NGINX RTMP does not loop a video file by itself. For a YouTube loop stream, use FFmpeg to read and publish the prerecorded video; add the third-party nginx-rtmp-module only if you need an RTMP ingest or relay layer between FFmpeg and YouTube. YouTube provides the ingest URL and stream key in Live Control Room. The module’s upstream documentation describes building it into NGINX, but a current, tested Open Source installation recipe for Ubuntu 22.04—and a verified endless-loop command—are not established here. Treat the setup below as an architecture and configuration guide, and validate the specific build and loop behavior before relying on it for a continuous broadcast.
Choose the right setup for the stream
For a simple prerecorded-video stream to YouTube, FFmpeg is the part that reads the file and sends the encoded stream. NGINX RTMP is optional: it can accept an RTMP stream or relay one onward, but it is not the media-file looping encoder. The nginx-rtmp-module project README documents RTMP server and relay features, recording, H.264/AAC support, and FFmpeg integration.

- Direct FFmpeg to YouTube: fewer components to configure if you do not need an intermediate RTMP endpoint.
- FFmpeg to NGINX RTMP to YouTube: useful when you specifically need NGINX to accept or relay RTMP. It adds another service and another point to diagnose.
This guide covers the NGINX RTMP route because it is the subject of the installation question. The cited material does not establish a tested, robust infinite-loop command, timestamp handling, reconnection policy, or server sizing. Do not treat a sample configuration as proof of uninterrupted operation.
Choose an installation route on Ubuntu 22.04
Open Source NGINX with the module built from source
The module README’s documented integration route is to obtain the NGINX and module sources, then build NGINX with the module using ./configure --add-module=/path/to/nginx-rtmp-module, followed by make and make install. This is the Open Source source-build approach; it is not a ready-made Ubuntu 22.04 package installation command.

Before building, match the NGINX and module revisions. If replacing or rebuilding an existing NGINX installation, preserve the configure options needed for its existing features, and check which binary and configuration path your service uses. Validate the installed binary and configuration before switching production traffic. These are prudent safeguards, not a verified build recipe for a particular current Ubuntu package combination.
Do not confuse the NGINX Plus package with Open Source NGINX
NGINX’s documented RTMP dynamic-module procedure is for NGINX Plus: it installs nginx-plus-module-rtmp from the NGINX Plus repository, enables the module with a top-level load_module directive, checks configuration with nginx -t, and reloads NGINX. It is not the Open Source Ubuntu package path, and it should not be applied to an Open Source installation as though the packages were interchangeable.
Treat old Jammy build instructions as historical, not current validation
A community wiki page labeled for Ubuntu 22.04.1 describes a source build pinned to NGINX 1.23.1 and older dependencies. It shows that a Jammy build has been documented, but does not establish a currently supported Open Source package name, current module compatibility, or a contemporary tested build combination. See the Ubuntu 22.04.1 community build page for its stated version context; do not assume it is a current installation recipe.

Configure NGINX RTMP as an ingest or relay
The module README’s example places an rtmp {} block at the top level of the NGINX configuration, listens on port 1935, and defines an application with live on;. It also documents a push directive for relaying to another RTMP host and FFmpeg execution examples. Consult the upstream module README for syntax and examples that fit your build.
Those examples are not a security-reviewed public-server configuration. Restrict who can publish to the RTMP application, expose only ports you need, and test changes against the actual NGINX binary and configuration in use. The exact access-control directives and a complete hardened public deployment are not established by the cited material.
Keep the YouTube stream key secret
YouTube describes stream keys as password-like. Keep the key out of public configuration repositories, screenshots, and command history; protect any file that contains it. If it is exposed, a channel owner or manager can reset the key in Live Control Room. See YouTube’s instructions for setting up a live encoder and managing stream keys.

Connect FFmpeg, NGINX, and YouTube
- Decide whether NGINX is needed. If you use it, configure the module’s RTMP application as the ingest or relay point, then verify the configuration with the NGINX binary you built. For NGINX Plus, follow its own dynamic-module procedure rather than Open Source build instructions.
- Get the YouTube endpoint and key. In YouTube Live Control Room, obtain the server URL and stream key for the intended stream. YouTube’s encoder workflow is to enter these values in the encoder, start sending, and complete the Live Control Room workflow as appropriate.
- Make FFmpeg the media sender. Configure it to read your prerecorded file and publish to the chosen ingest path. If routing through NGINX, point FFmpeg at the NGINX RTMP application and configure the relay toward YouTube; if sending directly, use the YouTube endpoint. Confirm that your selected FFmpeg and NGINX builds support the transport you choose.
- Test before scheduling a long run. Check that the stream appears in Live Control Room, audio and video play correctly, and timestamps remain acceptable at file-loop boundaries. YouTube explicitly advises: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.”
- Plan process recovery separately. The module examples do not establish an endless-loop command, automatic reconnect behavior, or service supervision policy. Verify those behaviors with your installed FFmpeg version and media, and configure an appropriate process manager if your implementation requires restart handling.
Select YouTube-compatible transport and encoder settings
YouTube’s current encoder guidance, accessed in 2026, lists RTMP and RTMPS transport; H.264, H.265 (HEVC), or AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; frame rates up to 60 fps; constant bitrate (CBR); and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. YouTube recommends RTMPS, which is RTMP carried over TLS/SSL. It provides the RTMPS URL in Live Control Room; confirm that the particular FFmpeg and NGINX build can use the selected route before relying on it.

For stereo audio, YouTube recommends a 44.1 kHz sample rate and 128 Kbps bitrate. Its advanced guidance also includes square pixels, progressive scan, two B-frames, one reference frame, CABAC, and Rec. 709 for SDR. Match the encode to the source and sustained upload capacity rather than assuming a higher setting will improve a lower-quality source.

YouTube advises selecting a reliable quality setting for the connection and recommends an upload speed test. The published bitrate figures do not specify the CPU or memory required to encode a particular source.
Check YouTube’s rules for the content you loop
A technically stable stream does not establish that you have permission to broadcast its contents or that a channel meets YouTube’s monetization policies. Use recordings you own or have permission to stream, and check YouTube’s requirements for copyrighted material and reused content before building a channel around repeated prerecorded broadcasts. The sources cited here establish stream setup and encoder guidance, not a legal determination or a channel-specific policy outcome; review the applicable YouTube policies for your content and account.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Troubleshoot the setup by symptom
- NGINX rejects the configuration: verify that the RTMP module is present in the binary you are running, that the
rtmp {}block is at the top level, and that the configuration matches the chosen Open Source or NGINX Plus installation route. Runnginx -tusing the correct binary and configuration path before reloading. - FFmpeg cannot publish to the NGINX endpoint: check that NGINX is listening on the intended address and port, that the application name matches the configured RTMP application, and that network rules permit the connection.
- YouTube does not receive the stream: re-check the Live Control Room server URL and stream key, confirm that the key has not been reset, and verify that the selected transport is supported by your installed toolchain. Do not expose the key while troubleshooting.
- The stream starts but breaks at a loop boundary: inspect the selected file’s audio/video timestamps and test repeated playback with the exact FFmpeg version and command you deploy. Loop-boundary timestamp behavior is not established by the module examples.
- The stream is unstable despite a successful connection: compare the chosen bitrate with sustained upload capacity, test at the intended resolution and frame rate, and check that the host can encode the source at that profile. No server sizing or uptime benchmark is established here.
- The stream stops after a disconnect: confirm whether your FFmpeg process exits or retries and whether a process manager restarts it. Automatic recovery is not implied by the NGINX module’s sample configuration.
Or let it run in the cloud
