But installation alone does not make a reliable 24/7 streaming server: OBS requires a Linux display system and OpenGL-compatible graphics, and the available documentation does not establish a working headless setup or a suitable Hetzner instance for continuous streaming. Treat this as a feasibility-first setup guide, not a verified deployment recipe.
What to confirm before creating a server
A Hetzner Cloud server is a virtual machine. For an internet-connected public network interface, Hetzner says a Primary IP is needed; server and IP charges are separate considerations. Its documentation describes both shared-resource and dedicated-resource server types, but that distinction alone does not identify a machine suitable for OBS.

The central issue is graphics, not just processor capacity. OBS lists an OpenGL 3.3-compatible GPU and an X window system or Wayland among its Linux requirements. It also cautions that meeting the listed requirements does not guarantee a system can stream or record. A standard headless virtual machine should not be assumed to meet these needs automatically.
| Decision | What is established | What you still need to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Server type | Hetzner distinguishes shared-resource and dedicated-resource servers; dedicated instances have dedicated CPU resources. | Whether a particular instance can sustain your OBS workload and expose a suitable graphics or encoding path. |
| Public networking | A Primary IP is needed for a public internet-connected interface. | Current IP and server charges, and any current traffic or service limits relevant to your stream. |
| Linux graphics | OBS lists OpenGL 3.3-compatible graphics and X or Wayland as Linux prerequisites. | How the chosen VM will provide and maintain those prerequisites without a physical desktop. |
| Hardware encoding | OBS says hardware encoding can reduce CPU workload; older encoder generations can produce lower image quality at the same bitrate. | Whether the selected Hetzner VM exposes a compatible hardware encoder. The available documentation does not establish that it does. |
Hetzner’s Cloud Overview was last changed June 28, 2022, and its server-creation documentation December 13, 2021. Check current instance specifications, networking details, and pricing in Hetzner’s own documentation and console before committing. Do not choose a plan based only on its CPU label.

Create the Hetzner Cloud server
- Choose a Linux image. In Hetzner Cloud’s server creation flow, select the distribution you plan to use. Hetzner’s overview documents Ubuntu and other Linux families. Choose one for which you can follow current OBS installation instructions.
- Select the location and server type. Compare current regional availability and the instance specifications relevant to your workload. The cited documentation does not provide a sizing recommendation for OBS or prove that a particular instance can stream continuously.
- Decide on public networking. If the machine needs a public internet connection, include a Primary IP and account for its separate cost.
- Add your SSH key before creating the server. Select the key in the provisioning flow. Hetzner warns that the Console cannot add an SSH key after creation, so resolve access first rather than assuming you can attach one later.
- Configure the firewall. Enable a firewall during provisioning and expose only the services required for administration and your chosen workflow. Hetzner identifies firewall configuration as a server-creation option; its documentation cited here does not prescribe OBS-specific rules.
- Review backup and other options, then create the server. Check the current settings and their costs in the console before confirming. The cited sources do not establish a backup policy for a 24/7 OBS deployment.
Install OBS using the instructions for your Linux distribution
Use OBS’s official Linux Installation page for the selected distribution rather than copying commands from an old guide. That page, dated August 26, 2021, recommends Flathub for non-Ubuntu distributions and describes an Ubuntu route using the OBS Studio PPA and apt. Because the page is dated, check its current linked instructions and your distribution’s support before installing; the available material does not establish that an older command sequence remains appropriate for every current image.
- Connect to the server over SSH using the private key corresponding to the key selected during provisioning.
- Update the operating system using the package-management instructions for the chosen Linux image.
- Open the current OBS Linux installation instructions and follow the method listed for that distribution. For Ubuntu, verify the current PPA and apt steps there; for other distributions, check the page’s Flathub recommendation or distribution-specific guidance.
- Do not treat a successful package installation as proof that OBS can run. Before configuring a stream, confirm the VM has a working X or Wayland session and OpenGL 3.3-compatible graphics, and test that OBS can actually start and render on that setup.
The available OBS and Hetzner documentation does not explain a supported Hetzner-specific method to supply the display and OpenGL prerequisites on a headless VM. If you cannot verify that part for your selected image and instance, stop here: installing OBS packages is not enough to establish a functional streaming setup.

Configure YouTube only after the graphics test passes
OBS’s quick-start guidance recommends using its Auto-Configuration Wizard and testing output for a few minutes. Use that as a preflight check, not as evidence of 24/7 reliability. The YouTube material available here concerns HDR streaming and says to choose YouTube RTMPS in OBS in that HDR context; it does not substantiate standard-stream bitrate, resolution, frame-rate, or keyframe recommendations.
- Check your channel’s current live-stream requirements in YouTube’s official Live documentation and YouTube Studio before planning the stream. Confirm that the channel can go live and that the video and audio you intend to use are yours to stream or properly licensed.
- Use current YouTube encoder guidance for the stream format and settings you select. Do not infer ordinary H.264 bitrate, resolution, frame-rate, or keyframe values from HDR-specific instructions.
- Enter the stream key through OBS’s current YouTube connection workflow. Treat the key as a password: do not publish it, place it in a public script, or share it. If it is exposed, replace it through YouTube Studio.
- Run OBS’s Auto-Configuration Wizard, then make a short test output. Check that OBS connects and that YouTube receives a stable picture and audio before scheduling a longer broadcast.
OBS recommends a test of a few minutes; that is a useful check for basic output, but it does not demonstrate that a Hetzner VM, its display session, or its network path will remain available around the clock.

What a genuine 24/7 setup still needs
A continuous stream also needs a verified way to keep the graphical session and OBS running, restart them after failure or reboot, detect a dropped YouTube connection, and alert someone when recovery fails. The cited OBS quick-start material supports a short test, not a process-supervision or recovery design. Do not assume that opening OBS once in an SSH session provides unattended operation.
- Validate the selected VM’s graphics, display session, and encoder path under the actual stream workload.
- Test what happens after OBS exits, the server reboots, or YouTube drops the connection.
- Choose and verify a supervision and monitoring design before relying on the channel to stay live.
- Check current Hetzner server, IP, and outbound-traffic terms and costs for the region and configuration you intend to use.
These points are deployment checks, not a documented, verified headless recipe. The available sources do not establish a specific Hetzner plan, configuration, bitrate, recovery policy, or uptime outcome for this use.

Troubleshooting the main setup blockers
- OBS installs but will not open: confirm the selected distribution’s current installation steps and check whether a working X or Wayland session and compatible OpenGL graphics are available. A headless VM does not automatically satisfy OBS’s Linux graphics requirements.
- OBS opens but cannot render or encode: validate the VM’s actual graphics and encoding capabilities rather than assuming a hardware encoder is exposed. OBS notes that hardware encoding may reduce CPU load, but the cited sources do not verify a Hetzner-specific encoder.
- The server is not reachable from the internet: check that public networking and a Primary IP were selected, then review the firewall and the administration access method you configured.
- You cannot SSH in: confirm that you are using the private key matching the one selected at creation and that the firewall permits your intended administration path. Hetzner says the Console cannot add an SSH key after creation.
- YouTube does not receive a usable test: check the current YouTube connection workflow, stream-key status, and YouTube’s current encoder instructions. The HDR-specific RTMPS reference does not supply ordinary stream settings.
- The stream stops after a session ends or a reboot: the available quick-start guidance does not provide a continuous-service recovery procedure. Verify supervision, restart behavior, and monitoring before relying on an always-on broadcast.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep uploaded videos playing on a YouTube channel rather than to broadcast a live camera or desktop, StreamNeo is a simpler alternative to operating a self-managed OBS server: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from its cloud service, so nothing has to stay running on your computer or at home.
- Each slot runs one always-on YouTube stream, with uploaded video played as made up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, without re-encoding or quality tiers.
- It includes 10 GB storage per slot, pooled across active slots, looping and playlists, automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream, and StreamNeo team support.
- The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. You can choose daily, weekly, monthly, six-month, or yearly billing and cancel any time. UPI and cards are available in India; card checkout is available worldwide.
- Monthly billing: $9.99 per month.
StreamNeo streams uploaded videos to YouTube; it is not a way to broadcast a live camera. See StreamNeo, or start the free first day.
