Install MPC-HC from the official project release page, choose the stable build, and run its Windows installer. Then open Settings > Apps > Default apps and assign MPC-HC to each video extension you want it to open. Windows manages associations by file type, so there is no universal switch that necessarily claims every format in one step.
What MPC-HC is and which release to choose
MPC-HC (Media Player Classic – Home Cinema) is a free, open-source audio and video player for Windows. The project supports Windows 7, 8, 8.1, 10 and 11, although the instructions below use the Windows 11 interface also documented by Microsoft.

At the time of the project’s release listing reviewed on October 13, 2026, the current stable release was 2.8.3, published October 8, 2026. Its notes list MPC Video Renderer 0.10.8.2600, MediaInfo DLL 26.10, a Windows 11-style options and menu theme, and additional stability and small fixes. The same page lists a development build dated October 12, 2026. Choose the stable release for normal use; development builds are pre-release software intended for testing rather than a routine installation.

Before you begin
MPC-HC itself is free software, so completing this setup does not require a purchase or physical media. You need a Windows computer and permission to install software. Decide which file types you actually want MPC-HC to open before changing defaults. Many people need only common containers such as .mp4 and .mkv; others may also use .avi, .mov, .wmv, .webm, .ts or .m2ts.
Close any video currently playing while you install or update the player. Keep the official release page open so you can distinguish the stable listing from the separately labeled development build. Do not rely on an old screenshot or a filename copied from another guide, because release assets and labels can change.
Choose an installation route
There are two documented ways to install MPC-HC. The standalone installer is the simplest route. The project also points users to the optional K-Lite Codec Pack, which bundles MPC-HC with other components and exposes more setup choices.
Recommended Free Tools
| Route | What it includes | Setup and associations | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standalone MPC-HC installer | MPC-HC and its normal installation files | The project describes the installer as basic. You make default-app choices in Windows afterward. | Readers who want only the player and a short installation. |
| K-Lite Codec Pack | MPC-HC plus additional codec and playback components | Offers extra configuration and can create file associations during setup. | Readers who want a bundled, more configurable installation. |
The project says the K-Lite Standard edition should be sufficient for most people. It identifies the Full edition as the option for users who specifically want madVR. K-Lite is optional; MPC-HC does not require it for the standalone installation.
The practical trade-off is control versus simplicity. The standalone route leaves Windows associations for a separate, deliberate step and installs fewer bundled components. K-Lite can expose association choices while its wizard is running and offers more configuration, but you must read those pages carefully and avoid selecting formats you do not intend to change.
Install MPC-HC with the standalone installer
- Open the official release page. Locate the release marked stable rather than the separately listed development build.
- Select the appropriate release asset. Download the installer asset offered for your Windows system. The project’s release page is the authority for the current asset names and available builds; do not substitute a mirror or an unofficial repack.
- Run the downloaded installer. Open it from your browser’s download list or the folder where Windows saved it. If Windows displays a security confirmation, verify that you intentionally downloaded the file from the official project page before continuing.
- Follow the installer prompts. The standalone wizard is intentionally basic. Accept the license and installation prompts, review any destination or shortcut choices shown by the version you downloaded, and allow setup to complete.
- Launch MPC-HC. Start it from the Windows Start menu or the shortcut created by setup. The player can be used immediately; assigning file extensions is a separate Windows task described below.
The release page can change its asset labels or architecture choices over time. Use the labels shown for the release you are installing instead of relying on an old screenshot or a filename copied from another guide.
At this stage, do not worry about renderer tuning, decoder overrides or HDR options. The default installation is enough to test whether the application launches. Advanced playback configuration is separate from making MPC-HC the default app.

Install through K-Lite Codec Pack instead
Choose this path only if you want the bundled components and additional configuration that the project associates with K-Lite. It is not a prerequisite for MPC-HC.
- Obtain the current K-Lite Codec Pack installer from the package source linked by the MPC-HC project documentation, and select the Standard edition unless you have a specific reason to use Full.
- Run the package installer and read each setup page. Unlike the basic standalone installer, this route presents more component and playback options.
- When the wizard offers file-association choices, select the video types you want MPC-HC to handle. Association screens can differ between package versions, so confirm the actual extensions listed rather than assuming every format is selected.
- Complete setup and open one of your video files. If a type was not associated, use Windows Default apps to assign it individually.
Select the Full edition only when you need the package’s madVR option. The project’s recommendation of Standard for most users is a configuration guideline, not a requirement for ordinary MPC-HC playback.
Set MPC-HC as the default player in Windows 11
Windows stores defaults by file extension and by other supported link or media types. Install MPC-HC before changing these settings so Windows can register the application and display it as an available choice.
Assign one extension from Default apps
- Open Settings from the Start menu.
- Select Apps, then Default apps.
- In the search box, enter the extension you want to change, such as
.mp4, or select an app to inspect its supported types. - Select the current application shown beside that extension.
- Choose MPC-HC from the list of available applications, then confirm the change if Windows asks.
- Repeat the process for every extension you want MPC-HC to open.
Use the extension including its leading period. For example, changing .mkv affects Matroska video files, while changing .mp4 affects MP4 files. They are separate associations even when both contain video.
If Windows shows a choice for a link or another media type, change it only when that behavior is useful to you. The app page and the extension search expose only the associations that Windows and the installed MPC-HC registration make available.
Assign several types from the MPC-HC app entry
- Return to Settings > Apps > Default apps.
- Search for MPC-HC and open its app entry.
- Review the file and link types Windows lists for that installation.
- Select each type you want to change and choose MPC-HC from the options Windows presents.
This view can be faster when you already know the formats you use, but Windows still applies each selection to an individual type. The list is limited to associations that Windows and the installed application expose. Selecting MPC-HC in the app list does not guarantee that every video extension on the computer changes automatically.
Which video extensions should you assign?
Assign only the types you actually want MPC-HC to handle. A practical checklist is below; the available list on your computer may be shorter or include additional types.

| Extension or media type | Why you might assign it | Decision |
|---|---|---|
.mp4 |
Common container for downloaded, recorded and camera video. | Assign if you want MPC-HC for everyday MP4 playback. |
.mkv |
Frequently used for high-quality video, multiple audio tracks and subtitles. | Assign if you keep Matroska files. |
.avi |
Older and legacy video collections may use this container. | Assign only if you still open AVI files. |
.mov |
Often used by cameras and editing applications. | Assign if you want MPC-HC to open your MOV files. |
.wmv |
Windows Media Video files. | Assign if they are part of your library. |
.webm |
Web-oriented video files. | Assign when you open WebM files locally. |
.ts, .m2ts |
Transport-stream files from broadcasts, cameras or disc workflows. | Assign only when those files are in your collection. |
The extension alone does not describe every codec inside a file. MPC-HC documentation lists support for formats and technologies including HEVC/H.265, VVC/H.266, AV1 and AC4, as well as subtitles, playback-speed controls and resume position. Whether a particular file plays also depends on its stream details and your system configuration.
Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallCrashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteFor example, assigning .mkv tells Windows which application to launch; it does not convert the file or guarantee that every stream inside it is identical. Test a representative file from each important group, especially if your collection includes unusual audio, subtitle or video streams.
Use “Open with” when an extension is missing
If MPC-HC does not appear in Default apps for a type, do not assume that a registry edit is required or supported. Microsoft also documents a per-file method:
- Right-click a video file in File Explorer.
- Choose Open with, then select Choose another app if necessary.
- Select MPC-HC from the available applications.
- Enable the option to always use that app for this type when Windows displays it, then confirm.
After installing MPC-HC, return to Default apps and search the extension again. If Windows still does not offer MPC-HC, check the project’s current guidance for that release rather than applying an unverified registry workaround.
Confirm that the association worked
Test from File Explorer
Open a file whose extension you changed. It should launch MPC-HC without asking you to choose an application. Test one file per extension because an association for .mp4 does not prove that .mkv or .mov was changed.
Check the icon and context menu
Windows may refresh file icons slowly. The icon is a useful hint, but opening the file is the definitive check. If the old player remains in the context menu, that does not necessarily mean the default failed; verify the app shown in Default apps and test the file.
Check a file that contains subtitles or multiple tracks
For formats that use multiple audio, subtitle or video streams, open a representative file and inspect MPC-HC’s playback controls. This confirms that the association launches MPC-HC for the file you care about, rather than merely changing an icon. MPC-HC also documents subtitle support, playback-speed controls and resume position, which can be useful when checking a real library file.

Troubleshoot common problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| MPC-HC is not listed in Default apps. | The player was not installed, Windows has not registered it yet, or that type is not exposed by the installation. | Install or repair MPC-HC, restart Settings, search the extension again, and try Open with on a real file. |
| One extension opens in MPC-HC but another still uses a different player. | Associations are separate by file type. | Change the second extension explicitly under Settings > Apps > Default apps. |
| The development build was installed accidentally. | The release page lists development builds separately from stable releases. | Uninstall that build if necessary, then install the stable release identified on the official release page. Development builds are for testing. |
| A video opens but does not play correctly. | The file may use an unusual stream, unsupported configuration or a renderer/decoder setting that needs attention. | Confirm the file itself works, check MPC-HC’s documented format support, and review advanced playback settings only after basic installation and association are working. |
| Windows keeps asking which app to use. | The association was not saved for that extension, or the file has a different extension than expected. | Inspect the filename extension, then assign that exact type again in Default apps or with Open with. |
| A previous player still appears as an option. | Installed applications remain available even after another app becomes the default. | Choose MPC-HC for the specific type; you do not need to remove the other player merely to change the default. |
| K-Lite setup changed more types than intended. | The package wizard offers association choices for multiple formats. | Review the listed extensions during setup, then correct individual types in Windows Default apps. |
Renderer and advanced playback settings
MPC-HC includes MPC Video Renderer. The project describes it as the recommended and default renderer for modern systems and notes that it supports HDR video. Renderer selection, decoder configuration and HDR behavior are advanced topics; none is required to install MPC-HC or set file associations.
Start with the default configuration. Change renderer or decoder options only when you have a specific issue, such as a display problem, HDR requirement or a file that behaves differently from ordinary videos. Record the original setting before changing it so you can reverse the change if playback becomes worse. A renderer change also does not alter Windows file associations; treat playback tuning and default-app configuration as separate tasks.
Supported Windows versions and maintenance
The project lists Windows 7, 8, 8.1, 10 and 11 as supported. The steps in this guide use Microsoft’s Windows 10 and Windows 11 Default apps route. Older Windows versions use different Control Panel or file-association screens, so do not expect every label in this guide to appear unchanged there.
Release status and Windows interface labels can change. When updating MPC-HC, return to the official project release page, distinguish the stable release from development builds, and read the release notes for changes relevant to your system. Updating the player does not mean every Windows association will be reassigned automatically; check the extensions you rely on after a major reinstall or migration.
The October 8, 2026 stable release, 2.8.3, includes the updated renderer, MediaInfo DLL and Windows 11-style options and menu theme noted above. The development listing dated October 12 is separate, so do not mistake its newer date for a recommendation to use it in everyday playback.
Quick completion checklist
- MPC-HC came from the official project release page, not a mirror.
- The stable release was selected instead of the separately listed development build.
- The installer completed and MPC-HC launches from the Start menu.
- Settings > Apps > Default apps was opened after installation.
- Each desired extension was assigned individually to MPC-HC.
- At least one real file for each important extension was opened to confirm the result.
- Any missing type was handled with Open with or checked against the project’s current guidance rather than an unsupported registry edit.
- Renderer and decoder settings were left at their defaults unless a specific playback issue required further investigation.
Bottom line
Install the stable MPC-HC release with the standalone installer unless you specifically want K-Lite’s bundled components and extra setup controls. In Windows, set MPC-HC under Settings > Apps > Default apps, then repeat the assignment for every extension you want it to handle. Testing one file per extension catches the most common mistake: changing one format and assuming all video types changed with it.

Is MPC-HC free to install?
Yes. MPC-HC is free and open-source software for Windows, and no physical purchase is needed to complete the installation or set file associations.
Best Value
Should I install the stable release or the development build?
Choose the stable release for ordinary use. The project lists development builds separately as pre-release software intended for testing; the stable listing was version 2.8.3 on October 13, 2026.
Do I need K-Lite Codec Pack to use MPC-HC?
No. The standalone MPC-HC installer is sufficient. K-Lite is an optional bundled route that adds components and more setup choices; the project says its Standard edition should suit most users and identifies Full for users who specifically want madVR.
Can one Windows setting make MPC-HC the default for every video format?
Not necessarily. Windows manages defaults by file or link type. Assign each extension you want, such as .mp4, .mkv or .mov, under Settings > Apps > Default apps.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhat if MPC-HC is missing from Default apps?
Install MPC-HC first, reopen Default apps and search the extension again. You can also right-click a real video, choose Open with and select MPC-HC. Avoid unsupported registry edits, and consult the project’s current guidance if Windows still does not offer the app.
Do I need to change the renderer after installation?
No. MPC Video Renderer is included and is described by the project as the recommended/default renderer for modern systems, with HDR support. Leave advanced renderer and decoder settings alone unless you have a specific playback problem.
The Bottom Line
Download stable MPC-HC 2.8.3 from the official project page, install it, and assign each desired extension in Windows 11’s Settings > Apps > Default apps. K-Lite is optional, and development builds are for testing.
