- A domain name or subdomain whose DNS can point to the VPS.
- A web server, the PHP version and extensions required by your chosen SMF release, and a supported database server.
- A separate database and database user for this forum.
- Ability to transfer files into the intended document root or a forum subdirectory.
- A plan for HTTPS, operating-system updates, database backups, and recovery testing.
The exact SMF release, supported PHP and database versions, required extensions, and writable paths are not fixed forever. Historical announcements such as SMF 2.0.13 from 2017 and SMF 2.1 RC4 from 2021 do not identify the current stable release. Make a compatibility record
Write down these values before configuring the VPS:

3. Create a dedicated database and restricted account
Create an empty database for SMF and a dedicated database user. Do not reuse a database administrator account or credentials from another application.
- Choose a database name that identifies this forum without exposing sensitive information.
- Create a database user used only by this SMF installation.
- Assign that user only the privileges required by the SMF installation instructions for its database engine.
- Generate a long, unique password and store it in an encrypted password manager.
- Record the database host, port if non-default, database name, username, and password for the browser installer.
- Keep database administration access restricted to the VPS or an explicitly permitted administrative network.

Match ownership to the actual web-server account
Identify the account under which your web server and PHP handler run on your distribution. The files must be readable by that account, while only the paths explicitly identified by SMF should be writable. If you deploy files as one administrative user and serve them as another, use the manual’s ownership and permission recommendations to bridge that difference without granting unnecessary write access.
- Keep configuration and application code non-writable unless the manual explicitly requires otherwise.
- Grant write access only to the installation or cache paths SMF identifies.

Point a browser at the forum URL. If the files, web-server mapping, PHP runtime, extensions, and permissions meet the documented requirements, SMF should present its installation workflow.
- Open the exact domain or subdirectory where you placed the files.

8. Back up the forum before opening it to users
A usable backup includes both the SMF files and the database. Back up uploaded attachments, avatars, themes, and any customized files in addition to the database schema and content.
- Take an initial database backup immediately after a successful installation and record the database engine and version.
