Install Purpur by selecting the Minecraft version you want, installing the Java runtime that version requires, placing the matching Purpur JAR in a dedicated folder, and launching it from that folder with Java. On first launch, accept the EULA through the generated instructions, configure the server, test locally, and only then open access to other players. Purpur is a drop-in Paper replacement: it keeps Paper’s upstream features while adding configurable behavior and optional gameplay features.

What Purpur is and when it is the right choice
Purpur is a Minecraft server implementation built as a drop-in replacement for Paper. Its purpose is to expose more configuration and add optional gameplay features while retaining Paper compatibility. If you leave purpur.yml unchanged, Purpur’s own FAQ says running the JAR is no different from running Paper.

The important difference is that Purpur-specific settings become available when you need them.
Check these requirements before downloading
- A fixed Minecraft version: choose the release your players and plugins will use before selecting a Purpur build. A server JAR and client on different protocol versions generally cannot connect reliably.
- The matching Java runtime: install the Java version required by the chosen Minecraft release, not simply the newest Java available on your computer.
- A dedicated directory: keep the JAR, worlds, logs, configuration, plugin files, and backups together in a location you can reach from a terminal.
- Enough host memory: the example command below allocates 4 GB, but that is a starting point rather than a universal requirement. Player count, world size, plugins, operating-system overhead, and other services determine the appropriate heap.
- Administrative access: you need permission to install Java, create files, open the server process through the firewall, and change router settings if players will connect over the internet.
Choose the Minecraft release and Java version together

After installing Java, verify what your terminal will use:
java -versionThe reported major version must match the Minecraft release you selected. If several Java installations are present, correct the operating system’s PATH or call the intended Java executable by its full path in your start script.

Download the matching Purpur JAR
Use the versioned download endpoint
Purpur publishes a latest-build API endpoint in this form:
https://api.purpurmc.org/v2/purpur/<version>/latest/download
Replace <version> with the exact Minecraft version you selected. The endpoint then downloads the latest Purpur build available for that Minecraft version. A versioned path is preferable to downloading an unlabelled file because your notes and update process can record which Minecraft release you intended to run.
Create a stable filename
Save the downloaded file in your server directory and rename it to purpur.jar. Keeping a stable filename means your launch script does not have to change every time you update the build. Record the original version and build in a text file, or keep the old JAR outside the active directory as a rollback reference.

Do not place the JAR in your general Downloads folder and launch it from somewhere else. The server writes relative paths for worlds, logs, and configuration; starting in the wrong directory can make it appear that files have disappeared or create a second, unintended server.
Set up the server directory
Choose a path that is easy to back up and reach from a terminal. For example, use /srv/minecraft/purpur on Linux or macOS, or C:MinecraftPurpur on Windows. Put purpur.jar there before the first launch.
A practical directory will eventually contain:
purpur.jar, the active server executable.server.properties, the standard server settings.purpur.ymland other generated configuration files, where applicable.- World directories, logs, operator and whitelist files, and the
pluginsdirectory. - A separate backup location containing copies made while the server is stopped.
Keep backups outside the live world directory. A backup stored beside the files it is meant to protect can be lost in the same disk failure or accidental deletion.
Start Purpur from the command line
Linux or macOS
- Open a terminal.
- Change to the directory containing the JAR:
cd /srv/minecraft/purpur. - Start the server:
java -Xms4G -Xmx4G -jar purpur.jar --noguiWindows
- Open Command Prompt or PowerShell.
- Change to the server directory:
cd /d C:MinecraftPurpurin Command Prompt. - Run the same Java command:
java -Xms4G -Xmx4G -jar purpur.jar --noguiUnderstand each launch option

Once the command works, place it in a Windows .bat file or a macOS/Linux shell script. Always launch that script from the server directory, and keep the working command documented so an update does not accidentally change memory or file paths.

On its first run, Purpur creates the initial directory structure and configuration files. The process will stop or instruct you to stop until the EULA requirement has been handled. Read the generated EULA file and follow its instructions; do not set acceptance blindly. After completing that step, start the same command again.
Let the second startup finish generating all files before installing plugins or copying a world. Watch the console for a clear completion state and stop the server cleanly from the console rather than closing the terminal window. A clean stop flushes world data and reduces the chance of a damaged save.

Configure the new server before inviting players
Set basic server properties
Open server.properties with the server stopped when possible. Review the world name and generation settings, difficulty, game mode, player limit, view distance, simulation distance, whitelist behavior, and the server’s bind and port settings. Change only what you understand, then restart and verify the result in the console.
Set operator and access controls
Grant operator status only to trusted accounts. A whitelist is useful when the server should be private: add intended players and keep it enabled before publishing the address. Treat operator access as administrative access, not as a convenience setting for every player.

Review Purpur-specific configuration deliberately
Purpur exposes additional options in its own configuration files. Start with the defaults, change one group of settings at a time, and record every change. If a setting requires a restart, perform a clean stop and start. Avoid /reload as a plugin-lifecycle shortcut; it can leave plugins and server state in an unreliable condition.
Install plugins without breaking the server
Purpur inherits Paper features. Its FAQ also states that Paper, Spigot, and CraftBukkit plugins generally work because those APIs are upstream-compatible. Compatibility is not absolute: a plugin can fail when its author hard-codes checks for a particular implementation or ignores Paper and its forks.
- Stop the server cleanly.
- Read the plugin’s documentation for the Minecraft and server versions it supports.
- Download the plugin JAR from its legitimate project source and place it in the server’s
pluginsdirectory. - Start Purpur and inspect the console for dependency errors, version warnings, or stack traces.
- Test the plugin’s commands and its effect on a non-critical world before adding more plugins.
- Keep a copy of the working configuration so you can remove the newest plugin if a problem appears.
Do not assume that a plugin marked “Spigot” is automatically safe for every Purpur and Minecraft combination. Match the plugin release to the server release and remove incompatible plugins rather than suppressing startup errors.
Test locally before opening network access
First connect from the same computer using the local connection option in the Minecraft client. Confirm that the selected version joins, the world loads, operators and whitelist rules behave as expected, and installed plugins respond correctly. A local test separates server configuration problems from firewall, router, and address problems.

If another device is on the same home network, test with the host computer’s local network address. LAN players use that local address; they do not need your public internet address.
Let friends connect over the internet
What must be configured
Internet access requires more than a running Java process. You need all of the following:
- The Purpur server must be running and listening on the port configured in
server.properties. - The host operating system’s firewall must allow inbound traffic for that server port and the Java process.
- Your router must forward that port to the host computer’s local network address.
- Players need the correct public address, or a DNS name that resolves to it.
Reserve the host computer’s local address in the router or otherwise keep it stable; a changed local address can silently invalidate the forwarding rule. Make sure the router’s forwarded port and the value in server.properties are identical.
Use a private alternative when port forwarding is unsuitable
If you cannot or do not want to expose a router port, a VPN-based virtual LAN is an alternative for a small, trusted group. Everyone joins the same private network and connects using the host’s address on that network. This changes how players reach the server but does not remove the need to run Purpur, manage Java, and maintain backups.
Protect a public server
Keep the whitelist enabled for a private server, grant operator rights sparingly, and avoid sharing administrative files. Review logs after making the server reachable from the internet. Do not expose unrelated services from the host just because one Minecraft port is forwarded.

Updating the JAR is a controlled migration, not simply a file replacement. Use this order:
- Announce a maintenance window and stop the server cleanly.
- Back up every world,
server.properties, Purpur and Paper configuration, operator and whitelist files, and thepluginsdirectory. - Record the currently working Minecraft version, Purpur build, Java version, and launch command.
- Download the intended build for the intended Minecraft version through the versioned Purpur endpoint.
- Keep the old JAR outside the active path, then replace
purpur.jarwith the downloaded file. - Check every plugin’s compatibility with the new Minecraft and Purpur release before starting.
- Start the server and read the entire console output. Stop and restore the backup if worlds fail to load or plugins report blocking errors.
- Test locally before allowing players back in.
Never copy a world or configuration into a new version without a backup. A configuration option that worked in one release may be renamed, removed, or interpreted differently in another.

Purpur itself does not require a particular hosting model. A local machine gives you direct control, while a managed host trades some control for operational convenience. Compare the real responsibilities before choosing:

Troubleshoot the common installation failures
“Unable to access jarfile purpur.jar”
The command is running in the wrong directory, or the file has a different name. List the directory contents, change into the folder that contains the JAR, and make the command’s filename match exactly. Renaming the active file to purpur.jar avoids build-number changes in scripts.
“Unsupported class version” or a Java startup error
The Java runtime is too old or the command is selecting a different installation than the one you checked. Run java -version in the same terminal or script that starts Purpur, then install or select the Java major version required by your Minecraft release.
The server stops because of the EULA
Read the generated EULA file and follow its acceptance instructions, then start the server again. The first run must be allowed to create its files before normal startup can complete.

A plugin fails during startup
Read the first meaningful error in the console, identify the plugin and dependency named there, and compare its supported Minecraft/server versions. Stop the server, remove or update the incompatible plugin, restore the last known-good configuration if necessary, and retest before adding anything else.
Friends cannot connect, but local testing works
Check the server’s configured port, the host firewall rule, the router’s forwarding target, and the public address being shared. Confirm that the host’s local address has not changed. If your network does not permit inbound forwarding, use a private VPN-based network or a managed host instead of repeatedly changing the Purpur configuration.
The world behaves differently after an update
Stop the server and restore the pre-update world and configuration backup. Confirm that the new JAR matches the intended Minecraft version, review Purpur-specific changes, and test again without plugins if necessary. Upgrade one component at a time so the cause remains identifiable.
Installation checklist
- Target Minecraft version selected and documented.
- Java version verified with
java -version. - Matching Purpur build downloaded from the official versioned endpoint.
- JAR renamed consistently and launched from its own directory.
- EULA instructions completed and first startup allowed to finish.
server.properties, operators, whitelist, and distances reviewed.- Local connection tested before any public exposure.
- Plugin versions checked and console warnings reviewed.
- World and configuration backups made before every version or plugin change.
- Firewall, router forwarding, and public address verified only when internet play is required.
With those steps complete, Purpur provides the Paper-compatible server foundation while leaving its additional behavior available for deliberate configuration. The safest routine is simple: match versions, launch from a known directory, test locally, back up before changes, and expose the network only after the server itself is working.
