To avoid leaks, use the fastening layout and screw specified for your exact roofing panel and the material beneath it. Drive each screw perpendicular to the panel so its sealing washer compresses evenly—snug enough to seal, but not crushed or distorted. Corrugated panels do not all take screws in the same place, so neither the crest nor the flat is a universal rule.
Find the panel’s fastening instructions first
Identify the panel profile and consult its manufacturer’s installation guide before laying out screws. The instructions for two 7/8-inch corrugated products show why this matters: S3 Metals’ guide says to fasten along each rib at each purlin, while Metal Panels Inc.’s preliminary guide illustrates screws in the flat for its specified panel. Those directions apply to different systems; do not choose a location by applying a generic crest-or-flat rule.

Use the guide to establish the fastening pattern, maximum row spacing, penetration, and any extra fastening required for wind exposure or panel laps. S3 Metals directs installers to its maximum recommended row spacing and calls for fasteners at both sides of each rib and panel laps in high-wind areas. The sources do not establish one spacing pattern for every corrugated roof; follow the applicable panel instructions and project or code requirements.
Choose screws for the panel and its support
The screw must suit both the roofing system and the substrate it enters. S3 Metals lists these examples for its guide’s system:
#1 Best Overall
- ANTI-CORROSION COATING: Featuring a corrosion-resistant ruspert coating that withstands 1000-hour salt spray testing, these durable metal roofing screws excel in extreme weather conditions while maintaining long-lasting rust protection for reliable indoor/outdoor use
- EASY TO INSTALL: The 17 type sharp pointed tip penetrates through metal and wood effortlessly without pre drilling. Aggressive high and low threads provide strong holding power to secure materials tightly
- LEAK-PROOF EPDM WASHER: Roofing screws with EPDM rubber washer compress to form a watertight seal, preventing roof leaks during heavy rain and snow. Resists moisture, chemicals, and temperature extremes
- MULTIPLE APPLICATION: These metal roof screws are ideal for metal roof panels, corrugated roofing, tin sheds, pole barns, and DIY siding projects. The metal thickness should not exceed 2 mm
- PACKAGE: 300 PCS #10 x 1-1/2 Inch metal roofing screws with 5/16 Inch hex head, 1 PC 5/16 Inch upgraded magnetic hex socket. LIONMAX roofing screws come with a handy plastic box for convenient storage
- Dimensional lumber: #10 woodfast screws.
- Plywood or OSB: #14 woodfast screws.
- Metal purlins: Tek screws.
These are not universal specifications. Use the manufacturer’s required fastener and screw length for the actual panel and support, including its required penetration or engagement. The S3 Metals guide gives different minimum penetration examples for plywood/OSB and dimensional lumber, so do not transfer one example to another substrate. Its guidance also specifies EPDM sealing washers for roof and wall fasteners.
Drive each screw square and seat the washer evenly
- Position it at the location shown in the panel guide. Keep the screw aligned with the specified support and fastening pattern.
- Hold the driver perpendicular to the panel. Metal Panels Inc.’s technical guidance recommends keeping the fastener square to the surface.
- Drive until the washer seals without being damaged. Too little compression can leave a poor seal; over-driving can split, roll out, or crush the washer and deform or dimple the panel. A dimple can collect water and contribute to leakage, according to Metal Panels Inc.’s preliminary guide.
- Clear drill shavings before the washer seats. Metal Panels Inc. says to remove metal drill particles from beneath the washer so they do not interfere with seating.
A depth-sensing or torque-controlled screw gun can help control seating, but the right tool and setting depend on the fastener, hole, material, and panel system. S3 Metals recommends a 2,000-rpm depth-sensing nose-piece screw gun in its installation guidance; Metal Panels Inc. recommends torque control appropriate to the fastener and material. Neither instruction establishes one setting for all tools or roofs.

Prepare the roof and handle panel laps as directed
Install approved roofing underlayment as required by local code and the panel instructions. Where possible, S3 Metals advises lapping panels away from the prevailing wind. Its guide also calls for stitch screws on panel laps at a maximum of 12 inches on center and daily cleanup of metal drill particles to limit rust staining. Apply these details only when working to that guide’s system and confirm the requirements for your own panels.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesLap overlap and sealant can depend on roof pitch. Metal Panels Inc.’s preliminary 7/8-inch corrugated guide specifies one corrugation of overlap with butyl tape when the pitch is greater than 3:12, and two corrugations below 3:12. The same product-specific guide warns against installing that panel below 1:12 because heavy rainfall may pool and lead to leaks. These are instructions and a limit for that cited panel, not general rules for every metal roof.

What to do if a screw misses its support
Do not leave a loose fastener where it missed a purlin. Metal Panels Inc.’s guide warns against this and provides a repair instruction for its specified system. Follow the applicable manufacturer’s repair method; the available guidance does not support treating caulk as a universal fix for a misplaced screw.
If an existing roof is leaking, these installation instructions alone cannot identify the cause or establish a suitable repair. The panel profile, substrate, roof pitch, leak location, and governing product instructions all matter.
