Microsoft then attaches the license to that account; you download Office from the account dashboard and activate it when you first open an app. You do not normally type the key again for a reinstall.
Windows and Mac use different installers, and Office 2021 is licensed for one Windows PC or one Mac under the consumer terms. Check your edition, operating-system version and account before starting. Internet access is required for redemption, activation and periodic license confirmation.

What you need before installing
Office 2021 installation has two separate stages: redeeming the product key and installing the applications. Redemption creates the license record in a Microsoft account. Installation downloads the applications associated with that record. Keeping those stages separate explains why a key that has already been redeemed cannot be used as a second installation code.

- A Microsoft account: Use the account you intend to keep permanently associated with the license. Later installations and reinstalls use this account instead of the key.
- An unused product key: This is needed only for a first redemption. Keys commonly appear as five groups of five characters. If the setup page asks for the key without hyphens, remove the hyphens.
- An internet connection: You need connectivity for account association, activation and periodic license checks. Microsoft also recommends connecting regularly so Office can receive updates.
- A compatible computer: Confirm the operating system, edition and device scope before redeeming. A consumer Office 2021 license covers one Windows PC or one Mac, not multiple computers.
- Enough local access: On Windows you must be able to run an installer and approve a request to make changes. On macOS you must be able to open a package installer and enter an administrator password if macOS requests it.
Check the edition, operating system and apps
Office 2021 is sold in several editions. The applications and platforms differ, so identify the edition printed on your purchase or license record before downloading.

A Windows key and a Mac installation are not interchangeable if the license terms or edition do not include that platform. If your purchase description is unclear, resolve that question with the seller before redeeming: redemption permanently associates the key with an account.
Redeem a new Office 2021 product key
Do this once for a key that has never been used. Use the account that should own the license rather than a temporary work, school or family account that you may lose access to.
- Open office.com/setup or Microsoft365.com/setup.
- Sign in with your Microsoft account. If you do not have one, create an account and record its recovery information.
- Enter the product key when the page displays a key field. Enter the characters without hyphens if the page instructs you to do so. If no key field appears, Microsoft says the key may already have been entered automatically; continue through the redemption prompts rather than trying to force another entry.
- Review the product and account shown on screen, then complete the redemption. This step binds the Office license to the signed-in account.
- Keep a record of the account email, not just the key. The account is what you will use for future downloads, reinstalls and license management.
After successful redemption, the key is no longer a reusable installation code. It remains useful as proof of purchase, but Office will normally look up the license through the account instead.

- Open the Microsoft account dashboard associated with the redeemed key and locate the Office 2021 product.
- Select Install. Where Microsoft offers the choice, select the preferred language and 32-bit or 64-bit Windows build. Choose 64-bit when your add-ins and other software support it; choose 32-bit when you depend on older 32-bit add-ins or compatibility requirements.
- Start the download and keep the browser window open until the installer has been created. The installer is generated for the account and product shown on that page.
If the Office product does not appear, stop before buying another key. Sign out, return to the account used during redemption and check the account’s services or subscriptions area. A different Microsoft account is the most common explanation for an apparently missing license.

Install Office 2021 on Windows
- From the account’s Office installation page, download the Windows installer.
- Open the downloaded file from your browser’s download list or the Downloads folder.
- When Windows asks whether the installer may make changes, choose Yes only if the file came from the Microsoft account installation page.
- Wait while setup downloads and configures the applications. Keep the computer connected and do not shut it down during this stage.
- When the installation-complete message appears, open Word, Excel or another included application from the Start menu.
- Accept the license terms if Office displays them. Office generally activates as the application opens. If the Activation Wizard appears instead, follow its sign-in or verification prompts.
The installer may place several applications on the computer even if you expect to use only one. The exact set is controlled by the edition attached to the license; it is not evidence that a second license was created.
Install Office 2021 on a Mac
- Sign in to the Microsoft account that owns the redeemed Office 2021 license and select Install.
- Open the downloaded installer package in the Downloads folder. macOS may ask for an administrator password before it proceeds.
- Follow the package install screens. Allow the installer to finish before opening an Office application.
- Launch Word. In the What’s New window, select Get Started to begin activation.
- Sign in with the same Microsoft account used for redemption and complete any license or privacy prompts.
Office 2021 for Mac is 64-bit. Microsoft’s FAQ lists support for the three most recent macOS versions, so an older Mac operating system may need an upgrade before installation. Because that list changes as Apple releases major versions, check Microsoft’s current compatibility information when planning a new installation.
Complete activation and verify the license
Activation confirms that the installed applications match the license associated with your account. Microsoft states, “Internet access is required to activate apps, like Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.” A connection is therefore required even when the product was purchased as a one-time license.
- Open an included Office application after installation.
- Sign in if Office requests an account. Use the account that redeemed the key, not an alternate account that happens to be active in the browser.
- Accept the license terms when prompted.
- If the Activation Wizard opens, follow its prompts until it reports that activation is complete.
- Open a second included application and check that it opens without an activation banner. This confirms that the account and installed product are aligned.
Office may require periodic online confirmation after the initial activation. If you work offline for an extended period, connect the computer so the license can be checked and updates can be delivered.

Reinstall Office when the key says it was already used
The message that a product key has already been used normally means the key was successfully redeemed earlier. It is not, by itself, evidence that you need a replacement key.
- Go to the Microsoft account sign-in page and try the account you used during the first redemption.
- Open the account’s Office product or services page.
- Select Install for the listed Office 2021 product.
- Choose the installer for Windows or Mac and follow the platform-specific steps above.
If you cannot remember the account, search your Microsoft account emails for the original redemption confirmation and look for the account identity shown there. Do not repeatedly submit the key at the setup page; redemption is a one-time association.
When a separately purchased key does not work
If you bought a key separately from the software and Microsoft rejects it as invalid, already used or blocked, the seller may have supplied a stolen, abused or otherwise unauthorized key. Microsoft advises contacting the seller and requesting a refund. Be cautious of listings that offer unusually cheap keys outside Microsoft or authorized channels, because a key can stop working after redemption if its source is challenged.
Keep the receipt, order number and seller correspondence. Those records are more useful in a refund dispute than repeatedly attempting the same code. Buying a second key before resolving the first transaction can leave you with two unusable codes and no clearer account ownership.

Troubleshoot activation failures
The wrong Microsoft account is signed in
Sign out of Office and sign back in with the account that redeemed the key. A personal account and a work or school account can have similar email addresses but separate licenses. Check the account’s Office product list before reinstalling.
The Activation Wizard keeps returning
Open the Wizard from the Office application and complete its prompts while connected to the internet. If the product shown does not match the edition you purchased, stop and verify the account and key source rather than activating an unrelated product.
Mac sign-in fails
Quit the Office application, reopen it and select Get Started from the What’s New window when available. Confirm that macOS is one of the three versions currently supported for Office 2021 and that the sign-in account is the redemption account. Microsoft provides separate Mac activation and troubleshooting guidance; the exact error message determines the appropriate recovery step.

Office is installed but the product is missing from the account
This usually indicates that redemption occurred under another account. Check every Microsoft account used during purchase and redemption. Do not redeem a second key to compensate for an account mix-up; a second redemption creates a separate license rather than moving the first one.

The computer has no internet connection
Connect temporarily to complete redemption, installation and activation. Offline use after activation may be possible for a time, but periodic license confirmation still requires connectivity. Regular connections also allow Office to receive updates.
Understand device limits and moving to another computer
Consumer Office 2021 terms cover one Windows 10/11 PC or one Mac that runs one of the three most recent macOS versions. Installing the same consumer license on a second computer is outside that one-device scope. If you replace a computer, uninstall Office from the old device, sign in to the owning account on the new device and use its Install control. Whether a transfer is permitted in your purchase terms can depend on the license type and region, so retain the original proof of purchase.
A pre-installed or bundled copy can also require an online pre-entitlement check. That check, like redemption and activation, needs internet access.

Choose based on the applications, number of devices and servicing model you actually need. Do not assume that a one-time purchase includes the same cloud services or future feature additions as a subscription.
Support status and security considerations
Microsoft’s current key-support information states that Office 2021 support has ended. That is a lifecycle fact, not an installation error: a valid key can still redeem and activate while the edition is outside Microsoft’s supported period. Support status is date-sensitive, so confirm Microsoft’s current lifecycle information before deploying Office 2021 on a work or school computer.
When support has ended, weigh the consequences before relying on the product for sensitive work. You may receive fewer or no new security fixes, and technical support options can be limited. Keep the operating system, browser, antivirus and other software current, maintain backups and avoid treating a successful activation as a guarantee of continuing support.
