Install LuckPerms as a server mod: use the jar built for your exact Minecraft version and loader, place it in the server’s mods folder, restart, then configure permissions from the console. Forge and Fabric use the same installation path and configuration file, but Fabric does not make vanilla commands permission-aware on its own.

What you need before installing
LuckPerms must match two things at once: the Minecraft version and the server loader. A jar for Forge is not interchangeable with a Fabric jar, and a jar built for another Minecraft release may fail during discovery even when the filename looks similar. Check the version shown by your server startup command or console, then identify whether the server is running Forge or Fabric.
Java and network prerequisites
- The current LuckPerms installation guide requires Java 11 or newer. Some Minecraft releases have a higher requirement, such as Java 21, so use the Java version required by your particular server release rather than assuming Java 11 is always enough. See the official installation guide for the current prerequisite notes.
- The first LuckPerms load needs outbound internet access because external libraries are downloaded. Permit the server to reach
libraries.luckperms.netandrepo1.maven.org, or prepare an offline installation as described below. - Make a backup of the server before changing mods or permission data. At minimum, preserve the existing
config,LuckPerms, and world directories.
Choose the correct download
Download only from the official LuckPerms site or the project’s official CurseForge listing. The official homepage lists version 5.5.87 at the time of publication (accessed 2026-10-14). The CurseForge listing recorded 2,190,854 downloads in the same 2026 crawl; that figure is a project total, not a guarantee that a particular jar supports your release.

On the download page, select the file whose loader and Minecraft-version labels match your server. Do not rename a Forge file to make it look like Fabric, or vice versa. If you are replacing an existing installation, note the old filename so you can remove it before uploading the new one.

The installation mechanics are therefore nearly identical. The practical difference documented in the LuckPerms FAQ is that a Fabric server cannot use LuckPerms permissions with vanilla commands unless another mod adds those checks. A mod can also bypass permissions entirely if it never asks the permission API, regardless of loader.

1. Identify the server root and start command
The server root is the directory containing your world folders and the loader’s server files. A Forge installation normally contains the Forge server jar or launcher files; a Fabric installation contains the Fabric server launcher or the command you used to start it. If you use a hosting panel, open its file manager at the same level as world, config, and mods.
Do not copy LuckPerms into the client’s .minecraft/mods directory when your goal is a dedicated server. The server must load the mod itself.
2. Start the loader once, then stop cleanly
Run the normal Forge or Fabric server startup command before adding LuckPerms if this is a new server. Let the loader finish its first initialization so it creates the standard directories, then stop the server using the console’s stop command. A clean stop prevents partially written files and confirms that the loader itself works before you add another variable.

If the server has already run successfully, you can skip this first-start pass, but shut it down completely before changing files. Never replace a jar while the Java process is still running.
3. Remove older LuckPerms jars
Open the server’s mods folder and remove older LuckPerms files before uploading the replacement. Keeping two versions, even when one has a different filename, can make the loader attempt to initialize both and produce duplicate-class or dependency errors. Keep a backup copy outside mods if you need to roll back.
4. Upload the matching jar to mods
- Download the Forge or Fabric jar that matches the server’s Minecraft version.
- Upload that single jar to
<server-root>/mods/. Create the folder only if the loader did not create it. - Check the filename and file size in the panel or shell so you know the upload completed rather than leaving a zero-byte file.
- Leave the jar compressed as downloaded; do not extract it.
Forge and Fabric both use mods; Bukkit-style servers instead use plugins, which is not the correct location for a Forge or Fabric installation.
5. Restart and verify the console
Start the same Forge or Fabric command again. During startup, look for LuckPerms initialization and for any dependency, Java, or version errors. A successful load should proceed past mod discovery without a stack trace that names LuckPerms. Stop and correct an error before allowing players to join; a server that starts with LuckPerms disabled will not enforce the permissions you expect.
6. Confirm generated files
After a successful first load, LuckPerms creates its configuration under /config/luckperms/luckperms.conf and its data directory under /LuckPerms/. The exact capitalization matters on Linux hosts. If neither location appears, inspect the startup log for an initialization failure and verify that the jar is in the server’s actual root, not a client or backup directory.

Configure the generated files
The main configuration file
Forge and Fabric share the same configuration path: /config/luckperms/luckperms.conf. Stop the server before editing it, use a plain-text editor, and preserve the file’s syntax. Make one change at a time, save a backup, and restart so an invalid value cannot be mistaken for a permissions problem.
The file controls storage and other LuckPerms behavior. The default file-based H2 storage is suitable for a single server and needs no separate database service. It keeps the permission data with that installation, which is convenient for a small private or community server.
Choose storage for one server or a network

For a network, create the database and credentials first, then configure every LuckPerms instance to use the same backend. Follow the network installation documentation for the database-specific settings and synchronization considerations. Installing LuckPerms only on a proxy cannot enforce a permission check that is made inside a backend Forge or Fabric mod.
Bootstrap your first administrator
LuckPerms does not automatically make your Minecraft account an administrator. From the server console, run:

lp user <your username> permission set luckperms.* true
Replace <your username> with the exact in-game name. Run the command without a leading slash in the server console; use the normal slash form only when issuing it in a command-capable game context. The official Usage guide describes this as the first step for giving yourself access to the plugin’s commands.

The wildcard grants every LuckPerms permission to that account, which is useful for initial administration but is not a least-privilege policy for ordinary players. Once you can manage LuckPerms, create groups, place users in the appropriate group, and grant only the nodes required by the commands or mods they should use. A typical sequence is:
- Create a group, for example
lp creategroup moderators. - Add a user to it with
lp user PlayerName parent set moderators. - Grant a specific node to the group with
lp group moderators permission set example.mod.node true. - Test with a non-operator account and remove the temporary wildcard when you no longer need unrestricted administration.
Replace example.mod.node with a node documented by the mod or command you are configuring. LuckPerms cannot invent a node for a mod that does not publish one.
Why permissions may not work on Fabric
Vanilla commands are not automatically protected
Fabric’s command system does not make vanilla commands permission-aware merely because LuckPerms is installed. The official FAQ states: “If you are running a Fabric server with LuckPerms, you cannot use permissions with vanilla commands.” If you need players to receive different access to vanilla commands, install a dedicated command-permission mod such as Minecraft Command Permissions or Command Hider, then configure that mod’s nodes in LuckPerms.

Permission support varies among Fabric mods because there is no universal requirement that every mod consult a permissions API. If a mod executes a command without checking permissions, assigning a LuckPerms node cannot change that behavior. Read the target mod’s documentation to find its node names and whether it supports a permissions API at all.
Use a focused diagnostic process
- Confirm LuckPerms loaded successfully in the startup console.
- Confirm the account is in the group you expect and that the group has the node set to
true. - Check inheritance, context, and server/world conditions in your LuckPerms data.
- Verify that the command or mod actually performs a permission check.
- Use LuckPerms’ verbose tools while reproducing the command to see whether a check is made and which result is returned.
If no check appears during a verbose session, the problem is in the command or mod integration rather than in the group assignment.
Troubleshooting installation and startup failures
LuckPerms does not appear in the mod list
- Confirm the jar is in the server’s
modsfolder, not the client folder or a nested folder such asmods/luckperms/. - Confirm you downloaded the Forge or Fabric build for the exact Minecraft version.
- Remove every older LuckPerms jar, then restart completely.
- Check the startup log rather than relying only on a hosting panel’s summary; dependency and Java errors are usually printed there.
The loader reports duplicate classes or conflicting versions
Two LuckPerms jars are the usual cause. Stop the server, list the contents of mods, keep one intended version, and start again. Also check that a host’s automatic mod installer has not restored an older copy.
Java errors stop initialization
Check the Java executable used by the server process, not just the version installed on your desktop. LuckPerms requires Java 11 or newer, while some Minecraft releases require Java 21. Update the server’s runtime or select the host’s Java 21 option when the Minecraft release demands it, then restart and read the new log.
Libraries cannot be downloaded
On the first load, allow outbound HTTPS access to libraries.luckperms.net and repo1.maven.org. Firewalls, DNS filtering, and restricted hosting containers can block one domain while allowing the other. After changing the network policy, restart so LuckPerms can retry.
For a server that must remain offline, install the same LuckPerms version once on an internet-connected server, let it finish downloading, and copy the contents of /LuckPerms/libs/ to the offline installation’s corresponding LuckPerms/libs/ directory. Keep the jar, configuration, and library versions aligned; copying only the jar does not replace the downloaded dependencies.
The configuration file is missing
Look for /config/luckperms/luckperms.conf relative to the server root and for the generated /LuckPerms/ directory. If they are absent, verify that the server completed initialization and that you are examining the live server directory used by the startup command. A control panel may expose separate folders for staging, backups, and the active instance.
Commands work for an operator but not for a normal player
Operator status and LuckPerms permissions are separate controls. First verify the player’s group and node, then check whether the command implementation supports permissions. On Fabric, a vanilla command will continue to follow its own operator logic until a compatible command-permission mod is installed. For a third-party mod, consult that mod’s documented node and test it with verbose diagnostics.
Updating or moving an installation safely
- Read the target jar’s loader and Minecraft-version compatibility before downloading.
- Stop the server cleanly and back up
/config/luckperms/,/LuckPerms/, and your world data. - Remove the old LuckPerms jar from
mods; do not leave both versions present. - Upload the new jar, preserving the existing configuration and data directories.
- Start the server and watch for migration, dependency, or database errors before reconnecting players.
- Test one administrator command and one restricted command with a non-operator account.
When moving from a single server to a network, do not simply copy a local H2 file to multiple servers and expect synchronization. Configure a supported shared backend and point every LuckPerms instance at it as described in the network documentation.
Quick verification checklist
- The Minecraft version and loader were identified before downloading.
- The jar came from the official site or official CurseForge listing and matches both values.
- Java meets the Minecraft release requirement and is at least Java 11 for LuckPerms.
- The loader was started once, then stopped cleanly before file changes.
- Only one LuckPerms jar is in the server’s
modsfolder. - The server restarted without LuckPerms dependency or initialization errors.
/config/luckperms/luckperms.confand/LuckPerms/exist in the active server root.- Your account was bootstrapped from the console, then moved toward least-privilege groups.
- On Fabric, any needed vanilla-command permission mod is installed and configured.
- For offline startup, the required
LuckPerms/libs/contents were copied from an online installation.
Once these checks pass, LuckPerms is installed correctly; remaining access problems are normally caused by a missing permission check in the command or mod, an incorrect node, group inheritance, or a context condition rather than by the jar’s location.
