The instance also needs enough CPU, memory, and sustained network capacity for your chosen stream, and a headless Linux server needs a working display/session for OBS. A powered-on VM does not guarantee a live, healthy broadcast.
This guide lays out the deployment and YouTube configuration without assuming that a particular free-tier shape can encode a given resolution or that one Linux installation command works for every Ubuntu release. Confirm the current OBS instructions for your exact operating system before installing.

Before you start: check the stream and account prerequisites
First decide what OBS will broadcast. OBS on a VPS can produce a scene or play media you configure in OBS; a prerecorded looping stream is different from a camera-based live production. For continuous playback, make sure you have the rights to every video, image, and audio track. Having a stream key or a cloud server does not grant permission to rebroadcast copyrighted material, and YouTube may restrict live streaming or monetization under its policies.
- Your YouTube channel must be eligible to live stream, and live streaming must be enabled for it.
- You need a YouTube live stream destination and its stream key. Treat the key like a password: anyone who obtains it may be able to broadcast to your stream.
- You need an OCI account, a Linux VM, SSH access, and a way to maintain the VM after installation.
- Choose an operating-system image and OBS installation method only after checking the current OBS Linux instructions for that exact distribution and release.
Choose an OCI instance for the workload, not just the price
OCI offers virtual-machine shapes with different CPU, memory, and network resources; flexible shapes let you select CPU and memory, and network bandwidth scales with OCPUs. The OBS workload varies with the encoder, codec, resolution, frame rate, scene complexity, and any video processing. A small or Always Free-eligible instance is not evidence that a particular stream will encode reliably.
#1 Best Overall
- 【1080P HD High Quality】Capture resolution up to 1080p for video source and it is ideal for all HDMI devices such as PS4, PS3, Xbox One, Xbox 360, Wii U, DVDs, DSLR, Camera, Security Camera and set top box. Note: Video input supports 4K30/60Hz and 1080p120/144Hz. Does not support 4K120Hz/144Hz. Output supports up to 2K30Hz.
- 【Plug and Play】No driver or external power supply required, true PnP. Once plugged in, the device is identified automatically as a webcam. Detect input and adjust output automatically. Won't occupy CPU, optional audio capture. No freeze with correct setting.
- 【Compatible with Multiple Systems】suitable for Windows and Mac OS. High speed USB 3.0 technology and superior low latency technology makes it easier for you to transmit live streaming to Twitch, Youtube, Facebook, Twitter, OBS, Potplayer and VLC.
- 【HDMI LOOP-OUT】Based on the high-speed USB 3.0 technology, it can capture one single channel HD HDMI video signal. There is no delay when you are playing game live.
- 【Support Mic-in for Commentary】Rybozen capture card has microphone input and you can use it to add external commentary when playing a game. Please note: it only accepts 3.5mm TRS standard microphone headset.
- In the OCI Console, create a Linux compute instance in a region available to you. Review the current OCI Compute and Free Tier pages for eligible shapes, limits, and regional availability before selecting a shape.
- Choose CPU and memory with the intended OBS workload in mind. If you are unsure, begin with a conservative output profile, then test CPU use and stream health before increasing resolution or frame rate.
- Attach enough boot and video storage for the operating system, OBS, and any media you plan to keep on the VM. Consider that an always-on stream may need substantial storage for long recordings or source files.
- Configure SSH administration using a key pair and restrict inbound access to the administration method you actually use. The encoder connection to YouTube is outbound; do not open arbitrary inbound ports just to make OBS send a stream.
Exact OCI Console labels, Free Tier limits, available shapes, security rules, and network capacity can vary by region and change over time. Check the current OCI documentation and the selected image’s firewall behavior rather than copying a rule for a different setup.
Install OBS on the selected Linux release
OBS installation on Linux depends on the distribution and release. Use the current installation directions published by OBS for the exact OS image on your instance. Do not assume a package command for one Ubuntu release—or another distribution—will work unchanged on yours.

- 4K60 Capture: Record in cinematic quality with crisp detail and vivid colors
- HFR Support: Play and capture in 1440p120 or 1080p240
- HDR10 Support: Capture brilliant HDR content with tone mapping on Windows
- Cross-Platform Compatible: Works with PS5, Xbox Series X/S, Switch 2, and more
- Analog Audio In: Capture in-game chat or commentary with 3.5mm input
- Connect to the VM over SSH and confirm its distribution and release using the operating system’s release information.
- Open the OBS Project’s official Linux installation instructions and select the matching distribution and release. Follow the supported repository or package steps there; verify that the OBS package is available for that release before proceeding.
- Install OBS and its dependencies using those current instructions. Check that the installed version launches successfully under the account and session you intend to use.
- Before configuring a 24/7 service, resolve how OBS will obtain a display and session on this headless server. OBS is a graphical application; a VPS without a desktop session does not automatically provide the display environment it needs. Choose and validate a supported display/session setup for your OS image rather than assuming an SSH terminal alone is sufficient.
The appropriate headless-display setup and process-supervision commands depend on the image and session design. Validate those details on the actual instance before relying on them; an unverified service command can leave OBS unable to start after a restart.
Configure OBS for YouTube
Set the stream destination and protect the key
- In YouTube Studio, create or open the live stream in Live Control Room and copy its stream key.
- In OBS, open Settings → Stream, choose YouTube as the service, and enter the stream key or connect using the available account flow.
- Do not paste the key into a public terminal transcript, screenshot, script repository, or support post. If it is exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio and update OBS.
Choose an encoder profile that matches the instance
YouTube’s current encoder guidance gives the following ingest recommendations. These are YouTube recommendations, not proof that a particular OCI VM can encode or sustain the profile.

| Output profile | Codec | YouTube recommended bitrate | YouTube minimum bitrate |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1080p at 30 fps | H.264 | 14 Mbps | 5 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | H.264 | 17 Mbps | 6 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | AV1 or H.265 | 10 Mbps | 4 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | AV1 or H.265 | 12 Mbps | 4 Mbps |
In OBS, open Settings → Output and select the encoder available in your OBS build and on your instance. For H.264 SDR, configure constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval; YouTube recommends two seconds and says not to exceed four. Use the bitrate row for your chosen codec and output format as a starting point, then check actual stream health. YouTube also lists AAC or MP3 for audio and recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport. YouTube transcodes incoming streams for viewer playback.
Set the resolution and frame rate under Settings → Video to the profile you intend to test. If CPU load is consistently high, frames are skipped, or the stream health deteriorates, reduce the frame rate, resolution, or encoding complexity, or move to a shape that performs better under your real workload. Do not assume that changing the bitrate alone fixes an overloaded encoder.

Estimate network capacity and test before relying on the stream
YouTube says the total outgoing stream bitrate cannot exceed available upload bandwidth and recommends 20% extra upload capacity over the stream bitrate. For example, a 10 Mbps output implies planning for at least 12 Mbps of sustained available upload under that recommendation. That arithmetic is not a guarantee of capacity in a particular OCI region or along a particular route; test from the VM under representative conditions.
- Start a private or unlisted test stream with representative motion and audio, not just a static scene.
- Check the Live Control Room preview and stream health indicators while OBS is sending. Confirm audio and video are both present.
- Open the watch page as a viewer to verify the public playback path, then monitor for dropped frames, audio problems, or interruptions.
- For a scheduled broadcast, YouTube advises starting the encoder at least 15 minutes before the event. Keep monitoring audio and video during the broadcast rather than treating a successful start as proof of continued health.
Plan for process failure and restarts
A VM being in the running state only tells you that the instance is powered on; it does not confirm that OBS is running, connected to YouTube, or producing healthy audio and video. Before using the setup continuously, test what happens after an OBS exit, a VM reboot, an SSH disconnect, and a network interruption.
- Choose a supported way to launch OBS in the validated display/session environment when the VM starts.
- Use process supervision appropriate to that environment so you can detect and recover from an OBS process exit. Test the restart behavior rather than assuming it works.
- Check the YouTube Live Control Room after a restart or interruption. Confirm that OBS reconnects and the stream resumes; a restarted process may require a fresh session or other recovery action.
- Decide how you will notice a failure when nobody is watching the terminal. Monitoring and recovery remain your responsibility with a self-managed VM.
Troubleshoot the common failure points
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| OBS will not launch over SSH | No usable display/session, or a missing dependency | Confirm that the selected headless display/session method is active and that OBS was installed for the VM’s exact OS release. |
| YouTube does not receive the stream | Wrong or reset stream key, wrong destination, or an outbound connection problem | Verify the destination and key in OBS and YouTube Studio; check outbound connectivity and relevant host or OCI egress rules. |
| Stream health is poor or frames drop | Encoder load, insufficient sustained network capacity, or both | Compare the selected encoder and output settings with CPU load and YouTube’s health indicators. Test a lower profile or a more capable shape. |
| Stream stops when the terminal closes | OBS was tied to the interactive shell or session | Validate a persistent display/session and startup/supervision arrangement; test by disconnecting SSH and checking the Live Control Room. |
| Stream fails after a VM restart | OBS did not start in the required session, or it did not reconnect | Inspect the launch and supervision setup, then verify stream recovery in YouTube rather than relying on the VM’s running status. |
| Viewers see no audio or the wrong content | Incorrect OBS source, audio routing, or media configuration | Check the OBS mixer and scene/source configuration, then repeat a representative private or unlisted test. |
