How to Install PIP on Windows

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

pip is Python’s package installer, and on Windows it’s the difference between saying yes to a dependency and wrestling with manual installs. When pip is missing, you’ll typically see errors like pip is not recognized or No module named pip.

This guide walks you through the most reliable ways to install (or repair) pip on Windows, then shows how to verify it and fix the common failure modes that waste the most time.

What pip is and why Windows installs fail

pip is included with most Python releases, but it can be absent if your Python installation was created with a minimal option, if you installed only parts of Python, or if multiple Python versions got mixed on PATH. Some users also end up with a Store-based Python where commands behave differently.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Typical symptoms:

  • pip command not found in Command Prompt or PowerShell
  • python -m pip fails with No module named pip
  • ensurepip does nothing because pip is already present or because the environment is constrained
  • pip exists, but it points to the wrong Python version

Prerequisites: confirm your Python and PATH situation

Before touching pip, confirm which Python you’re actually running. Windows can have several Python installations, so you want the commands to bind to the one you intend.

#1 Best Overall

Run these in Command Prompt or PowerShell:

  1. python --version
  2. py --version
  3. where python (Command Prompt) or Get-Command python (PowerShell)

Then check whether pip is already available:

  1. python -m pip --version

If this prints a version number, pip is installed and you can skip to verification and upgrade.

Method 1: Install/repair pip using python -m ensurepip

For many Windows setups, the cleanest fix is to use Python’s built-in ensurepip. It installs pip into the current Python environment without relying on external scripts.

Steps:

  1. Run:

python -m ensurepip --upgrade

  1. Verify pip:

python -m pip --version

  1. If you also want the pip command, confirm it resolves correctly. Prefer python -m pip to avoid PATH confusion.

If ensurepip succeeds, you’re done. If it fails, move to Method 2 or create a virtual environment (Method 3).

Method 2: Install pip with get-pip.py (last resort when ensurepip fails)

If python -m ensurepip fails (for example, because the Python build doesn’t include ensurepip modules, or you’re in a constrained environment), you can install pip using the official bootstrap script get-pip.py.

Steps to install pip with get-pip.py

  1. Create a working folder, for example:

mkdir C:\pip-temp

  1. Download get-pip.py into that folder. Use a browser or a download tool. The official source is hosted by Python’s packaging team.
  2. Open Command Prompt in that folder, then run:

python get-pip.py

  1. Verify:

python -m pip --version

If you see an error that mentions permissions, you may need to use a user-level installation or avoid system Python entirely by using a virtual environment (Method 3).

Method 3: Install pip in a virtual environment

When you’re missing pip system-wide, the most reliable workflow is usually to create a virtual environment and then install packages there. Even if PATH is messy, the virtual environment ties everything to one Python interpreter.

Steps (PowerShell or Command Prompt):

  1. Create a folder for your project:

mkdir C:\Projects\demo

cd C:\Projects\demo

  1. Create the environment (Python must support venv):

python -m venv .venv

  1. Activate it:

.\.venv\Scripts\activate

  1. Verify the interpreter:

python --version

  1. Install pip inside the environment:

python -m ensurepip --upgrade

If pip is not present in the environment, you can repeat the get-pip.py approach while the venv is active, so pip lands inside .venv instead of your global Python.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Verify pip:

python -m pip --version

Method 4: Microsoft Store Python and Windows version gotchas

Windows users sometimes install Python from the Microsoft Store. In those setups, python may resolve differently than expected, and “pip missing” reports can come from calling pip for one interpreter while Python refers to another.

Use this workflow to disambiguate:

  1. Check the active interpreter:

where python

If multiple paths appear, also run:

  1. py -0p (lists installed Python versions)
  2. Pick the correct one and run pip through it, for example:

py -3.12 -m pip --version

Where -3.12 matches the version shown by py -0p.

Verify pip works and upgrade it safely

After installation, verify pip by checking the version and doing a harmless query (not an install) first.

  • Equipped with a blazing fast Core i5 2.00 GHz processor.

Run:

  1. python -m pip --version
  2. python -m pip list

Then upgrade pip. This helps avoid issues with dependency resolution and modern packages:

python -m pip install --upgrade pip

If you’re using a virtual environment, this command upgrades pip only inside that environment.

Common problems and troubleshooting

Most pip issues on Windows are not “pip is broken” problems—they’re “you’re running the wrong interpreter” or “Windows permissions/PATH are stopping the installer” problems.

pip command not found

Try pip through Python:

python -m pip --version

If that works, your pip executable isn’t on PATH (or isn’t created). Prefer python -m pip going forward.

ensurepip says nothing to do or cannot install

If ensurepip reports that pip is already installed, confirm with python -m pip --version. If it can’t install, verify you’re using the same Python installation you expect (check python --version and where python).

SSL errors when installing packages

Some corporate networks or misconfigured certificate stores cause errors like certificate verify failed. Update pip first (sometimes it fixes old TLS behavior), then confirm CA bundles.

Commands to try:

  1. python -m pip install --upgrade pip
  2. python -m pip install --upgrade setuptools wheel

If SSL still fails, you may need to configure trusted certificates or install the organization’s CA bundle. The correct fix depends on your environment.

Permission denied or access is denied

If you installed Python in a protected location, python get-pip.py or pip install may fail. Two safe options:

  • Use a virtual environment (Method 3)
  • Use a user installation if your workflow requires it (example): python -m pip install --user --upgrade pip

Wrong Python/pip pairing (mixed installs)

This is the most common “pip is installed but still fails” scenario. If you have Python 3.10 and 3.12 installed, typing pip might refer to the other interpreter.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Running pip directly instead of python -m pip when PATH is uncertain
  • Installing pip into one Python version, then using another to run commands
  • Mixing global installs with virtual-environment workflows
  • Using an outdated pip without upgrading (especially when installing newer packages)
  • Retrying installs repeatedly with the same broken configuration, instead of verifying the interpreter with python --version and python -m pip --version

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to install pip separately on Windows?

Most Python installs from python.org include pip by default. If python -m pip --version works, you don’t need to install anything.

Should I use Command Prompt or PowerShell?

Either works. The commands here are the same. If you’re using activation scripts for a virtual environment, ensure you use the correct path separator and the right activation command for your shell.

What’s the safest way to install pip for a new project?

Create a virtual environment with python -m venv .venv, activate it, then run python -m ensurepip --upgrade and upgrade pip with python -m pip install --upgrade pip.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I uninstall pip?

Yes, but it’s rarely worth doing. If pip is broken, re-running ensurepip or upgrading pip usually fixes it. Prefer fixing the environment rather than removing system components.

Bottom Line

On Windows, installing pip is usually a two-step process: confirm your Python interpreter, then run python -m ensurepip --upgrade. If that doesn’t work, use get-pip.py for the specific Python install you want.

When you can, use a virtual environment—most “pip missing” and “pip not found” issues disappear because the environment keeps interpreter and tools aligned.
