The reliable installation path is to update the system, install the nginx RPM with dnf, enable the systemd service, open HTTP/HTTPS in firewalld when it is active, and test both locally and from another machine. On Rocky Linux and AlmaLinux, start with the distribution package. If no package is available, or you need vendor-controlled stable or mainline packages, configure the official NGINX repository instead.
Antihost offers Linux VPS plans with full root access, unlimited traffic on a 1 Gbps port and a 14-day free trial.
This guide covers both choices, service management, firewall access, the first server block, repository and GPG checks, and the failure modes that make Nginx appear to work locally while remaining unreachable remotely.

Before you install
Rocky Linux and AlmaLinux are RHEL derivatives supported by NGINX package instructions. The installable unit is the nginx RPM, and dnf is the normal package manager; systems that still expose the yum command generally map it to the same package-management stack.
- Use a supported Rocky Linux or AlmaLinux major release and verify the architecture before adding a repository.
- Have an account allowed to run
sudo. Every command below assumes that privilege. - Make sure the server can resolve package mirrors and reach them over the network.
- Keep SELinux enforcing unless a documented policy change is required for a specific application. Disabling it is not an installation fix.
- Know whether firewalld is active. A running service is not automatically reachable from another host if the firewall blocks TCP ports 80 and 443.
Check the operating-system identity and package-manager state first:

cat /etc/os-release
sudo dnf repolist
The first command confirms that you are on Rocky Linux or AlmaLinux. The second shows enabled repositories and often explains why a package cannot be found.
Choose the package source
You have two sensible installation sources. The distribution stream is usually the simplest operational choice. The official NGINX repository gives direct control over the vendor stable or mainline stream, but it adds repository configuration and key-verification work.
Recommended Free Tools
| Consideration | Distribution AppStream or enabled distribution repositories | Official NGINX repository |
|---|---|---|
| Package freshness | Follows the versions and update cadence selected by Rocky Linux or AlmaLinux. | Tracks NGINX vendor packages and lets you select the stable stream or opt in to mainline. |
| Setup effort | Lowest configuration: install the RPM with dnf. |
Requires creating /etc/yum.repos.d/nginx.repo, checking repository variables, and accepting a verified signing key. |
| Signing and update source | Packages come through the enabled operating-system repositories. | Packages come from NGINX’s repository; retain GPG checking and verify the signing-key fingerprint shown on the official package instructions. |
| Compatibility | Aligned with the operating system’s module and AppStream choices. | Provides the vendor’s stable stream by default and a separately selected mainline stream; confirm support for your OS major version and architecture. |
| Operational support | Fits the distribution’s normal lifecycle and administration practices. | Useful when you specifically need the vendor stream, but your team must own repository-file and key maintenance. |
Do not choose a stream solely because its name sounds newer. Stable is the default in the official repository; mainline is an opt-in choice. Select the stream that matches your change policy, module compatibility requirements, and support expectations.
Install the distribution package
1. Refresh packages and metadata
Update the package metadata and installed packages before installing Nginx:
sudo dnf update -y
On a production host, review the transaction and reboot policy that your organization uses. The command can update more than Nginx, so schedule it according to your maintenance process rather than treating it as an isolated web-server action.
2. Install Nginx
sudo dnf install nginx -y
The package manager resolves the RPM and its dependencies, installs the systemd unit, and creates the standard Nginx configuration tree. Installation alone does not guarantee that the daemon is running or that a remote client can connect.

3. Start the service and enable it at boot
sudo systemctl enable --now nginx
The first command both enables the unit for future boots and starts it immediately. The status command should show an active running service. If it reports a failure, continue with the syntax and journal checks below rather than repeatedly restarting it.
4. Validate the configuration
sudo nginx -t
A successful test reports that the configuration syntax is OK and the test is successful. Run this check before every reload or after editing any file under /etc/nginx. It catches malformed directives and many include-path mistakes without interrupting a currently running process.
If dnf says no Nginx package is available
A missing package usually means that the enabled repositories do not expose Nginx for your OS release, metadata is stale, or a repository configuration is incomplete. NGINX's installation guidance documents an EPEL-assisted retry:
- Install the EPEL release package:
sudo dnf install epel-release -y. - Clean cached metadata:
sudo dnf clean all. - Refresh repository metadata:
sudo dnf makecache. - Retry the installation:
sudo dnf install nginx -y.
If the package still cannot be found, inspect sudo dnf repolist and the output from sudo dnf makecache. Confirm that the repository supports your exact Rocky Linux or AlmaLinux major release and CPU architecture. Do not solve a repository problem by downloading an unrelated RPM from an arbitrary mirror.

Use this route when you need the vendor's package stream, when the distribution repositories do not provide the package, or when your update policy requires a direct stable/mainline choice. The repository instructions use release variables, so select values that match the installed OS major version and architecture.
1. Obtain the repository stanza
Open the official NGINX package instructions and select the Linux release that matches Rocky Linux or AlmaLinux. Choose the stable repository unless you have a defined reason to use mainline. The page supplies the repository stanza and signing-key details; do not substitute a guessed URL or remove its GPG settings.

2. Create the repository file
sudo vi /etc/yum.repos.d/nginx.repo
Paste the stable repository definition supplied for your release into that file. Keep gpgcheck=1 enabled, and preserve the repository's GPG key declaration. If you intentionally select mainline, use the mainline stanza from the same official instructions rather than enabling both streams casually.
3. Verify the signing key before accepting it
When dnf asks to import a key, compare the displayed fingerprint with the fingerprint published in the official NGINX package instructions. Accept the key only when the values match. A repository that works technically but has an unverified key is not a safe installation.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

4. Refresh metadata and install
sudo dnf clean all
sudo dnf makecache
sudo dnf install nginx -y
Then use the same systemd and syntax checks as with the distribution package:
sudo systemctl enable --now nginx
sudo systemctl status nginx
sudo nginx -t
Do not mix repositories without a plan. Switching sources later can change update behavior and dependency resolution. Record which stream and repository you selected so future administrators know where updates originate.
Open web traffic in firewalld
AlmaLinux documentation notes that firewalld is enabled by default in its examples. Rocky Linux installations may also have it active, depending on the image and provisioning choices. Check before changing rules:
sudo systemctl is-active firewalld
If the result is active, allow the standard web services permanently and reload the firewall:

sudo firewall-cmd --permanent --add-service={http,https}
sudo firewall-cmd --reload
Verify the resulting zone configuration:
sudo firewall-cmd --list-services
These rules permit TCP HTTP and HTTPS through firewalld. They do not create TLS certificates, configure a virtual host, or open a cloud provider's security group. If the server is hosted remotely, check that any upstream network ACL or provider firewall also permits the same ports.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Test Nginx locally and remotely
Local request
From the server itself, request only the response headers:
curl -I http://127.0.0.1/
A response proves that a process is listening on the loopback interface and can serve the default configuration. It does not prove that the service is bound to the external address or permitted through the firewall.
Remote request
From a different machine, use the server's reachable address:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
curl -I http://SERVER_ADDRESS/
Replace SERVER_ADDRESS with the host name or IP address that the client should use. If localhost succeeds but this request times out, investigate firewalld, upstream network rules, routing, and the address on which Nginx is listening. If it returns an HTTP error quickly, the network path works and the remaining issue is likely configuration or content.
Inspect listeners and service logs
sudo ss -ltnp | grep nginx
sudo journalctl -u nginx --no-pager -n 100
The listener check shows whether Nginx has bound to the expected TCP ports. The journal provides startup and reload errors, permission failures, and other systemd-level diagnostics. Combine those results with sudo systemctl status nginx rather than relying on a browser's generic error page.
Best Value
Add a server block
Additional virtual-host configuration belongs in /etc/nginx/conf.d/; Rocky Linux's guide shows the standard /etc/nginx/conf.d/*.conf include path. Create a separate file for each site so that a syntax error or later change is easy to isolate.
sudo vi /etc/nginx/conf.d/example.conf
A minimal HTTP server block has a listen address, a server name, and a document root. Use a directory that exists and has content your deployment intends to publish. The exact domain and filesystem path are application decisions, so do not copy a placeholder into production without replacing them.
server {
listen 80;
server_name example.test;
root /var/www/example;
index index.html;
}
Create the document root and a test page only if that matches your deployment plan. Ensure the Nginx worker can read the files under the active SELinux policy. Then test and reload without stopping the service:
sudo nginx -t
sudo systemctl reload nginx
Reload applies a valid configuration to new workers while allowing existing connections to finish. If nginx -t fails, fix the reported file and line before attempting another reload.
Troubleshoot the common failure modes
The package is unavailable
- Run
sudo dnf repolistand confirm the expected repositories are enabled. - Run
sudo dnf clean allfollowed bysudo dnf makecacheto discard stale metadata. - Install
epel-releaseand retry when following the EPEL-assisted path documented for this situation. - If using the vendor repository, check that its release variable matches the OS major version and architecture.
The service fails immediately after installation
- Run
sudo nginx -tto identify syntax or include errors. - Read
sudo systemctl status nginxfor the immediate systemd result. - Read
sudo journalctl -u nginxfor the detailed startup message. - Check whether another process already occupies the configured port.
Local curl works, but remote clients time out
- Check firewalld with
sudo systemctl is-active firewalld. - Allow the
httpandhttpsservices permanently and reload firewalld. - Check upstream cloud or datacenter firewall rules and network ACLs.
- Use
sudo ss -ltnpto verify that Nginx is listening on the expected address and port.
Remote clients receive the wrong site
Confirm that the request's host name matches the server_name in the intended server block and that the file is under /etc/nginx/conf.d/. Run sudo nginx -t, reload, and test with a request that supplies the expected host name. A default server block can answer when no configured name matches.
Nginx cannot read the document root
Check ordinary Unix ownership and mode bits first, then check SELinux labels and denials. Keep SELinux enforcing; apply a documented, least-privilege labeling or policy correction for the content rather than disabling the protection globally.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsOperate and update the installation safely
Use systemd for lifecycle operations:
sudo systemctl start nginx
sudo systemctl stop nginx
sudo systemctl restart nginx
sudo systemctl reload nginx
sudo systemctl status nginx
Prefer a reload after a configuration change because it avoids an unnecessary interruption when the configuration is valid. Always run sudo nginx -t before that reload. For routine updates, use the same repository source you selected during installation and review the transaction before confirming it. Stable is the default stream in the official repository; mainline requires an explicit choice and should be introduced only when its change cadence fits your testing and rollback process.
NGINX open source packages and NGINX Plus are different products. NGINX Plus is a separately licensed commercial product with its own repository and licensing steps; installing the open-source nginx RPM does not provide Plus features.
A repeatable installation checklist
- Confirm Rocky Linux or AlmaLinux and the OS major version with
cat /etc/os-release. - Update metadata and packages with
sudo dnf update -y. - Install
nginxfrom the distribution repositories, or configure the verified official stable repository when that is the deliberate choice. - Enable and start the daemon with
sudo systemctl enable --now nginx. - Validate syntax using
sudo nginx -t. - Check service state and logs with
sudo systemctl status nginxandsudo journalctl -u nginx. - Allow HTTP and HTTPS in firewalld when it is active.
- Test with
curl -I http://127.0.0.1/, then test from a remote machine. - Place site-specific files in
/etc/nginx/conf.d/, test again, and reload. - Document the package source, selected update stream, and any firewall or SELinux policy changes for the next administrator.
The Bottom Line
For most Rocky Linux and AlmaLinux hosts, install the distribution nginx RPM with dnf, enable it with systemd, open firewalld's HTTP/HTTPS services when needed, and verify locally and remotely. Use the official NGINX repository when you need its stable or mainline stream, and keep its GPG verification and OS-version matching intact.
