The distribution package is easiest to maintain; a versioned .deb or .rpm gives you tighter control when a project requires a particular R release.
Need a server to try this on? Antihost offers Linux VPS plans with NVMe storage, full root access and a 14-day free trial.
You need root access or a working sudo configuration to install system packages. After installing R, verify the executable and PATH, then install the compiler and system libraries required by the R packages you actually use. R itself has no universal published VPS minimum for RAM, CPU, or disk, so size the server for your workload rather than relying on an arbitrary baseline.

Choose the installation method before running commands
There are two sensible installation paths on a Linux VPS:
- Distribution-managed R: Ubuntu, Debian, RHEL, and compatible repositories supply an R package. This is the simplest option when the repository version meets your application’s requirements.
- Posit’s versioned package: Posit publishes manually installable
.deband.rpmfiles for specific Linux releases and CPU architectures. Use this route when you must select an exact R version or keep several R versions isolated.
Do not mix repositories or package files built for another release. A package for Ubuntu 24.04 is not a general Ubuntu package, and an x86_64 build is not interchangeable with an ARM64 build.

Check the VPS operating system, architecture, and access
Log in over SSH and collect the facts that determine which package path is valid. Run:
cat /etc/os-release
dpkg --print-architecture 2>/dev/null || true
arch
free -h
df -h /
id -u
sudo -v
/etc/os-release identifies the distribution and release. On Debian- and Ubuntu-family systems, dpkg --print-architecture normally reports an architecture such as amd64 or arm64. On RPM-based systems, arch commonly returns x86_64 or aarch64. The memory and disk commands do not establish a required specification; they show whether your planned workload fits the VPS you already have.

Posit’s current Linux package documentation lists Ubuntu 22.04, 24.04, and 26.04; Debian 13; RHEL 8, 9, and 10; and openSUSE 15.6. Where builds are available, it publishes both x86_64/amd64 and aarch64/arm64 packages. ARM availability is narrower than x86-64, so confirm that your exact release and architecture appears in the package list before choosing a versioned install.
Vendor support dates are not the same as operating-system end-of-life dates. Posit lists platform support through 30 April 2027 for Ubuntu 22.04 LTS and through 30 June 2028 for Debian 13. Treat those dates as the vendor’s support horizon for its platform packages, not as a promise that the operating system receives updates until that date.
Option 1: install the distribution package on Ubuntu or Debian
Use this option when the R version provided by your configured repositories is acceptable and you prefer normal operating-system updates.

Refresh package metadata:
sudo apt-get update -
Install the base R package:
sudo apt-get install -y r-base -
Confirm which version was installed:
R --version
The exact R release comes from the repositories enabled for that VPS. Before a production installation, inspect the candidate package if you need to know what APT will select:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
apt-cache policy r-base
This route normally places the executable where the distribution expects it and lets APT handle upgrades and dependencies. Its trade-off is version timing: a stable distribution may retain an older R release for consistency, while your project may require a newer one. If the candidate version is too old, do not add a repository for a different Ubuntu or Debian release. Use the controlled version method instead.
Option 2: install a specific R version with Posit’s Debian package
Use a versioned package when reproducibility, compatibility, or an application requirement makes the repository’s default version unsuitable. The package path must match both the operating-system release and architecture.
The documented pattern for Ubuntu 24.04 is:
export R_VERSION=4.x.y
curl -O https://cdn.posit.co/r/ubuntu-2404/pkgs/r-${R_VERSION}_1_$(dpkg --print-architecture).deb
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install ./r-${R_VERSION}_1_$(dpkg --print-architecture).deb
4.x.y is deliberately a placeholder, not a version to copy into production. Select a currently published version from Posit’s package index, and replace ubuntu-2404 with the path documented for your actual Ubuntu release. Use the Debian 13 package path on Debian 13 rather than an Ubuntu package. The architecture expression inserts the local Debian architecture, so it also prevents accidentally downloading an amd64 file on an arm64 VPS.
Installing a local .deb with APT allows APT to resolve dependencies from your enabled repositories. If APT reports an unmet dependency, check that the release repositories are enabled and that the package was built for that release; do not satisfy the error by combining unrelated distribution repositories.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsInstall R on RHEL and compatible RPM systems
For RHEL and compatible distributions, download the RPM matching the VPS release and architecture, then install it with dnf. For a RHEL 9 example:
export R_VERSION=4.x.y
curl -O https://cdn.posit.co/r/rhel-9/pkgs/R-${R_VERSION}-1-1.$(arch).rpm
sudo dnf install R-${R_VERSION}-1-1.$(arch).rpm
Change rhel-9 to the documented path for RHEL 8 or RHEL 10 when appropriate. Keep the version placeholder until you have selected a currently published build. Posit documents additional repository prerequisites for some RHEL releases, including EPEL and CodeReady Builder. Enable only the prerequisites required by the release instructions for your system; a missing repository can look like a package or dependency failure even when the RPM itself is correct.
After installation, run R --version. If the command is not found, continue with the versioned-binary and PATH checks below rather than installing a second copy immediately.
Verify the binary and make the selected version available
A versioned installation may store R under /opt/R. Posit documents checking the binary directly:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →/opt/R/${R_VERSION}/bin/R --version
If this is your first versioned installation and you want that release to be the default for ordinary shell sessions, create links in a directory that is normally on the system PATH:
sudo ln -s /opt/${R_VERSION}/bin/R /usr/local/bin/R
sudo ln -s /opt/${R_VERSION}/bin/Rscript /usr/local/bin/Rscript
Use the exact installation path reported by the package documentation. If a link already exists, inspect it before replacing it:
command -v R
readlink -f "$(command -v R)"
ls -l /usr/local/bin/R /usr/local/bin/Rscript 2>/dev/null || true
When multiple releases are installed, avoid silently overwriting the active link. Keep each release isolated under its versioned directory and change the links, shell profile, service definition, or job configuration deliberately.
Run a small smoke test that reports the R version and session details:
R -q -e 'sessionInfo()'
Rscript -e 'cat(R.version.string, "n")'
These commands confirm that both interactive R and Rscript resolve and can start. They do not test your application’s packages, database connectivity, or long-running jobs.
Install compilers and system libraries for R packages
Installing R is separate from preparing the server to build R packages. Many packages contain native C, C++, or Fortran code, or link to external libraries such as database clients, image codecs, XML libraries, SSL implementations, or document tools. If those headers, libraries, or compilers are absent, installation can fail even though R itself works.
Start with the package’s declared SystemRequirements and map each requirement to your VPS distribution. Posit’s system-requirements catalog is intended for this mapping. For Debian or Ubuntu development systems, Posit Support documents the following broad starting point:
Rank #4
sudo apt-get install r-base-dev texlive-full
texlive-full is a large collection. Install it only when your reporting or package workflow genuinely needs the full TeX toolchain; otherwise install the narrower TeX components named by your package or document build. The same principle applies to database client development packages and other -dev libraries: install what the selected packages require instead of copying a blanket list onto every VPS.
On an RPM system, use the development tools and library packages named by the package requirements, selected through dnf. Package names differ between distributions, so a Debian package name cannot be copied directly to RHEL.
Where it is available, Posit Package Manager can provide portable Linux binaries that bundle system dependencies for supported packages. That can reduce compilation work, but it is a separate product with its own deployment requirements; figures published for its non-production trials—2 CPU cores, 4 GB of RAM, and 100 GB of disk—describe Package Manager, not a minimum specification for R itself.
How much VPS capacity does R need?
No universal standalone-R minimum for CPU, memory, or disk is established in the cited installation material. R is an interpreter and runtime; the appropriate capacity depends on what runs inside it.
- Small scripts or scheduled reports: prioritize enough memory for the largest data object plus the operating system and concurrent services.
- Interactive analysis: account for the size of data loaded into memory, temporary copies created by transformations, and the number of simultaneous users.
- Compiling packages: reserve CPU, memory, and disk for compilers, headers, downloaded source archives, and build directories.
- Web APIs, Shiny-style applications, or workers: size for concurrent processes and peak requests rather than the idle footprint of the R executable.
Measure your workload and monitor memory, swap, CPU, and disk after deployment. Do not treat the Package Manager trial figures as an R requirement, and do not infer a universal server size from a single application.
Root access, users, and project isolation
System-wide installation requires root privileges because package managers write to protected directories and register files with the operating system. A user with sudo can perform the same installation without logging in directly as root:
sudo -v
If that command fails, ask the VPS administrator to install R or grant the narrowly scoped administrative access required by your policy. A personal, user-local R build is possible in some environments, but it is outside the distribution-package workflow and leaves you responsible for compiling, choosing an installation prefix, and maintaining all dependencies.
Best Value
Install shared R versions centrally, then keep project libraries separate where practical. Record the active R version and package set in each project’s deployment configuration or lockfile. This prevents an operating-system update or a change to the default R symlink from unexpectedly changing a production job.

APT cannot find r-base
- Recheck
/etc/os-releaseto confirm that the machine is actually Ubuntu or Debian. - Run
sudo apt-get updateand read the repository errors rather than ignoring them. - Confirm that the normal repositories for the current release are enabled.
- Do not mix repositories for different Ubuntu or Debian releases. If the repository version is unsuitable, use the matching versioned package instead.
The wrong R version appears
Run R --version, then inspect the executable selected by the shell:
command -v R
readlink -f "$(command -v R)"
echo "$PATH"
A stale /usr/local/bin/R symlink or an earlier directory in PATH can take precedence over the version you just installed. For multiple versions, retain the versioned binaries under /opt/R and update the chosen link or service configuration intentionally.
An R package exits with a non-zero status
Read the first missing header, library, compiler, or command in the build log. Then consult the package’s SystemRequirements and install the matching compiler, -dev library, or database client development package. Retrying the same R command without changing the system dependency will not fix a compile failure.
The VPS uses ARM
Confirm both the release and architecture with the inspection commands. Check that Posit publishes a package for that exact combination. Its ARM list is narrower than its x86-64 list; if no matching build exists, use the distribution package when available or choose a supported image rather than forcing an x86-64 package onto ARM.
The versioned binary works, but R is not found
Run the full path under /opt/R first. If it starts, the installation is present and the issue is shell resolution. Inspect PATH, create the documented /usr/local/bin links, and start a new shell or reload the profile before testing again.
Plan upgrades without breaking projects
For production, treat an R upgrade as a compatibility change rather than an ordinary package refresh. Pin or stage the new release, install it alongside the current one when possible, and test the project’s packages before changing the active binary. Retain project lockfiles and deployment configuration so that package versions can be recreated.
When a service, cron job, or container invokes R, verify which binary that execution context uses. A shell configured with a new PATH does not automatically change a systemd unit, cron environment, or wrapper script. Switch the active version only after those entry points and the application’s package library have been tested.
R and Posit Workbench compatibility
If the VPS will later host Posit Workbench, its documented platform matrix supports Ubuntu Linux 22, 24, and 26; Debian Linux 13; RHEL 8, 9, and 10; and SUSE Linux 15 SP7 or openSUSE 15.6 on x86-64, with narrower ARM support. Workbench requires R 3.6.0 or newer. Installing R alone does not install Workbench, configure users, or provide a supported Workbench deployment; those are separate administrative steps.
A practical pre-production checklist
- Distribution and release recorded from
/etc/os-release. - Architecture recorded from
dpkg --print-architectureorarch. - Available memory and root-disk space checked for the intended workload.
sudoor equivalent root access confirmed.- Installation method chosen: repository package for simplicity or versioned package for exact control.
- Package path and architecture match the VPS exactly.
R --versionandRscriptsmoke tests succeed.- Every application package’s system requirements mapped to installed libraries and compilers.
- Project package versions recorded in a lockfile or deployment specification.
- Upgrade and rollback steps tested before replacing the active production binary.
Bottom line: the right install depends on version control
For most Ubuntu or Debian VPSs, start with sudo apt-get update followed by sudo apt-get install -y r-base, then verify the version. Choose Posit’s release-matched .deb or .rpm when an application needs a specific R version, and keep versioned binaries isolated so upgrades are reversible. In either case, package compilation is a second task: use each package’s system requirements to install only the libraries and tools your workload needs.
