How to install PixelBoard Rambler voice typing on another Android phone

PixelBoard is an unofficial Gboard port that can expose Rambler voice typing on compatible non-Pixel Android phones. Learn the APK setup, keyboard activation, limitations, privacy trade-offs and recovery steps.

You can try Pixel’s Rambler voice typing on a non-Pixel Android phone with PixelBoard, an unofficial, modified build of Gboard maintained by Akshay Kadam. The maintainer’s simplest method is to install its signed release APK, enable PixelBoard as an on-screen keyboard, then choose Rambler under Voice typing. This is a community workaround, not an app or compatibility guarantee from Google, and you should verify the live project instructions before sideloading.

What you are installing

PixelBoard is a modified Gboard build intended to expose Rambler voice typing on compatible Android devices without root. Google’s official documentation lists Rambler for Pixel 11 series phones. PixelBoard extends access through an unofficial port, so “works on any Android” should not be read literally: the maintainer publishes a narrower compatibility matrix, and some newer features remain limited to eligible Pixel hardware.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

PixelBoard can coexist with the Gboard already installed on your phone. You can switch between keyboards later, but Android will still treat PixelBoard as a keyboard that can receive everything you type into it. That makes the download source and your trust decision important.

Check compatibility before downloading

The PixelBoard repository currently lists Android 10 (API 29) through Android 16 Preview and the arm64-v8a CPU architecture. The maintainer recommends Gboard base version 18.4.1.985164140-release-arm64-v8a. It also lists 18.4.1.985164140-beta-arm64-v8a and 18.3.1.977415014-release-arm64-v8a as compatible. These are project-maintainer claims, not Google certification; APKs and supported combinations can change.

Android version Android 10 (API 29) through Android 16 Preview Open Settings and search for Android version or Software information.
CPU architecture arm64-v8a Use your manufacturer’s device information page or a trusted hardware-information utility.

Root Not required according to the maintainer No root setup should be necessary for the direct APK route.

The repository showed release v18.4.1 and a 127 MB APK when checked. Treat both figures as a snapshot, not a permanent requirement. Download the release that is currently published by the maintainer, and avoid repackaged copies from file-sharing sites.

Route 1: install the signed release APK

This is the least complicated route documented by PixelBoard. Menu names differ between Samsung, Motorola, Xiaomi, OnePlus and other Android builds, but the sequence is the same.

  1. Open the maintainer’s PixelBoard GitHub repository and its current release page. Select the stable APK that matches your device architecture and the compatibility notes shown there. Confirm that the file is the signed release supplied by the project.
  2. Download the APK on the Android phone. Use the browser’s download notification or open the file later from your Downloads folder.
  3. Start the installer. Tap the downloaded file in the notification shade or in a file manager. Android may show a warning that your browser or file manager is not allowed to install unknown apps.
  4. Allow that source temporarily. In the prompt, open the setting for installing unknown apps and enable permission for the browser or file manager you used. On many phones this is under Settings > Apps > Special app access > Install unknown apps. The wording varies by manufacturer and Android version.
  5. Return to the APK and install it. Review Android’s package prompt, tap Install, and wait for completion. If Android reports that the package is incompatible, stop rather than forcing it; recheck the architecture, Android version and release notes.
  6. Disable the source permission when finished. Returning the browser or file manager to “not allowed” reduces the chance of an accidental sideload later.

Do not uninstall stock Gboard merely to make room. The project says PixelBoard can coexist with it, and keeping the original keyboard gives you a fallback if the port does not behave correctly.

Enable PixelBoard and select Rambler

Installing an APK does not automatically make it your active keyboard. Complete both Android’s keyboard setup and PixelBoard’s voice setting.

  1. Open Settings > System > Languages & input > On-screen keyboard. Some phones call the last screen Manage keyboards.
  2. Enable PixelBoard. Read Android’s warning about keyboard access and accept only if you understand that a keyboard can process text entered through it.
  3. Choose PixelBoard as the current keyboard. You may see a keyboard icon in the navigation bar, a keyboard selector in the notification shade, or a long-press option on the spacebar. Select PixelBoard.
  4. Open PixelBoard’s settings and go to Voice typing.
  5. Set Dictation type to Rambler. The repository says Advanced Voice Typing is enabled by default and that current settings take effect without a restart, although labels can change between builds.
  6. Open any text field, such as a message draft or a notes page. Tap PixelBoard’s microphone button and grant microphone permission when Android asks.
  7. Speak a short sentence first. Check that words appear in the field, then try punctuation and a correction before relying on it for longer dictation.

If the Rambler choice does not appear, confirm that PixelBoard—not stock Gboard—is the active keyboard, then reopen PixelBoard settings. A restart is not normally required by the current instructions, but closing and reopening the text app can refresh a keyboard selector that has not updated.

What Rambler can do

Google describes Rambler as voice input that turns spoken thoughts into cleaned-up text. It can remove filler, apply grammar and punctuation, and accept conversational corrections or rewrites. For example, you can dictate a rough thought, ask for a correction, and continue speaking rather than manually editing every word.

Google’s documented language support includes Arabic, English, French, German, Hindi and other supported Indian languages, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, Russian and Spanish. Google also says you can switch languages in the middle of a sentence. Actual language availability can depend on the installed build, account and device, so test the languages you need before replacing your normal dictation workflow.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The microphone button remains the entry point: tap it in a text field, speak, and review the returned text. Rambler can make mistakes, particularly with names, technical terms, accents and background noise. Proofread anything consequential before sending or publishing it.

Online and offline behavior

Rambler is not a fully offline equivalent of its connected experience. Google says an active internet connection is needed for the full feature set. With offline processing, basic cleanup, punctuation and capitalization can remain available; advanced stylistic rewrites and complex conversational voice editing resume when connectivity returns. A phone that is temporarily offline may therefore still produce usable dictation while losing the higher-level editing functions.

PixelBoard’s README claims that core natural voice typing and some writing tools work on supported Android devices. It also says newer Writing Tools V2 and on-device inference options are gated to eligible Pixel hardware. Installing PixelBoard on another phone does not unlock those Pixel-only capabilities.

Core Rambler dictation Claimed by the PixelBoard maintainer, subject to the project’s device and version matrix.
Grammar, punctuation and filler cleanup Part of Google’s Rambler description; results can vary and should be checked.
Conversational corrections and stylistic rewrites Internet connection required for the advanced functions according to Google.
Basic offline cleanup Google says basic cleanup, punctuation and capitalization can continue offline.
Writing Tools V2 and some on-device inference options PixelBoard says these are gated to eligible Pixel hardware, so do not expect them on every ported installation.

Privacy and security decisions

Google’s official Rambler documentation states: When you use Rambler, your text, audio input, and your corrections to voice output will be temporarily processed by Google. The same documentation says that material is not saved, stored or shared and is deleted after the text is delivered. Those statements describe Google’s official feature; they are not an independent security audit of PixelBoard.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The PixelBoard README identifies the project as independent and unaffiliated with Google, provides it as-is without warranty, and places sideloading risks on users. Independent coverage has also warned that a modified APK can create security and privacy exposure, and that a future Gboard or server-side change could stop the workaround.

  • Obtain the APK only from the maintainer’s project release, and verify the release name and architecture before installing.
  • Remember that a keyboard can receive text typed into messages, documents, passwords and forms. Do not enable it on a device you cannot reasonably trust.
  • Keep Play Protect and Android security updates enabled. If your phone flags the package, do not bypass the warning casually.
  • Use PixelBoard only when you accept the risks of a modified keyboard. You can switch back to stock Gboard at any time through the keyboard selector.

Troubleshoot common installation and setup failures

Android says the app cannot be installed

  • Check that your phone is arm64-v8a and falls within the Android range listed by the current repository.
  • Delete an incomplete download and obtain the APK again from the project release page.
  • Check whether an older PixelBoard package is already installed. If Android reports a signature or downgrade conflict, back up any settings, uninstall the old port, and install the current release only if you are comfortable losing that app’s local configuration.
  • Do not force-install a build for another architecture or use a random “universal” repack.

PixelBoard installed but does not appear in the keyboard list

Open Settings > System > Languages & input > On-screen keyboard (or Manage keyboards), then look for a disabled PixelBoard entry. Enable it and use Android’s keyboard selector to make it active. Manufacturer software may place the same controls under General management, Additional settings or Keyboard list and default.

Rambler is missing from Voice typing

Confirm that the active keyboard is PixelBoard, not stock Gboard. Open PixelBoard settings directly, enter Voice typing and look for Dictation type. If the option remains absent, compare the installed APK and Gboard base version with the current compatibility notes; a supported Android version alone does not guarantee that every release combination exposes the port.

The microphone button does nothing

  • Check Settings > Apps > PixelBoard > Permissions and allow Microphone.
  • Test the phone’s microphone in a recorder or camera app. If those apps also fail, the problem is not Rambler.
  • Turn off another app’s active microphone session, reconnect to the internet for advanced functions, and try a simple text field.

Dictation works but rewrites or corrections fail

Basic transcription can continue with limited connectivity, while Google says advanced stylistic rewrites and complex conversational editing need an internet connection. Move to a stable connection and try again. If only Pixel-specific Writing Tools are missing, that is an advertised hardware limitation rather than an installation error.

The keyboard is unstable or you want to undo the change

Use the keyboard selector to return to Gboard, then open Settings > Apps > PixelBoard and uninstall it. Keep stock Gboard installed until you have confirmed that the port works for your needs. If an update breaks the port, the same switch-back process restores your normal keyboard while you check the maintainer’s newer release notes.

Route 2: install with ADB

ADB is useful for developers or anyone who already manages APKs from a computer. It does not make PixelBoard official or remove the compatibility and trust considerations.

  1. Enable Developer options on the phone, then turn on USB debugging.
  2. Connect the phone to a computer and approve the debugging authorization prompt on the device.
  3. Place the PixelBoard APK where your computer’s ADB tools can access it. The maintainer’s example command assumes the file is named output/PixelBoard.apk.
  4. Run adb install -r output/PixelBoard.apk.
  5. Complete the same Android keyboard-enabling and Rambler-selection steps described above.

If ADB reports an architecture, signature or version error, stop and correct the package choice rather than repeating the command with force flags.

Route 3: patch a stock Gboard APK with Morphe Manager

The PixelBoard README also describes a Morphe Manager route that patches a stock Gboard base APK with the PixelBoard patch bundle. This is a more advanced path because you must choose a compatible base package and apply the project’s current patch instructions.

A September 2026 third-party guide described an earlier workflow involving Jason Wu’s Gboard patch source, selecting a supported APK, applying the patch and enabling Advanced Voice Typing. Treat that as historical context, not as a guaranteed current procedure. Follow the live PixelBoard README for the exact patch source, package version and settings; do not combine the older guide’s steps with newer version numbers as if they were one tested recipe.

PixelBoard versus an ordinary app-store keyboard

If sideloading a modified keyboard is outside your risk tolerance, use a conventional keyboard from your device’s app store instead. Microsoft SwiftKey is one example identified in current coverage, but its feature set, language support and behavior are not established here as equivalent to Rambler.

Decision factor PixelBoard Ordinary app-store keyboard
Installation channel Signed APK from a community project, installed by sideloading or ADB. Store-distributed app with the store’s normal update and review process.
Reason to choose it You specifically want Rambler-style voice input on a non-Pixel phone. You prefer a conventional installation or a different dictation and typing feature set.
Compatibility Maintainer lists Android 10 through Android 16 Preview, arm64-v8a and selected Gboard builds. Depends on the individual app’s published requirements.
Trust model Modified keyboard supplied by an unaffiliated maintainer; no claim of a security audit. Store distribution reduces sideloading steps but does not make any keyboard risk-free.
Connectivity Google says Rambler’s advanced rewrites need an active connection; basic offline cleanup may remain. Varies by app and feature; verify its own documentation.

Updates, switching and removal

Check the PixelBoard repository before updating because compatibility, package versions and menu labels can move quickly. Install a newer signed release only after reading its notes and confirming that it matches your phone’s architecture and Android version. Keep stock Gboard available as a fallback.

To switch keyboards without uninstalling anything, open a text field and use Android’s keyboard icon or spacebar switcher. To remove PixelBoard, first switch to another keyboard, then use Settings > Apps > PixelBoard > Uninstall. If you enabled installation from an unknown source for the setup, turn that permission off afterward.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is this the right workaround for you?

PixelBoard is appropriate only when you understand that you are installing an unofficial keyboard to obtain a feature Google officially documents for Pixel 11 series devices. Check the live compatibility matrix, use the maintainer’s release APK, complete both keyboard setup stages, and test dictation before trusting it with important text. If the modified-keyboard trust model or online processing requirements do not fit your use case, stay with the stock keyboard or choose a conventional app-store alternative instead.
