Install a Left 4 Dead 2 server addon in the directory that matches its type: Workshop campaigns go in left4dead2/addons/workshop/, ordinary VPK campaigns and other non-Workshop content normally go in left4dead2/addons/, and server-side plugins require MetaMod:Source plus SourceMod. Download or update the dedicated server with SteamCMD application ID 222860, place files in the server’s own left4dead2 tree, restart, and verify with meta list when plugins are involved.
Prefer not to run the server on your own PC? Godlike.Host offers hosted Left 4 Dead 2 servers with free DDoS protection and up to three free backups a day.
The most common mistake is treating a client Workshop subscription or cosmetic addon as a server plugin. The procedures below separate campaign/VPK content from gameplay plugins, cover Windows, Linux, and Docker deployments, and provide checks for addons that work locally but fail on a dedicated server.

Left 4 Dead 2 has two different extension systems that are often called mods interchangeably:
- Content addons: maps, campaigns, models, sounds, textures, and other files packaged as VPK addons. Workshop campaigns are a special case with their own server directory.
- Server plugins: code that changes rules, commands, votes, spawning, administration, or other live-server behavior. These are loaded through MetaMod:Source, with SourceMod providing the common plugin framework.
A VPK can be a complete campaign, a cosmetic replacement, or another content pack. It is a digital file; it is not automatically a SourceMod plugin. Conversely, an .smx file is a SourceMod plugin and will not load merely because it is placed in the VPK addons folder.
#1 Best Overall
- On day one, Left 4 Dead 2 features more co-operative campaigns, more campaigns and maps for the versus game modes than the original Left 4 Dead did, plus support for Survival Mode right out of the box.
- Left 4 Dead 2 features quality co-op action gaming from the makers of Half-life, Portal, Team Fortress and Counter-Strike.
- Updated “AI Director 2.0" technology expands players’ ability to customize level layout, world objects, weather, and lighting to reflect different times of day, creating fresh gameplay every time.
- Put a whole slew of melee weapons including axes, chainsaws, frying pans and baseball bats to use which allow you to get up close with the zombies.
- The game features four different survivors, a new storyline and new dialog.
Always read the release notes for the specific addon. Valve’s folder rule tells you where to place content, but it does not guarantee that every addon supports dedicated servers, every game mode, or your current build.
Prepare the dedicated server before copying files
Identify the server installation
Use the server’s own left4dead2 directory, not the copy inside your personal game library. A conventional SteamCMD installation uses these paths in the documented setup:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
| Platform | Dedicated-server root | Game directory |
|---|---|---|
| Windows | C:SteamCMDsteamappscommonLeft 4 Dead 2 Dedicated Server |

| GNU/Linux | /home/steam/Steam/steamapps/common/Left 4 Dead 2 Dedicated Server |
/home/steam/Steam/steamapps/common/Left 4 Dead 2 Dedicated Server/left4dead2 |
Your root can differ if you selected another SteamCMD library. The important part is that the folders below are inside the directory from which the dedicated server runs.
Stop the server and make a backup
- Stop the server cleanly before changing addons, MetaMod, or SourceMod files.
- Back up
left4dead2/cfg/server.cfg, the completeleft4dead2/addonsdirectory, and any custom configuration or data folders supplied by plugins. - Keep a short change log. Add one campaign or plugin at a time so a parse error can be traced to the last change.
- Check the addon author’s compatibility notes, required dependencies, supported game modes, and whether clients must also install anything.
Update the game files
SteamCMD is the documented way to install and update the dedicated server. Sign in anonymously and run the update for application ID 222860. The essential SteamCMD command is:
app_update 222860
Run the update whenever Valve ships a server change and before diagnosing a plugin problem. Keep your server configuration in left4dead2/cfg/server.cfg; an update should not be used as a substitute for a backup of that file.

Workshop campaigns
Valve changed the dedicated-server behavior on 19 February 2013: Workshop campaigns should be placed in the same relative location used by the client, /left4dead2/addons/workshop/. Campaigns that were not downloaded from the Workshop can remain in the normal addons directory. Do not create a second, arbitrary “workshop” folder elsewhere in the server tree.
Non-Workshop campaigns and VPK files
For a non-Workshop campaign or ordinary VPK addon, copy the VPK to the server’s left4dead2/addons/ directory unless the release notes specify a different location. Valve describes VPK addons as files that can be installed by copying them to the Add-ons folder; on a server, that means the Add-ons folder belonging to the dedicated-server installation.
Do not unpack a VPK unless its author explicitly asks you to. If a release contains several files rather than one VPK, preserve the directory layout supplied by the author.
Install or update the dedicated server with SteamCMD
Windows
- Install SteamCMD in a location such as
C:SteamCMD. - Use SteamCMD’s anonymous login and select the library where the Left 4 Dead 2 Dedicated Server is installed.
- Run
app_update 222860and wait for completion. - Open
C:SteamCMDsteamappscommonLeft 4 Dead 2 Dedicated Serverleft4dead2. - Create or edit
cfgserver.cfgfor the server’s normal settings. - Stop SteamCMD, then install addons into the folders described above before starting the server.
GNU/Linux
- Install SteamCMD under the account that will run the server; the documented example uses
/home/steam/Steam. - Log in anonymously and run
app_update 222860. - Change to
/home/steam/Steam/steamapps/common/Left 4 Dead 2 Dedicated Server/left4dead2when checking or copying files. - Store settings in
cfg/server.cfgand ensure the account running the server can read the addon files. - Restart the server after copying content or installing server plugins.
The server should be launched from its left4dead2 game directory, as in the documented SteamCMD setup. Use the launch script or service definition appropriate to your operating system and existing deployment; the addon paths do not change.

Install MetaMod:Source and SourceMod
MetaMod:Source is the loader for server plugins. SourceMod runs as a plugin/framework on top of it. Installing only SourceMod is not enough.
- Download stable builds. Obtain a stable MetaMod:Source build and a compatible stable SourceMod build for the server.
- Extract MetaMod. Copy MetaMod’s
addonsfolder into the server’sleft4dead2directory, merging folders rather than nesting them one level too deep. - Generate the game-specific VDF. Use MetaMod’s VDF generator and select Left 4 Dead 2. The generated file is commonly named
metamod.vdf. - Place the VDF. Copy that L4D2-specific VDF into
left4dead2/addons/. A VDF generated for another Source game is not interchangeable. - Extract SourceMod. Merge SourceMod’s
addonsandcfgfolders into the sameleft4dead2directory. - Restart completely. Stop and start the dedicated server rather than relying on a map change for the initial loader installation.
- Verify in the server console. Run
meta versionto print the loaded MetaMod version, ormeta listto display MetaMod and loaded plugins.
If meta list is unknown, MetaMod did not load. Check that the VDF is in left4dead2/addons/, that it targets Left 4 Dead 2, and that the extracted folders were not placed inside an accidental extra directory such as left4dead2/addons/addons/.
Add SourceMod plugins safely
Understand the files in a plugin release
A normal SourceMod plugin includes an .smx binary, but a complete release may also contain configuration files, gamedata, translations, include files, or another dependency. The author’s installation instructions take precedence over a generic copy operation.
Copy the plugin and its support files
- Place the plugin’s
.smxfile inleft4dead2/addons/sourcemod/plugins/. - Copy plugin-specific configuration files to the paths named by the release, commonly under
left4dead2/cfg/sourcemod/or a plugin subdirectory. - Install required gamedata, translations, or extensions exactly where the author specifies. Do not rename files to make them fit a guessed path.
- Read the release’s cvar and dependency list before enabling the plugin on a live server.
- Restart the server, or use the plugin’s documented reload method after a safe test. Check SourceMod logs and the server console for errors.
SourceMod plugins can alter gameplay and administration. Test one at a time, use a non-public server first when possible, and retain the previous working copy so you can roll back quickly.

A Workshop cosmetic or local VPK can change what one player sees without adding any server command or gameplay logic. It will not become a server plugin when copied into addons/sourcemod/plugins/. Likewise, an .smx file is not a Workshop campaign. Install each item according to its own file type and release instructions.

Docker deployment
Docker is useful when you already operate containers and want the server process, configuration, and restart policy managed as a unit. The file layout inside the container is different from a bare-metal SteamCMD installation, but the content distinction remains the same.
Mount custom content
The Left4DevOps documentation shows a host directory containing custom addons mounted into the container at /addons/. Put the VPK files or other custom content in the host directory, then attach it to that container path through your deployment configuration. Confirm the mount is present inside the running container before troubleshooting the addon itself.
Publish both transport protocols
When the container uses bridge networking, publish the game port over both TCP and UDP. The published port must match the port configured for the server; mismatched or single-protocol mappings can prevent new players from connecting even when the container reports that the process is running.
Keep configuration and updates reproducible
- Store
server.cfg, addon files, and the container configuration in a location you back up. - Document the host-to-container mount and the published game port.
- Restart the container after changing mounted files if the server process does not rescan them.
- Use the container’s logs for startup and addon errors, then use
meta listinside the server console for plugin verification.
Verify an installation in a controlled order
- Start with no new files. Confirm the unmodified server starts and accepts a local test connection.
- Add one content addon. Place a Workshop campaign in
addons/workshopor a non-Workshop VPK inaddons, then restart and test the affected campaign or map. - Read startup output. Stop at the first addon parse error; later errors may be consequences of that failure.
- Install MetaMod and SourceMod. Restart and run
meta versionormeta list. - Add one plugin. Install its
.smxand support files, restart or reload as documented, and inspect logs. - Record the working state. Keep the known-good file set and configuration before adding another change.
Troubleshooting common failures
The campaign does not appear
- Check the path character by character. Workshop campaigns belong in
left4dead2/addons/workshop/; non-Workshop campaigns normally belong directly inleft4dead2/addons/. - Make sure the VPK is inside the dedicated-server tree, not only in your personal client’s addon directory.
- Check the author’s notes for required companion files or a campaign-specific installation path.
- Restart the server after copying the file and inspect startup output for parse errors.
The server reports an addon parse or load error
- Remove the last addon added and confirm the server starts again.
- Verify that the file is complete and was not renamed or partially copied.
- Check whether the addon supports dedicated servers and the current game version.
- Restore the backed-up
addonsdirectory if several files were changed at once, then reintroduce them individually.
meta list shows nothing or is unavailable
- Confirm MetaMod’s files were merged into
left4dead2, not copied as a nestedaddonsfolder. - Generate the VDF specifically for Left 4 Dead 2 and place it in
left4dead2/addons/. - Perform a full server restart.
- Check console and log output for missing libraries or permission errors.
SourceMod is loaded but a plugin is missing
- Confirm the
.smxis inleft4dead2/addons/sourcemod/plugins/. - Install the plugin’s required gamedata, translations, configs, and dependencies.
- Read the SourceMod log for the exact filename and line of the failure.
- Check the release notes for a required reload command or a server restart.
The addon works in a local game but not on the server
A local client can load files from its own Workshop or Add-ons directory, while the dedicated server reads a separate tree. Copy the server-supported files to the server path, use the Workshop subdirectory for Workshop campaigns, and check whether the author requires clients to install a matching component. A client-only cosmetic does not provide server-side gameplay functionality.
Players cannot join a Docker server
For bridge networking, publish the configured game port on both TCP and UDP and ensure the published number matches the server’s configured port. A container can appear healthy while new connections fail if one protocol is omitted or the ports do not match.

Which installation approach fits your server?
| Approach | Best for | File/control model | Update and troubleshooting burden |
|---|---|---|---|
| Windows SteamCMD | Operators who want direct file access on Windows | Copy files into the local left4dead2 tree; edit cfg/server.cfg |
Manual updates and restarts, but straightforward console and filesystem access |
| GNU/Linux SteamCMD | Operators comfortable with a persistent server account and shell tools | Same addon paths under the Linux SteamCMD library | Manual updates, permissions, service management, and log inspection |
| Docker | Operators already managing containers and declarative deployments | Mount host custom content into /addons/; configure ports and restarts in the container setup |
Mounts, image updates, container logs, and TCP/UDP publishing must be maintained |
| Managed hosting | Owners who prefer someone else to maintain the machine and network | Use the host’s file manager or support process for the same addon types | Recurring service cost in exchange for less operating-system, update, and uptime work; confirm that custom VPKs, MetaMod, and SourceMod are allowed |
Self-hosting provides the most direct control and the clearest recovery path. Managed hosting can remove server maintenance, but you still need to understand the addon directory rules and keep compatible backups.

Maintenance practices that prevent broken servers
- Update the dedicated server with
app_update 222860on a planned schedule, then test critical campaigns and plugins before opening the server publicly. - Keep separate backups of
server.cfg, VPK content, MetaMod/SourceMod files, and plugin configuration. - Record each addon’s version, source, dependencies, and installation date.
- Remove obsolete plugins instead of leaving duplicate versions in the plugins directory.
- After a game or framework update, inspect logs and run
meta listbefore assuming every plugin remains compatible. - Use the author’s compatibility notes as the final authority for gameplay scripts, because a correct folder alone cannot make an unsupported addon work.
Quick installation checklist
- Dedicated server installed or updated with SteamCMD application ID

- Docker bridge deployments publishing the configured game port over both TCP and UDP.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do Workshop campaigns go in the normal addons folder?
No. Valve’s dedicated-server rule places Workshop campaigns in left4dead2/addons/workshop/; campaigns not downloaded from the Workshop can use left4dead2/addons/.
Can I install a SourceMod .smx file as a VPK addon?
No. An .smx is a server plugin and belongs in left4dead2/addons/sourcemod/plugins/ after MetaMod:Source and SourceMod are installed.
What command confirms that MetaMod loaded?
Run meta version or meta list in the dedicated-server console after a full restart.
