To install Magento Open Source on Ubuntu, first match your Ubuntu server, PHP, database, and search service to the exact Magento release you plan to run. Then prepare the web stack, install Composer and Adobe repository credentials, create the project, set filesystem permissions, and run Magento’s command-line installer. The commands and dependency versions are release-sensitive, so do not treat one package list as suitable for every Magento version.
Choose the Magento release before installing dependencies
Start with Adobe’s system requirements. Adobe supports only the software combinations listed for a given release; an Ubuntu server or dependency combination outside the table is not validated or supported. The table includes Linux x86-64 distributions such as Ubuntu.

For context, Adobe’s 2026 requirements table lists Magento/Commerce 2.4.9 with PHP 8.5 and Composer 2.10; it lists OpenSearch 3 and MariaDB 12.3 as recommended, with MariaDB 11.8 also listed. These are values for that specific release row, not defaults for older Magento versions. Check Adobe’s current table for the release you select before installing or upgrading any component.
Prepare Ubuntu and the application stack
Magento is more than a PHP codebase. Adobe’s on-premises installation flow calls for a prepared PHP environment, web server, database, and search engine before downloading the project and running installation. Its prerequisites guidance directs Ubuntu operators to update packages and verify Apache, PHP, and a compatible database version.

Use the dependency versions supported by your selected Magento release. Install and configure a compatible search service as well as the database and web server; do not assume a basic PHP-and-Apache setup alone is sufficient. If you do not already administer an Ubuntu server and its services, consider whether a managed environment that handles operating-system and service maintenance is a better fit. The relevant choice is who maintains the stack and whether it matches Adobe’s matrix, not simply whether the machine runs Ubuntu.
Install PHP and verify its extensions
Install the PHP version required by the chosen release, using packages appropriate to your Ubuntu version. Compare the resulting PHP modules with Adobe’s current PHP settings and prerequisites. Magento Open Source requires extensions including bcmath, curl, gd, intl, mbstring, pdo_mysql, soap, sockets, sodium, xmlwriter, xsl, and zip. This is a representative set, not a substitute for Adobe’s full, release-specific list.
Review the PHP timezone and configuration settings in Adobe’s guidance too. A package command copied from a different Ubuntu or PHP release can install the wrong version or leave required modules missing, so verify the actual PHP version and enabled extensions before proceeding.

Install Composer and prepare Adobe repository credentials
Adobe documents Composer as the route for obtaining Magento Open Source. You need Composer and authentication keys for the Adobe Commerce repository. When Composer prompts for credentials, use the public key as the username and the private key as the password, as described in Adobe’s Composer installation guide.
Treat the private key as a secret. Avoid exposing it in shared terminal logs, public shell history, or source control, and follow your organization’s credential-storage practices.
Create the Magento Open Source project
Log in as the filesystem owner that will manage the Magento files, move to the intended application location, and run Adobe’s project-creation command:

Replace <install-directory-name> with the directory you intend to use. Composer will request the repository credentials if they are not already configured. Adobe’s quick-start installation guide covers this Magento Open Source project workflow as well as its command-line setup.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Set filesystem ownership and permissions
Choose a filesystem owner for Magento and use that account for Magento CLI commands; Adobe warns against installing the application as root. The web server also needs the access required to serve the application and write to designated Magento directories. In Adobe’s Ubuntu example, the web-server group is www-data, group write permissions are granted to relevant application directories, and bin/magento is made executable.
Apply the ownership and permissions from Adobe’s quick-start guidance to your deployment’s actual paths and web-server configuration. Do not broaden write access indiscriminately: the web server should receive the access Magento requires, while CLI work should continue under the filesystem owner.

Run the command-line installer
Install Magento with bin/magento setup:install, supplying values for your deployment rather than copying sample credentials. The required settings include the base URL, database connection, and administrator account; use Adobe’s CLI installation examples for the command structure and available options.
Run the command from the Magento project directory as the filesystem owner, with the database and other required services configured and reachable. Set a real hostname and database details for the environment, and create a unique administrator password. Any sample URL, username, password, or database value in documentation is illustrative, not a production secret or a value to reuse.

Verify the installation and complete deployment work
After the installer finishes, check that the storefront and administrator interface load at the intended URL and that Magento can reach its database and search service. Configure scheduled tasks and HTTPS, and address production security and operational maintenance using current Adobe guidance. Completing the installation command alone does not establish that a store is hardened or ready for production traffic.
