint | Larger, because many packages are installed initially. | Smaller starting installation. |
| Graphical interface | Includes Anaconda Navigator. | Does not provide the same pre-populated Distribution installation. |
| Best fit | Beginners who want a working data-science stack immediately. | Experienced command-line users who prefer to build a minimal environment. |
| Package control | Many packages are present before you begin; you can still create separate environments. | You explicitly choose the packages for each project. |
Use Distribution when you want a broad prebuilt environment and a graphical entry point with little package selection at the start. Use Miniconda when download size, disk usage, and explicit package control matter more, or when you already know which command-line packages each project requires. The commands below install Anaconda Distribution, not Miniconda. You can switch to Miniconda later, but do not run both installers into the same directory.
Step 1: download the correct Linux installer
Download the script in your home directory. For x86_64 Ubuntu, run:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemscurl -O https://repo.anaconda.com/archive/Anaconda3-2026.07-1-Linux-x86_64.sh
For 64-bit ARM (aarch64), run:
curl -O https://repo.anaconda.com/archive/Anaconda3-2026.07-1-Linux-aarch64.sh
The Anaconda Linux installer page also provides equivalent wget commands if you prefer wget to curl. The important parts are the exact release, the Linux platform marker, and the architecture suffix. A shell script ending in x86_64.sh is not interchangeable with one ending in aarch64.sh.
These filenames identify a particular Anaconda release. Installer names change when Anaconda publishes a newer release, so check the current Linux installer listing before copying a command for a later installation. Replace the versioned filename only with the exact filename shown there; do not guess a version or architecture suffix. If you download into another directory, remember that path for the verification and installation steps.
Keep the downloaded script in a location you can identify, such as your home directory. Avoid saving it over an older installer with a different architecture: retaining distinct, versioned filenames makes it easier to compare the correct checksum and to remove an unused script later.
Step 2: verify the installer (recommended)
A SHA-256 check helps detect a corrupted or altered download before you execute it. Run the command matching your file:
sha256sum Anaconda3-2026.07-1-Linux-x86_64.sh
For ARM64, substitute Anaconda3-2026.07-1-Linux-aarch64.sh. If the script is not in the current directory, include its path, for example sha256sum ~/Downloads/Anaconda3-2026.07-1-Linux-x86_64.sh. Compare the printed hash character-for-character with the official SHA-256 value published for that exact installer in Anaconda’s archive.

- A matching value means the file you calculated is identical to the published file hash.
- A mismatch means you should not run the script. Download it again, make sure you are checking the intended filename, and compare again.
- Never compare a hash from one release or architecture with a different installer.
The checksum does not tell you whether your Ubuntu release is supported; it only checks the downloaded file against Anaconda’s published file. Perform both checks before installation.
Step 3: run the interactive installer
Start the script with bash. Use the command that matches your architecture.
bash ~/Anaconda3-2026.07-1-Linux-x86_64.sh
For ARM64:
bash ~/Anaconda3-2026.07-1-Linux-aarch64.sh
If you downloaded the script somewhere else, provide that full path. The installer then proceeds through these prompts:

/home/<USER>/anaconda3, represented by~/anaconda3for the current account. Press Enter to accept it, or type another directory that you own and have enough space for. Avoid selecting a directory already containing another Anaconda or Miniconda installation. - Allow shell initialization. When asked whether the installer should initialize conda, answer
yes. This adds the appropriate conda setup to your shell startup configuration so that thecondacommand is available in new sessions.
A local-user installation is preferable for most Ubuntu desktops and workstations because it does not require administrator permissions and does not change files belonging to other users. Avoid running the installer with sudo unless you have a specific, managed multi-user deployment plan. A root-owned installation often causes later permission errors when conda tries to create environments or update package metadata.
If you choose a nondefault path, write it down. The same path is needed to launch the uninstaller and to diagnose a missing conda command later. The installer can create the selected directory, but the parent location must be writable by your account and have sufficient free space.
Step 4: reload your shell and confirm conda works
The installer changes a startup file, but the current terminal may not have read it yet. Reload the file for the shell you use:
- Bash:
source ~/.bashrc - Zsh:
source ~/.zshrc - Fish:
exec fish
Closing and reopening Terminal has the same effect. A successful initialization normally places (base) at the beginning of your prompt, indicating that Anaconda’s base environment is active. The marker is a prompt indicator, not a separate Ubuntu installation.

anaconda-navigator
Navigator and other GUI components may require additional Debian libraries for Mesa, X11, audio, and related desktop services. Install the libraries listed by Anaconda’s current Linux guide only when Navigator reports a missing shared library; a headless server generally does not need those graphical dependencies. Running Navigator from Terminal is useful during troubleshooting because missing-library messages remain visible there.
Step 5: create a separate project environment
The base environment is useful for managing conda, but project dependencies are easier to maintain when each project has its own environment. Create one with:
conda create --name analysis python
Approve the package plan, then activate it:
conda activate analysis
Your prompt changes from (base) to (analysis). Install project packages with conda inside that environment, and leave the environment with:
conda deactivate
Environment isolation prevents one project’s package changes from unexpectedly altering another project’s interpreter. To see environments later, run:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →conda env list
Keep the environment name descriptive and use a separate environment for unrelated projects when their package requirements differ. Before removing Anaconda, export environments that you may need to recreate, as shown in the removal section.
What to do if the installation fails
The installer says the system is unsupported
Check getconf GNU_LIBC_VERSION and uname -m again. A glibc version below 2.28 or an unsupported architecture explains many early failures. Upgrade Ubuntu or obtain the installer that matches the machine’s architecture; do not bypass the glibc requirement by copying libraries from another system.
conda: command not found after installation
- Confirm that the installation completed in the directory you selected, commonly
~/anaconda3. - Run the shell-specific reload command:
source ~/.bashrc,source ~/.zshrc, orexec fish. - Open a new terminal and run
command -v conda. - If initialization was declined, run the installed conda executable’s initialization command for your shell, then reload the startup file. The exact shell matters, so do not add Bash syntax to a Zsh or Fish configuration.
If you installed into a custom directory, make sure the startup configuration refers to that directory rather than the default ~/anaconda3. Also check that you are testing as the same user who performed the local installation.
(base) does not appear
The prompt marker is a convenience, not the only test. Run conda list and conda info. If those commands work, conda is installed even if automatic base activation is disabled. You can activate it explicitly with conda activate base.

The hash does not match
Delete the suspect script, download the exact architecture-specific file again, and calculate its hash once more. Check that the official value corresponds to the same release and filename. Do not execute a file whose hash remains different.
The installer cannot write to the destination
Choose a directory inside your home folder, such as ~/anaconda3, and ensure the filesystem has at least 5 GB free. A local-user install avoids most permission errors. If an earlier partial installation occupies the directory, choose a new empty path or remove the incomplete installation after preserving any environments you need. Do not solve a user-directory permission problem by recursively changing ownership of unrelated system files.
Navigator opens and immediately fails
Run anaconda-navigator from Terminal so the error remains visible. Missing desktop libraries are usually reported by name; install the corresponding libraries from Anaconda’s current Ubuntu/Linux GUI instructions, then retry. On a remote or headless machine, use conda from the shell instead of installing a graphical stack solely for Navigator.

The download command cannot be found
Use the equivalent downloader shown on Anaconda’s installer page if curl is unavailable. Whichever downloader you use, verify that the resulting filename and architecture suffix match your machine before calculating the SHA-256 value.
Licensing and organizational use
Anaconda’s current Terms of Service distinguish individual use, eligible academic and nonprofit or research use, and commercial use. The stated free-use category for for-profit organizations generally covers organizations with 200 or fewer employees or contractors; larger organizations generally need a Business Plan unless a stated exception applies.
That threshold is about the organization and its use, not about whether Ubuntu is free or whether the installer costs money to download. Review the current Terms of Service for your employer, client, classroom, or laboratory before deploying Anaconda to a business-wide fleet. If the terms do not fit your situation, obtain the required plan or choose a distribution whose licensing meets your organization’s policy. A personal installation on a work computer can still be subject to the organization’s licensing and procurement rules.
How to remove Anaconda cleanly
Before removal, export any environments you may need to recreate:
conda env export --name analysis > analysis.yaml
Replace analysis with each environment you want to preserve. The YAML file records the environment specification for later recreation. Store the YAML files outside the Anaconda directory, such as in a project or backup location.
Recommended Free Tools
- Deactivate the active environment, including
baseif necessary:conda deactivate. - Run the uninstaller from the default installation directory:
~/anaconda3/uninstall.sh. If you chose another location, use that directory’suninstall.sh. - The uninstaller’s advanced options can remove caches, configuration files, and user data. Select those options only after confirming that you no longer need them.
- Remove conda’s shell hooks with
conda init --reverse --allwhen the conda command is still available, or remove the initialization block from the affected shell startup file according to Anaconda’s removal guidance. - Close and reopen Terminal. The
(base)marker should no longer return, andcommand -v condashould no longer resolve to the removed installation.
Keep exported YAML files outside the Anaconda directory if you plan to reinstall; otherwise the uninstaller may remove them with the installation data. If you installed more than one conda distribution, remove only the initialization block and directory belonging to the installation you intend to uninstall.
Frequently asked questions
Does this install Python separately from Anaconda?
No. Anaconda Distribution installs its own Python interpreter inside the conda installation and environments. Use the interpreter from the active conda environment rather than assuming it is the same interpreter managed by Ubuntu’s system packages.
Can I install Anaconda without administrator access?
Yes. The recommended local-user path under your home directory is designed for that case. A system-wide deployment is a separate administrative task with different ownership and policy requirements.
Which installer should I use on Ubuntu 20.04?
Use the current Linux installer whose architecture matches uname -m. Ubuntu 20.04 is among the listed supported systems, but still verify that glibc is at least 2.28 and that the current release has not changed its support requirements.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →How much disk space does Anaconda need?
Anaconda lists 5 GB as the minimum space to download and install Distribution. Reserve more for additional environments, package caches, notebooks, and datasets.
What does “50M+ users worldwide” mean?
Anaconda displays that figure on its current download page as a company-reported user count. It is not an independent measurement and does not change the installation steps or system requirements.
Best Value
Should I accept the default installation directory?
For a single-user Ubuntu system, usually yes: ~/anaconda3 avoids administrator permissions and keeps the files under your home directory. Choose another path only when you own it, have enough space, and can remember the location for shell setup and removal.
Do I need Navigator on a server?
No. Navigator is optional. A headless or remote server can use conda entirely from the shell and generally does not need the Mesa, X11, and audio libraries used by graphical components.
What should I do when a newer installer replaces the filename in this guide?
Return to Anaconda’s current Linux installer listing, select the file for your architecture, and use that exact versioned filename for downloading, hashing, and running the script. Do not assume that an old version number remains current.
How do I know whether conda initialized correctly?
Reload the appropriate startup file, look for (base), run conda list, and check command -v conda. These checks confirm both shell activation and the executable’s location.
Frequently Asked Questions
What architecture of Anaconda should I download for Ubuntu?
Run uname -m. Download the x86_64 installer for an x86_64 result and the aarch64 installer for an aarch64 result.
How much free space is required?
Anaconda lists at least 5 GB for downloading and installing Distribution. Keep additional space available for environments, caches, and data.

Can I use Anaconda without sudo?
Yes. Install to the recommended directory under your home folder, such as ~/anaconda3, for a local-user installation.
How do I uninstall Anaconda?
Export environments first, deactivate them, run the installation’s uninstall.sh, reverse shell initialization with conda init --reverse --all when available, and reopen the terminal.
The Bottom Line
Check architecture, Ubuntu/glibc compatibility, and disk space first; download the exact current x86_64 or aarch64 installer, verify its SHA-256 hash, install it as your user, initialize the correct shell, and confirm with conda list. Use separate environments for projects, review Anaconda’s current organizational Terms of Service, and export environments before uninstalling.
