To install Malwarebytes for Windows, download the installer from Malwarebytes, run MBsetup.exe, complete the Setup Wizard, and activate the app with your account, license key, or MB code. This guide follows the Windows v4 workflow; Malwarebytes now recommends version 5 for Windows 10 and higher, while v4 no longer receives complete software updates.
Before installing: check your Windows version and the v4 support status
Malwarebytes’ v4 installation instructions describe the setup process, but the company’s current lifecycle notice says version 4 no longer receives complete software updates. Malwarebytes recommends version 5 on Windows 10 or higher. Malwarebytes apps are no longer supported on Windows 7, Windows 8, or Windows 8.1. If you specifically need the v4 workflow, the steps below explain it. For a supported Windows 10 or 11 computer, consider the vendor-recommended v5 version instead. The lifecycle table lists v4.6.17.334 Component package 1.0.2390 as Active, with a general-availability date of 29 July 2024; that entry does not mean v4 receives the complete software updates available to version 5.

Use Malwarebytes’ official website or the Microsoft Store, not a third-party download page. Malwarebytes announced on 30 July 2026 that the full Malwarebytes for Windows app is available in the Microsoft Store, with the same real-time protection, Windows integration, and features as the direct-download version. In the Store, search for Malwarebytes and select Get. Details are in the Microsoft Store announcement.

For the direct installer route, go to the official Malwarebytes download page and download the Windows app. Malwarebytes warns that fake download pages and bogus security software are used to trick users; avoid third-party download sites.
Install Malwarebytes using MBsetup.exe
- Download the Windows installer from Malwarebytes’ official download page.
- Open the folder where it was downloaded and double-click
MBsetup.exe. If Windows displays a permission prompt, approve it to continue. - In the Setup Wizard, select Install.
- Choose Personal for a device owned by you or your family, or Business for a company or workplace device, then select Next. Malwarebytes states that Business protection does not include the VPN feature.
- If promotional product screens appear, skip them if you do not want to proceed with the offers. Wait for the installation to finish, then select Open Malwarebytes.
- On the activation screen, select Activate now and use one of the available activation methods below.
Malwarebytes’ installation instructions provide the vendor’s setup sequence and first-run guidance.

Activate the app and reach the dashboard
Choose the activation method that matches what you have:
- Malwarebytes account: Sign in to the account associated with your subscription.
- License key: Enter your key when prompted.
- MB code: Enter the code provided for activation.
After activation succeeds, select Continue to Dashboard. If you have not activated yet, follow the available on-screen option rather than entering a key or code you do not have.

What happens on the first launch
On a first installation, the dashboard offers a one-time Start scan flow that covers Device security, Online safety, and Trusted Advisor. Malwarebytes says the scans may take a few minutes and can be paused.
Fix common installation problems
Malwarebytes’ troubleshooting guidance focuses on connectivity, software conflicts, installer location, restart behavior, and Windows app-source settings. Work through the relevant checks below; the official installation troubleshooting guide has the vendor’s current instructions.

Installer will not download or setup fails
- Check that the computer has an active internet connection.
- Temporarily disable third-party antivirus software and VPN or proxy settings, then try again. Re-enable protections after installation where applicable.
- If the failure continues, check that
ark.mwbsys.comis allowed through your firewall on port443. - Run the installer from a local drive, not a network drive.
- Windows 8.1 and earlier must be upgraded before downloading the app. Separately, Malwarebytes no longer supports its apps on Windows 7, 8, or 8.1.
The installer requests a restart
Restart the computer immediately. Malwarebytes says the installer should launch automatically after the reboot; do not start the app manually during that process.

You are upgrading an existing installation
Install to the same location as the previous version. Malwarebytes says most users install to C:Program FilesMalwarebytes. If you need to choose a different location, uninstall the existing version first.

Windows says the app is not Microsoft-verified
On Windows 10 or Windows 11, open Windows’ app recommendation settings and change the setting to Anywhere, then run the installer again. This changes which app sources Windows permits; continue to download only from Malwarebytes or the Microsoft Store.
