Choose the right Playwright install route
Playwright has two related ways to get started. Choose the test-project installer if you are building an automated test suite; use the Playwright Library if you only need a focused screenshot script.

For a new project, check the current Playwright installation requirements before installing: the official page lists Node.js latest 22.x, 24.x, or 26.x and Windows 11+, Windows Server 2019+, or WSL. Supported versions can change, so use the current requirements page rather than treating these as permanent minimums.
Install Playwright on Windows
Option A: create a Playwright Test project
- Open PowerShell in the folder where you want the project and run
npm init playwright@latest. - Answer the setup prompts to create the project. The starter is intended for tests, not required just to capture a screenshot.
- Install the browser binaries if the setup did not already do so: use
npx playwright installfor the default supported browsers, ornpx playwright install chromiumif you only need Chromium.
Option B: install the Library for a screenshot script
- In PowerShell, create and enter a project directory if needed, then initialize npm with
npm init -y. - Install the library:
npm i -D playwright. - Download only Chromium with
npx playwright install chromium, or install the default supported browsers withnpx playwright install.
Playwright browser downloads are separate from the package installation. Each Playwright version expects particular browser binaries; after updating the package, run the install command again if the browser launch fails or the binaries are missing. The browser downloads take a few hundred megabytes, according to Playwright’s browser documentation.

Take and save a website screenshot
In the project directory, save this as screenshot.js. Replace the example URL with the site you want to capture.

})();Run it from that directory with node screenshot.js. The script launches Chromium, opens a page, navigates to the URL, saves the screenshot, and closes the browser. Playwright infers the image type from the filename extension; the example produces PNG. See the Page screenshot API reference for current options, including full-page capture.
The example captures the current viewport. If you need the entire scrollable page, consult the API reference for the fullPage option and add it to the screenshot call, for example await page.screenshot({ path: 'screenshot.png', fullPage: true });.

Choose browsers and manage their downloads
Chromium only or multiple browsers
Use npx playwright install chromium when the task only needs Chromium. Use npx playwright install for the default supported browsers when you need to check behavior across browsers. Browser selection is available through the install CLI; screenshots from different browsers should not be assumed to render identically.
Default cache and custom location
On Windows, Playwright stores browser binaries by default in %USERPROFILE%AppDataLocalms-playwright. To put them elsewhere, set PLAYWRIGHT_BROWSERS_PATH before installing. For example, in PowerShell for the current session:
$env:PLAYWRIGHT_BROWSERS_PATH = 'D:playwright-browsers'

- The browser executable is missing or launch fails after an update: install the browser binaries again with
npx playwright install, or specify the browser you use. Playwright versions require specific browser binaries. - Downloads fail on a network using a proxy: if the error indicates a proxy is required, set
HTTPS_PROXYin PowerShell before running the installer, as described in the Playwright browser download documentation. The default download source is Microsoft’s CDN; that does not guarantee every network can reach it without proxy or policy restrictions. - A custom certificate authority blocks the download: if your network uses an untrusted custom certificate chain, the documentation describes setting
NODE_EXTRA_CA_CERTSto the relevant certificate file before installation. Apply it only when certificate validation is the reported problem. - Downloads time out on a slow connection: the browser documentation describes
PLAYWRIGHT_DOWNLOAD_CONNECTION_TIMEOUTfor increasing the download connection timeout. Use it when the error is a timeout, not as a general installation step. - You are on Windows and see Linux dependency instructions:
npx playwright install-depsdoes not install Linux packages on Windows; the CLI reference says it prints the install command. Use Linux dependency instructions only when working in WSL.
Proxy, certificate, and timeout variables are network-specific troubleshooting measures, not India-specific setup requirements. For exact syntax and current guidance, use the linked Playwright browser and CLI documentation.
