What SteamCMD does
SteamCMD is Valve’s command-line downloader and updater for dedicated Steam game servers. Steam Support states that all Steam game servers now use SteamCMD to download and update their server files. It does not provide a graphical server console; instead, you run commands that select an installation directory, authenticate, download a specific application ID, verify files, and exit.

The SteamCMD program is separate from the game server itself. You install SteamCMD once, then use it to install one or more game servers into separate directories such as /home/steam/servers/example. Each title has its own executable, configuration files, command-line options, license requirements, and network ports.
Before you begin

CPU, memory, disk and bandwidth requirements are game-specific. Do not infer a player limit from the VPS plan alone: the game, tick rate, mods, map, simulation load and provider network all affect capacity. Check the selected title’s server documentation and monitor the running process after installation.

Install SteamCMD on Ubuntu or Debian
Perform operating-system and package tasks with your administrative account. Switch to the steam account only when you begin downloading SteamCMD and the game files.

Update the operating system
Run:
sudo apt-get update -y sudo apt-get upgrade -yReboot if the package upgrade installs a new kernel or a service that your provider indicates needs restarting.

Install the 32-bit compatibility library
On Ubuntu or Debian releases that package it under this name, run:
sudo apt-get install lib32gcc1Some newer releases use a different package name or provide the library through a multi-architecture package. If APT reports that
lib32gcc1is unavailable, search the packages for the 32-bit GCC runtime supplied by your release rather than downloading an unrelated library. The exact package name is distribution- and version-dependent. -
Create a non-root Steam account
Create the account and switch into its login environment:

sudo adduser steam sudo su - steamAnswer the account prompts, set a strong password, and keep administrative privileges on your original account. Running SteamCMD and the game process as

Download and initialize SteamCMD
Inside the
steamaccount’s home directory, create a directory, download Valve’s Linux archive, extract it, and run a harmless initialization:mkdir -p ~/steamcmd cd ~/steamcmd wget https://steamcdn-a.akamaihd.net/client/installer/steamcmd_linux.tar.gz tar xf steamcmd_linux.tar.gz ./steamcmd.sh +quitThe first launch may download or update SteamCMD’s own files. A successful
+quitrun confirms that the shell script can start and reach Steam’s service. The archive URL above is the Linux installer location; retain the archive only if you want a local copy for later redeployment.
Download a dedicated game server
Make a separate destination directory for each title. Replace APPID with the game’s documented dedicated-server application ID:
mkdir -p ~/servers/example
~/steamcmd/steamcmd.sh
+force_install_dir ~/servers/example
+login anonymous
+app_update APPID validate
+quitThese commands perform four important actions:
force_install_dirchooses the directory where the server files belong.login anonymousattempts the title’s anonymous server download method.app_update APPID validatedownloads the application and checks the installed files against Steam’s manifest.quitcloses SteamCMD after the operation completes.
A successful run normally ends with a completion message and leaves the game executable and supporting files below ~/servers/example. List the directory to identify the title’s actual executable and read its server documentation before creating a startup command.

When anonymous login is not allowed
Some games require ownership of a paid license or a normal Steam account. In that case, start SteamCMD interactively, enter the game’s required account name, supply the password at the prompt, and complete Steam Guard if an email code is requested. Avoid putting a password directly in a shell command or unit file, because it can be exposed through shell history, process listings or configuration backups. Confirm the selected game’s authentication requirements before assuming that anonymous access will work.
Open the correct VPS and Linux firewall ports
Ports are controlled by the game, not by SteamCMD. Steam Support lists local TCP and UDP port 27015 as a default dedicated/listen-server port, but individual games can use different ports or several separate ports. A game’s own server guide takes precedence.

| Voice or auxiliary services | Add each documented port and protocol; do not assume the gameplay port handles voice traffic. |
There are usually two firewalls: the VPS provider’s network firewall and the operating system firewall. A rule in only one place is insufficient. For a game that really uses the default port, UFW examples are:
sudo ufw allow 27015/tcp
sudo ufw allow 27015/udp
sudo ufw status verboseDo not copy those rules blindly. Substitute the game’s actual port table, remove unnecessary rules, and restrict administration ports by source IP where possible. A Steam Community hosting example opens separate TCP and UDP rules for its own title, illustrating why a universal Steam port list cannot replace the game-specific instructions.
Run the server with systemd
Launching a server in an SSH session is fragile: it stops when the process is terminated, and it will not automatically return after a reboot. A systemd unit provides boot startup, controlled shutdown and restart-on-failure behavior.

Create a unit file
As an administrator, create /etc/systemd/system/example-server.service:

WantedBy=multi-user.targetReplace {{SERVER_EXECUTABLE}} with the executable name documented by the game. If the title requires startup arguments, append them to the same ExecStart line. Keep the working directory at the server’s installation directory so relative paths for configs, saves and logs resolve correctly. Some games need a wrapper script; in that case, make the script executable, keep it owned by steam, and point ExecStart at that script.

Enable and verify the service
- Reload unit files:
sudo systemctl daemon-reload - Enable startup at boot and start immediately:
sudo systemctl enable --now example-server.service - Check the service state:
sudo systemctl status example-server.service - Read recent logs when diagnosing startup:
sudo journalctl -u example-server.service -e
Do not mark a service healthy merely because systemd says it is running. Confirm that the game has bound the expected port, that its log shows a completed startup, and that a remote client can find or join it.

SteamCMD uses the same app_update APPID validate operation for patching. First stop the running service if the game’s documentation requires an offline update:
sudo systemctl stop example-server.serviceSwitch to the steam account and repeat the SteamCMD invocation shown earlier, using the same installation directory and app ID. The validate option checks for missing or damaged files as it updates. When it finishes, start the service and inspect its logs:
sudo systemctl start example-server.service
sudo systemctl status example-server.serviceSchedule updates during a maintenance window if players are connected. Preserve configuration, save and mod directories before a major game update. Some titles overwrite defaults or change command-line options, so compare the game’s release notes with your unit file after patching.

- Keep the server files and data owned by
steam; avoid running ad-hoc server commands withsudo. - Back up saves, world data, configuration files, ban lists, and any custom scripts to storage outside the live server directory.
- Test restoring a backup on a separate directory or temporary VPS rather than assuming that a successful archive can be restored.
- Use SSH keys, disable password login for administrative accounts when practical, and apply operating-system security updates.
- Open only documented game ports. Keep RCON and other management interfaces private or source-restricted.
- Watch disk usage and log growth. A full filesystem can prevent both the game and SteamCMD from writing files.
- Record the app ID, installation path, executable name, startup arguments, port map, and update procedure so another administrator can recover the service.
Distribution and VPS choices
Ubuntu and Debian are convenient for this workflow because the package commands and the lib32gcc1 example are widely documented. Other distributions can work, but you must translate package installation, user-management, firewall and service commands to that distribution. CentOS-based systems, for example, may require the 32-bit glibc.i686 and libstdc++.i686 packages instead of the Debian package name.
When comparing VPS plans for a game server, evaluate the following rather than relying on a generic “gaming” label:
- Single-core and multi-core CPU performance for the game’s simulation and tick rate.
- Available memory after the operating system and monitoring services are running.
- Fast, persistent storage with enough space for binaries, updates, saves, logs and backups.
- Network latency to the intended players, transfer limits, IPv4/IPv6 support and DDoS policy.
- Whether the provider exposes both a network firewall and console access for recovery.
- Snapshot or backup options and the time required to restore them.
- Support for the Linux distribution and 32-bit compatibility libraries required by the title.
No single bandwidth, RAM or player-capacity number applies to every Steam game. Measure CPU, memory, network and disk behavior under the actual map, mod set and concurrent load you intend to host.

Operational checklist
- Confirm the distribution, supported package names and available disk space.
- Install updates and the required 32-bit runtime as an administrator.
- Create and use the non-root
steamaccount. - Download and initialize SteamCMD in
~/steamcmd. - Install the game into its own directory with the documented app ID and
validate. - Identify the correct executable, configuration path and startup arguments.
- Open only the game’s required ports in both firewall layers.
- Create, enable and test a systemd service running as
steam. - Back up saves and configuration before updates, stop the service when required, and repeat the validated app update.
- Monitor logs, resource usage, disk space and external connectivity after every installation or patch.
