How to Install OBS on a Linode for an Always-On YouTube Stream

A practical guide to running OBS on a Linode for YouTube Live, including Linux prerequisites, installation routes, encoder settings, security, and the persistence tests an always-on stream needs.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You can run OBS Studio on a Linode and send its output to YouTube Live, but creating a virtual machine and installing OBS does not, by itself, make the stream always-on. OBS on Linux requires a graphical environment, and you still need to configure and validate a persistent session, automatic startup, and recovery after interruptions. The official setup guidance below covers the VM, OBS installation, and YouTube encoder settings; it does not provide a complete, tested headless-desktop or process-supervision recipe.

What you are building—and what “always-on” requires

A Linode is a Linux virtual machine, not a managed OBS desktop. You choose a Linux distribution and compute plan, install and configure the software, and operate the instance. OBS runs in a Linux graphical environment, encodes your video and audio, and sends the stream to YouTube Live.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

That distinction matters if you plan to close your laptop or disconnect SSH. OBS’s Linux requirements list OpenGL 3.3 and an X11 window system or Wayland. A bare SSH terminal is not a complete OBS runtime environment. You must also arrange a graphical session that stays available, OBS startup and process recovery, and a way to check the stream after network or host interruptions. The official materials cited here do not prescribe a supported persistent remote-desktop, virtual-display, or service configuration for that job, so do not treat the installation steps as a turnkey always-on setup.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

OBS also cautions that meeting its basic system requirements does not guarantee that a computer can stream or record. The required resources depend on your encoder, output settings, and scene complexity. Review OBS’s Linux system requirements before choosing a host.

Decide whether a Linode fits your stream

A cloud VM can keep the host separate from your home computer, but you take on Linux administration and the extra work of maintaining OBS’s graphical runtime. You also need a stable outbound route to YouTube and a plan suited to the actual encoding workload. A local always-on computer avoids setting up a remote Linux desktop, but it depends on your local power, network, and hardware staying available. Compare the ongoing host cost and administration with those trade-offs before migrating a stream.

Akamai describes Accelerated plans as intended for workloads including video processing and live streaming, and GPU Linodes as suitable for video encoding. Those descriptions do not establish that either plan type—or any particular standard plan—is necessary for your OBS scene. Match the CPU or compatible hardware encoder, resolution, frame rate, codec, scene complexity, outbound bandwidth, region, and expected operating hours to your workload. Check current regional capacity, bandwidth terms, and prices directly with Akamai before committing.

As of the Akamai plan pages accessed on October 3, 2026, its Accelerated-plan page reported VPU availability temporarily at full capacity across all regions and listed a starting price of $280 per month ($0.42 per hour). Its GPU page listed RTX PRO 6000 starting at $1,665 per month ($2.50 per hour), alongside RTX 4000 Ada and Quadro RTX 6000 options with differing resources and regional availability. These are volatile source-published figures, not a recommendation or evidence that a GPU is required for a simple stream. See Akamai’s compute-plan guidance and GPU Linode details for current availability and terms.

Create and secure the Linode

  1. Choose a supported Linux distribution and region. Create the instance in Akamai Cloud Manager, or use its CLI or API. Available distributions, plans, and regional capacity can vary. Start with a plan you can evaluate against the intended encoder and stream profile rather than assuming any VM will work. Akamai’s Linodes overview explains the instance concept and deployment choices.
  2. Set up SSH access and a limited user. Use SSH keys where practical, create a non-root account for routine administration, and reserve root privileges for tasks that require them. Akamai notes that root has unlimited privileges; avoid using it for everyday work.
  3. Update the operating system and restrict access. Apply system updates, configure the local firewall to allow only the network access you need, and protect remote desktop access with appropriate controls rather than exposing it indiscriminately. Follow Akamai’s Linode setup and security guidance for the current distribution-specific steps.
  4. Confirm the instance can support the intended graphical and encoding workload. Check OpenGL 3.3 support and arrange an X11 or Wayland environment for OBS. Separately verify that the chosen encoder can handle the output profile and scene. OBS’s baseline requirements alone are not proof that the selected plan can encode your stream.

Install OBS for the chosen Linux distribution

OBS’s official Linux installation page, dated August 26, 2021, gives an Ubuntu PPA/apt route for Ubuntu 18.04 or newer and recommends Flathub for non-Ubuntu distributions. Because package instructions and distribution support can change, check the current OBS page and your target distribution before running commands.

Configure YouTube Live and OBS

  1. Prepare the YouTube live stream. In YouTube Live Control Room, create or select the stream and retrieve its stream key. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it, include it in screenshots, or place it in a public script or log. Enter it only in OBS’s streaming settings. Use YouTube’s current Live Control Room workflow and confirm the stream is ready to receive an encoder feed.
  2. Choose the server protocol. YouTube recommends RTMPS, the secure extension to RTMP. Select the corresponding server URL and protocol in OBS where available, and use the stream key associated with that YouTube stream.
  3. Set a profile that the encoder and connection can sustain. YouTube’s guidance supports H.264, H.265, or AV1 video, up to 60 fps. Its recommended bitrate depends on the codec, resolution, and frame rate; consult the current table rather than applying one bitrate to every profile. For H.264, YouTube lists 6 Mbps for 720p at 30 fps, 8 Mbps for 720p at 60 fps, 10 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps, and 17 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps. These are YouTube’s recommended encoder bitrates, not a guarantee of Linode upload capacity.
  4. Use the recommended rate-control and keyframe settings. YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a 2-second keyframe interval; do not exceed 4 seconds. Set these consistently in OBS and confirm the chosen codec and output mode match the YouTube guidance for that profile.
  5. Set audio deliberately. YouTube lists stereo audio at 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps. Its 5.1 surround recommendation is 48 kHz and 384 kbps and is supported only with AAC over RTMP/RTMPS. Use the audio format that matches your content and stream path.
  6. Keep bandwidth headroom. The video bitrate is not the whole connection requirement: audio and network variation also matter. Google recommends running a speed test to check upload bitrate. Test the actual route from the Linode to YouTube’s ingest service rather than assuming a plan’s advertised network capacity will equal sustained available upload.

For the full current encoder table and protocol guidance, use YouTube’s live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

Make the setup persistent, then test it before relying on it

The most important unresolved part of an OBS-on-Linode build is persistence. OBS needs its graphical prerequisites, but the official OBS and Akamai pages cited here do not specify a supported recipe for keeping a remote graphical session alive, launching OBS automatically, or supervising it after a crash or host restart. Choose and validate those parts for your Linux distribution and desktop stack; do not infer that leaving an SSH session open is a reliable supervision method.

  1. Test with representative content. Run the intended resolution, frame rate, encoder, audio, and scene complexity. YouTube advises testing representative audio and motion, checking stream health, and reading any messages shown during the stream. OBS also recommends a test before a first live stream. See the OBS Studio overview guide.
  2. Watch both ends of the pipeline. Check OBS for encoding or dropped-frame warnings, then confirm the incoming stream and health indicators in YouTube Live Control Room. A successful OBS preview alone does not establish that viewers receive a healthy stream.
  3. Test loss of your own connection. Disconnect SSH or your remote desktop in a controlled test. Confirm OBS continues running and YouTube remains healthy. Reconnecting to a VM is not the same as verifying that its graphical session and stream persisted.
  4. Test interruption and reboot recovery. In a planned maintenance window, test what happens if OBS exits, the network is interrupted, or the VM reboots. Confirm the process returns as intended and the YouTube stream becomes healthy again before calling the setup always-on. The collected official setup pages do not guarantee that OBS reconnects or restarts automatically on this configuration.
  5. Establish monitoring and recovery ownership. Decide who checks YouTube stream health, responds to alerts or failures, applies system updates, and verifies the stream after maintenance. An unattended stream still needs an operational recovery plan.

Troubleshoot common failure points

  • OBS will not open, or reports display/graphics problems: verify that a graphical X11 or Wayland session is actually available and that the system meets OBS’s OpenGL 3.3 requirement. A shell login alone does not supply that environment.
  • The stream starts but encoding overloads or frames are missed: reduce scene complexity, resolution, or frame rate and retest, or assess a suitable encoder and compute plan. Basic OBS requirements do not guarantee that a particular Linode can handle your workload.
  • YouTube reports a bitrate or connection issue: compare the OBS output profile with YouTube’s current codec-specific recommendations, retain bandwidth headroom, and test the Linode-to-ingest path. A recommended encoder bitrate is not a network-capacity guarantee.
  • YouTube does not receive the stream: check the selected server/protocol, confirm the correct stream key is entered privately in OBS, and verify the stream’s state in Live Control Room. If the key may have been exposed, replace it in YouTube and update OBS.
  • The stream stops after closing SSH or a reboot: the graphical session, OBS startup, or process recovery is not configured or validated for persistence. Revisit those design choices and repeat the disconnect and reboot tests; do not assume the VM alone restarts the stream.
  • Content triggers a rights or policy concern: use material you have the rights to stream and check YouTube’s current rules before broadcasting. A stream that technically connects can still face restrictions if its content is not permitted.

Or let it run in the cloud

If maintaining a Linux graphical session and recovery setup is more work than you want, StreamNeo is a cloud service for keeping a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops the uploaded video from the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. It is for uploaded videos, not a live camera feed, and streams to YouTube.

  • Each slot streams the video as uploaded, up to 4K at 60 fps, at one flat price per slot with no re-encoding or quality tiers.
  • It includes 24/7 looping and playlists, 10 GB of storage per slot pooled across active slots, and automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream.
  • The first day is free with no card required, one free day per account. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month; shorter and longer billing options are available, and you can cancel any time.

Start your free StreamNeo day to upload a video, add your YouTube stream key, and go live.
