One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchThe reliable way to install Ajenti on a current Linux VPS is to use its virtual-environment installer, then restart the service and connect over HTTPS on port 8000. This is especially important on Debian 12 and later and Ubuntu 24.04 and later, where the older system-wide pip installer can stop with Python’s externally managed environment error.
Need a server to try this on? Antihost offers Linux VPS plans with NVMe storage, full root access and a 14-day free trial.
Check the distribution first, take a VPS snapshot, and make sure you have root or sudo access. Ajenti documents support for Debian 9 or later, Ubuntu Bionic (18.04) or later, and RHEL 8 or later. Other distributions may need a manual installation and their own dependency work.

What you need before installing Ajenti
Ajenti is a modular Linux and BSD server administration panel. It runs as a service on your VPS and exposes a browser interface rather than replacing SSH. Keep SSH available while installing so that you have a recovery path if the panel does not start.

cat /etc/os-release
You also need a public or reachable server address, permission to install packages, and a firewall policy that allows you to reach TCP 8000 from an administrator workstation. Do not expose the panel broadly while it still uses its bootstrap login.
Make sure the package manager can reach the configured repositories and that the VPS has enough free disk space for Python packages and any native builds. If your provider offers cloud-init or an image reset feature, note how it works before changing the server. These details make it easier to recover if a dependency installation is interrupted.

A VPS snapshot gives you a rollback point before Python packages and a service unit are added. Record the server IP, your SSH account, and the system root password. The documented first login uses the username root and the system’s root password, so verify that you know that password before closing your SSH session.
Plan the network path before installation. You may temporarily allow port 8000 from your own address, test the panel, and then tighten the rule. The provider firewall and the operating-system firewall are separate controls; a rule in only one of them may still leave the browser unable to connect.
Choose the installation method
There are three practical paths. The virtual-environment script is the recommended choice for modern Debian and Ubuntu. The legacy script installs at the operating-system level and is retained for older, compatible environments. Manual installation gives you control over dependencies and plugin scope, but requires more maintenance.
| Method | Python package isolation | PEP 668 compatibility | Dependency and plugin control | Service setup | Rollback considerations |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Virtual-environment installer | Ajenti packages are placed in an isolated installation environment | Preferred for Debian 12+ and Ubuntu 24.04+ | Installer-oriented; add or manage plugins after installation | Creates the Ajenti service used by systemctl |
Restore a VPS snapshot or remove the installed service and files deliberately |
| Legacy automatic installer | System-level Python installation | Can fail on newer Debian and Ubuntu | Installer-oriented | Creates the Ajenti service | More difficult to unwind when system Python packages are changed |
| Manual Debian/Ubuntu installation | Use a virtual environment on current releases; system pip is an older option | Do not force system pip with --break-system-packages |
Choose a minimal or broader plugin set | Service configuration is part of the installation work | Snapshot first and keep a record of installed packages |
| Manual RHEL installation | Depends on how pip is configured on the target release | Follow the target distribution’s Python packaging policy | Choose the panel and desired plugins | Use the Ajenti service after installation | Keep the dependency list and snapshot for recovery |
For most administrators, the isolated installer is the least surprising option: it matches current Python packaging rules and gives the service its own interpreter and dependencies. Manual installation is most useful when you need a deliberately small plugin footprint or must integrate Ajenti into an existing configuration-management process. The legacy script should be treated as a compatibility option, not as a faster version of the modern method.

Recommended installation: Ajenti in a virtual environment
Use this method on a supported VPS, particularly Debian 12 or later and Ubuntu 24.04 or later. It avoids the system-wide pip operation that newer distributions protect with the externally managed environment rule.
1. Run the official virtual-environment installer
From an SSH shell, run the command exactly as shown:
curl https://raw.githubusercontent.com/ajenti/ajenti/master/scripts/install-venv.sh | sudo bash -s -
The script is fetched from Ajenti’s repository and executed with root privileges through sudo. Watch the output for package errors or a failed service setup. Do not disconnect until the command has completed.
If the command stops partway through, save the final error text before retrying. A second run can obscure the original dependency or permission problem. Check that curl reached the repository and that the VPS package manager completed successfully. When the installer reports success, continue with service checks rather than assuming that a reachable browser automatically means the daemon is healthy.

sudo systemctl status ajenti
If the service is installed but not currently running, start or restart it:
sudo systemctl restart ajenti
The documented alternatives are service ajenti restart and /etc/init.d/ajenti restart. Use one service-management style consistently; systemctl is the clearest choice on current systemd-based VPS images.
3. Connect to the panel
Open the following address, replacing the placeholder with the VPS address:
https://SERVER_IP:8000
Ajenti’s panel is available on HTTPS port 8000 by default. The first browser connection may require you to acknowledge the certificate presented by the newly installed service. The documented bootstrap credentials are username root and the system root password.
Use the IP address first if DNS is not yet configured. If you later use a hostname, pass that hostname to the SSL-generation command when regenerating the certificate. A certificate warning on the first connection does not by itself prove that the service failed; verify the URL, port and service status separately.
4. Restrict the exposure before regular use
Allow TCP 8000 only from trusted administrator IP addresses in both the VPS provider’s network firewall and the operating system firewall. If you must administer the panel from changing networks, use a VPN or an SSH tunnel rather than opening the port to the entire internet.
Do not enable autologin on a public system. Ajenti’s runtime documentation identifies public autologin as a security issue. Use a strong, unique administrative password, close the browser session when finished, and keep SSH as a separate emergency channel.
Why Ubuntu 24.04 and Debian 12 reject the old installer
Recent Debian and Ubuntu releases apply Python’s externally managed environment policy. When a package installer attempts to write directly into the distribution-managed Python environment, pip can refuse with an externally-managed-environment message. An Ajenti issue documents this failure on Ubuntu 24.04 when the older installer is used.
The fix is not to override the protection with --break-system-packages. Re-run the virtual-environment command instead:
curl https://raw.githubusercontent.com/ajenti/ajenti/master/scripts/install-venv.sh | sudo bash -s -
Keeping Ajenti’s Python dependencies isolated reduces the chance that a later operating-system update will overwrite or conflict with panel packages. It also gives you a cleaner recovery boundary than modifying the system interpreter.
Legacy automatic installer for compatible systems
Ajenti still documents an older automatic script:
curl https://raw.githubusercontent.com/ajenti/ajenti/master/scripts/install.sh | sudo bash -s -
This path installs at the operating-system level. The documentation warns that it does not work under newer Debian and Ubuntu releases and is no longer recommended there. Use it only when you have confirmed that the target distribution and its Python packaging behavior are compatible with a system-wide pip installation.

Before using the legacy path, create a snapshot and verify the exact distribution version. If pip reports an externally managed environment, stop repeating the command; switch to the virtual-environment installer rather than forcing system package writes.
Manual installation on Debian or Ubuntu
Manual installation is useful when you need to select a plugin scope or when the automatic script cannot complete. On modern releases, perform the pip work inside an isolated virtual environment. The commands below show the documented native dependencies and package names; the environment isolation decision is important on current distributions.
1. Enable Ubuntu Universe
On Ubuntu, enable the Universe repository before installing the dependencies:
sudo add-apt-repository universe
Debian users should use the repositories configured for their release and confirm that the requested packages are available before proceeding.
2. Install native build and runtime dependencies
sudo apt-get install build-essential python3-pip python3-dev python3-lxml libssl-dev python3-dbus python3-augeas python3-apt ntpdate
build-essential and python3-dev provide the tooling needed when a Python dependency must be built. The remaining packages supply XML, SSL, D-Bus, Augeas, APT and time-synchronisation integration used by the panel and its plugins.
3. Update packaging tools inside the chosen environment
The older manual instructions use:
sudo pip3 install setuptools pip wheel -U
On a current Debian or Ubuntu host, do not direct this command at the system interpreter. Create and activate a virtual environment first, then run the upgrade without sudo inside that environment. This preserves the operating system’s ownership of its Python installation.
4. Install the panel and a minimal plugin set
The documented minimal set is:
sudo pip3 install ajenti-panel ajenti.plugin.core ajenti.plugin.dashboard ajenti.plugin.settings ajenti.plugin.plugins
Again, adapt the pip invocation to the isolated environment on modern distributions. This set provides the panel, core functions, dashboard, settings and plugin management. The official guide also lists an all-plugins installation for administrators who need broader integration; choose only the plugins you intend to operate because every additional integration adds dependencies and configuration surface.
A minimal set is easier to audit and troubleshoot. Add broader plugins only after the base panel is reachable, and record which packages were added. If a newly added plugin causes a startup failure, you can correlate the change with the logs and restore the snapshot or remove the added package deliberately instead of rebuilding the entire VPS.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Manual installation on RHEL-compatible systems
For RHEL 8 or later, Ajenti’s documented route begins with EPEL and a set of development and runtime packages.
1. Enable EPEL
sudo dnf install epel-release
2. Install the documented dependencies
sudo dnf install -y gcc python3-devel python3-pip python3-pillow python3-augeas python3-dbus chrony openssl-devel redhat-lsb-core
These packages provide a compiler, Python headers and pip, image support, Augeas and D-Bus bindings, time synchronisation, OpenSSL development files and the expected RHEL identification utility.
3. Install Ajenti and the plugins you need
The guide then installs ajenti-panel and the desired plugins with pip. Keep the installation inside an environment appropriate for the RHEL release, and record the exact plugin list so that a replacement VPS can be rebuilt consistently. After installation, use the Ajenti service and connect on port 8000 as described earlier.

Starting, stopping and checking Ajenti
Restart after installation or configuration changes
sudo systemctl restart ajenti
A restart reloads the panel process and is the documented first action after installation. To stop it temporarily while diagnosing a startup failure:
sudo systemctl stop ajenti
Use status output to distinguish a running service from one that exits immediately:
sudo systemctl status ajenti
Verify the listening port
From another machine, test https://SERVER_IP:8000. A browser timeout usually indicates a cloud or host firewall rule, while an immediate connection refusal usually means that the service is not listening. Check the service status and logs before changing firewall rules.
Test from the same administrator network whose address you allowed in the firewall. This avoids mistaking a blocked third-party network for an Ajenti failure. Once the panel works, remove any temporary broad rule and leave only the addresses or VPN path your administrators actually use.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsTroubleshooting first-run failures
Empty response after login
If the login page appears but the panel returns an empty response after authentication, Ajenti’s installation guide recommends upgrading gipc and gevent in its installed Python environment:
/opt/ajenti/bin/python3 -m pip install gipc gevent -U
Restart the service after the upgrade:
sudo systemctl restart ajenti
The path matters: use Ajenti’s interpreter rather than the operating system’s unrelated python3, so the packages are installed where the panel runs.
HTTPS certificate is missing
Generate Ajenti’s SSL material with the documented command, passing the server hostname:
/opt/ajenti/bin/python3 /opt/ajenti/bin/ajenti-ssl-gen $(hostname)
Restart Ajenti and retry the HTTPS URL after the command completes:

Service will not start
Start with the service log rather than repeatedly rerunning the installer:
sudo tail -n 100 /var/log/ajenti/ajenti.log
Ajenti also records crash logs under /var/log/ajenti/, using names such as crash-DATE.log. List that directory and inspect the newest crash file for the first Python traceback or missing-library message.
For foreground diagnostics, stop the service and run the panel in verbose mode:
Best Value
sudo systemctl stop ajenti
/usr/local/bin/ajenti-panel -v
If verbose output is not sufficient, use development mode:
/usr/local/bin/ajenti-panel --dev
Keep the terminal open while reproducing the failure. A missing module, permission error or certificate path in the output usually identifies the next corrective action. Once finished, stop the foreground process and start the service again.
Ubuntu 24.04 reports externally managed environment
This is the expected symptom when the legacy system-level installer meets the distribution’s Python policy. Do not add --break-system-packages as a shortcut. Return to the supported virtual-environment command and allow it to install Ajenti outside the system-managed interpreter.
The browser cannot connect
- Confirm the service state with
sudo systemctl status ajenti. - Confirm that you are using
https://, the correct server IP and port8000. - Check both the cloud firewall and the VPS host firewall for a rule allowing TCP 8000 from your administrator address.
- Read
/var/log/ajenti/ajenti.logif the service is active but the connection still fails.
Security checklist after installation
- Restrict TCP 8000 to trusted administrator IPs instead of allowing the whole internet.
- Do not enable autologin on a public server.
- Replace temporary or shared credentials with a strong administrative secret according to your access policy.
- Keep SSH access available for recovery and test it before changing firewall rules.
- Apply operating-system and Ajenti updates during a maintenance window, with a current VPS snapshot.
- Review the panel logs after the first login and whenever the service restarts unexpectedly.
Remember that HTTPS protects the connection in transit, but it does not make unrestricted exposure safe. The default root login has broad authority, so network restriction, careful credential handling and a tested SSH fallback are part of the installation rather than optional cleanup.
Installation decision checklist
- Run
cat /etc/os-releaseand verify that the VPS is Debian 9+, Ubuntu 18.04+ or RHEL 8+. - On Debian 12+ or Ubuntu 24.04+, choose the virtual-environment installer.
- Take a snapshot and confirm root or sudo access.
- Run the installer or complete the distribution-specific dependencies for a manual setup.
- Check and restart the
ajentiservice. - Open
https://SERVER_IP:8000and sign in with the documented bootstrap credentials. - Restrict the port, avoid public autologin and retain SSH as a fallback.
- If anything fails, inspect the Ajenti log and crash logs before changing installation paths.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which Ajenti installer should I use on Ubuntu 24.04 or Debian 12?
Use the virtual-environment installer: curl https://raw.githubusercontent.com/ajenti/ajenti/master/scripts/install-venv.sh | sudo bash -s -. It is the documented approach for these releases and avoids pip’s externally managed environment error.
How do I open Ajenti after installation?
Restart the service with sudo systemctl restart ajenti, then browse to https://SERVER_IP:8000. Port 8000 is Ajenti’s default HTTPS port.
What are the default Ajenti credentials?
The documented bootstrap username is root, and the password is the VPS system root password. Restrict port 8000 and avoid public autologin before regular use.
Why does the old installer fail with externally-managed-environment?
Newer Debian and Ubuntu releases protect the system Python environment under PEP 668. Do not use --break-system-packages; switch to the virtual-environment installer.
How do I fix an empty response after logging in?
Upgrade Ajenti’s bundled packages with /opt/ajenti/bin/python3 -m pip install gipc gevent -U, then restart the ajenti service.

The Bottom Line
On a supported VPS, install Ajenti with the virtual-environment script, restart the service, and connect at https://SERVER_IP:8000. Use the documented root credentials only as a bootstrap, restrict the port in both firewalls, keep SSH available, and use Ajenti’s log, SSL-generation and bundled-Python repair commands when first-run problems appear.
