For an original Windows Server 2003 SP1 installation, install MMC 3.0 with Microsoft update KB907265. Choose the package for the server’s architecture—x86, x64, or Itanium—and close all open MMC consoles before setup. Windows Server 2003 R2 already includes MMC 3.0, so it does not need the standalone update.
What MMC 3.0 does
Microsoft Management Console (MMC) is a host for administrative tools, called consoles; snap-ins supply the specific management functions. Microsoft describes MMC as a way to create, save, and open tools for managing Windows hardware, software, and network components (Microsoft Learn).

Check whether you need the update
- Original Windows Server 2003 SP1: KB907265 is the standalone MMC 3.0 update.
- Windows Server 2003 R2: MMC 3.0 is included, so do not install the standalone update just to obtain MMC 3.0.
- Earlier than SP1: the update requires Windows Server 2003 SP1; confirm the installed service pack before attempting installation.
The archived Microsoft download pages list KB907265 as released on 13 March 2006. The original Microsoft download links are retired; the archive pages identify the original files and provide snapshot downloads.

Choose the correct KB907265 package
Match the package to the operating system architecture, not merely the processor in the server. Do not use the x86 installer on an x64 or Itanium installation.

Check the .NET Framework prerequisite
Windows Server 2003 SP1 is required for KB907265. Install Microsoft .NET Framework version 2.0.50727 when you need managed MMC 3.0 snap-ins. According to the KB summary, .NET 2.0 is not required if you use only MMC 2.0-or-earlier snap-ins.

- Confirm that the server is an original Windows Server 2003 SP1 installation rather than R2, and determine whether its operating system is x86, x64, or Itanium.
- Download the corresponding KB907265 executable from the archived package page listed above. The archived directions offer Run for immediate setup or Save to install later.
- Close all open MMC consoles, such as Computer Management or Services.
- Launch the downloaded executable and follow the update wizard.
- When setup finishes, open an administrative console to check that it starts.
Is a reboot required?
A restart is normally unnecessary if MMC was closed before setup. The KB summary identifies a restart requirement only when MMC was running during installation. If setup requests a restart, close any remaining MMC instances and rerun setup if appropriate for your change window.

Verify the installation and troubleshoot problems
Confirm MMC launches
Open Computer Management or Services and confirm the console starts. To check the executable version, inspect the properties of mmc.exe; you can also check the installed update list for KB907265.
Installer will not run
- Confirm that Windows Server 2003 SP1 is installed.
- Check that the package architecture matches the operating system: x86, x64, or Itanium.
- If the server is R2, do not apply the standalone update merely to get MMC 3.0; R2 includes it.
A managed snap-in will not load
Install .NET Framework 2.0.50727 if the snap-in is managed. The KB summary does not make .NET 2.0 a requirement for MMC 2.0-or-earlier snap-ins.

Setup asks for a restart
Check whether an MMC window remained open during installation. Close all MMC instances before rerunning setup; the documented restart condition is that MMC was running while the update was installed.
