What Lithium does on a server
Lithium is a game-logic optimization mod for Minecraft: Java Edition. It targets work such as game physics, mob AI, block ticking and other server-side calculations while aiming to preserve vanilla mechanics. It is not a shader, texture pack or graphics-rendering mod.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Because server performance depends on hardware, world complexity, simulation distance, entity counts and the workload of each tick, there is no single authoritative percentage improvement that applies to every installation. Treat Lithium as a set of workload-dependent optimizations rather than a guaranteed frame-rate or tick-time multiplier.
Lithium is also usable on the client, but a server can run it without requiring every player to install it. Other mods in a modpack can have different client-side requirements, so check those mods separately.

Requirements before you begin
- Minecraft: Java Edition: Identify the exact version used by the server, such as 1.20.4 or 1.21.x. A Java Edition mod cannot be installed on a Bedrock server.
- Fabric Loader: Lithium requires a Fabric server. It will not load on a Vanilla, Paper, or another incompatible server type.
- Compatible Java: Fabric recommends Java 17 for Minecraft 1.17 through 1.20.4 and Java 21 for Minecraft 1.20.5 and newer.
- Matching Lithium build: The Lithium file must match the server’s Minecraft version and Fabric loader environment. Do not choose a file solely because it is the newest one.
- File access: You need access to the server files or a host control panel that allows Fabric and mod uploads.
- Backup: Stop the server and make a copy of the world, configuration files and server files before changing the mod set.
Choose a Fabric installation method
Fabric documents two practical ways to create a server: an executable server launcher and a manual installer. Both produce a Fabric server capable of loading Lithium; the difference is how much of the setup is automated.
| Method | Best for | What it does | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Executable Fabric server launcher | A new server or an administrator who wants fewer manual steps | Downloads missing Fabric Loader and Minecraft files and starts the server through the Fabric launcher | Less direct control over the individual downloaded files |
| Manual Fabric installer | Administrators managing files themselves or migrating a carefully controlled server | Creates fabric-server-launch.jar; you provide the appropriate server.jar and manage the output directory |
More files and startup details to handle yourself |
For an existing server, the important decision is not which method is theoretically faster. Check whether your host panel supports Fabric’s launcher, whether you can restore a complete backup, and whether you can roll back to the previous server type if a mod or plugin conflict appears.

Use the executable server launcher
- Confirm the Minecraft version you intend to run and install the recommended Java runtime for that version.
- Obtain Fabric’s server launcher for that Minecraft version from Fabric’s official distribution.
- Place the launcher in a new, dedicated server directory.
- Run the launcher once. It downloads missing Minecraft and Fabric files and creates the initial server structure.
- Accept Minecraft’s EULA in the generated
eula.txtfile by changing the EULA setting totrue, then save it. - Start the server again and wait until it finishes generating the world and folders.
- Stop it cleanly from the server console. The first run creates the
modsdirectory if it was not already present.
The exact start command varies by operating system and host. Use the command or startup control supplied by Fabric or your host panel rather than replacing it with a Vanilla command.
Use the manual installer
- Install the Java runtime recommended for your Minecraft version.
- Run Fabric’s server installer and select the target Minecraft version.
- Choose the server installation option and select the directory that will contain the server.
- Let the installer create
fabric-server-launch.jarand the required launcher files. - Make sure the corresponding Minecraft
server.jaris in the output directory, as expected by the manual setup. - Run the generated Fabric startup command once, accept the EULA in
eula.txt, and start the server again. - After the world and folders are created, stop the server before adding Lithium.
Install Lithium in the server’s mods folder
Once Fabric starts successfully, the actual Lithium installation is short. The most common failures happen because the wrong JAR, wrong folder or wrong loader is used.

- Stop the server. Do not copy or replace mod files while the server is writing world data.
- Open the server directory. This is the directory containing the Fabric launcher and the world folders, not your personal Minecraft client directory.
- Create or open
mods. The folder must be directly inside the server directory. On a managed host, use the panel’s file manager or SFTP location for the Fabric server. - Download Lithium from its official project listing. Filter the files by the server’s exact Minecraft version and Fabric loader. A build for a nearby version is not a safe substitute.
- Copy the Lithium
.jarintomods. Keep it as a JAR; do not extract it, rename it to a different extension, or place it only in a client instance. - Remove duplicate files. Leaving two Lithium versions in the folder can cause a duplicate-mod or dependency error.
- Start the server with the normal Fabric command or panel control.
- Inspect the startup log. Open
logs/latest.logand verify that Fabric reports Lithium loading. If startup stops, read the first loader error rather than jumping to the final cascade of messages.
Fabric Loader is the only prerequisite Lithium itself requires. Lithium’s official installation guidance specifically states that no other mod or additional setup, including Fabric API, is required for Lithium to load.
Do players need Lithium on their clients?
No. Lithium can run server-side without being installed on every client, and clients can also use it independently. Players using an unmodded client can normally connect to a server that has Lithium installed.
This answer applies to Lithium itself, not automatically to the rest of your modpack. A different mod may add client-required blocks, items, screens or networking features, or may depend on Fabric API. Evaluate each additional mod’s compatibility notes separately. If the server rejects a player after Lithium is added, inspect the disconnect message and the complete mod list rather than assuming Lithium is the cause.
Add Lithium to an existing Fabric server
An existing Fabric server is the lowest-risk installation because the loader is already in place. You still need a rollback plan: a mod can expose a pre-existing compatibility issue, and a version mismatch can prevent the server from starting.

- Announce maintenance and stop the server normally.
- Copy the entire server directory or, at minimum, the world folders,
modsdirectory, configuration files and startup files to a dated backup location. - Record the server’s Minecraft version, Fabric Loader version and Java version. If your host panel hides these details, check the startup log.
- Open the server’s actual
modsdirectory and remove any old or duplicate Lithium JAR before adding the new one. - Select the Lithium release that matches the recorded Minecraft version and Fabric loader.
- Start the server and watch the console until it reaches the normal ready state.
- Open
logs/latest.log. Confirm Lithium loads and check for errors from other mods. - Join with a test account, check a few normal activities, and monitor the console before reopening the server to everyone.
If the server will not start, stop it, restore the backup or remove only the newly added Lithium JAR, then read the first error in the log. Keeping the previous working directory intact makes this rollback quick.
Java versions and common startup failures
| Minecraft version | Fabric’s recommended Java version | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| 1.17–1.20.4 | Java 17 | The host’s startup command must point to a Java 17 runtime, not an older system Java. |
| 1.20.5 and newer | Java 21 | Use a Java 21 runtime for the server process; changing Java only on your desktop does not change the host’s runtime. |
Fabric’s recommendation is version-specific. If the process fails before Fabric begins loading mods, verify Java first. A wrong Java runtime can produce an early class-version or launcher failure that looks unrelated to Lithium.
Troubleshoot a Lithium installation
The server starts as Vanilla
- Check the startup command or host panel selection. It must launch Fabric, not a plain
server.jar. - Look for Fabric Loader messages in
logs/latest.log. - Confirm the Lithium JAR is in the server’s
modsdirectory, not the client profile’s folder.
“Incompatible mod” or version errors appear
- Confirm the Minecraft version shown in the Lithium file name or project listing matches the server exactly.
- Confirm the file is a Fabric build for Java Edition.
- Remove older Lithium JARs and any file downloaded for a different Minecraft release.
- Check the first loader error in
logs/latest.log; later errors are often consequences of the first mismatch.
The server says Fabric API is missing
Lithium itself does not require Fabric API. Another mod may. Identify the mod named in the dependency error and follow that mod’s requirements. Installing Fabric API solely because Lithium is present is unnecessary, while omitting it can still prevent a separate mod from loading.
The server fails before mods load
- Verify Java 17 for Minecraft 1.17–1.20.4 or Java 21 for Minecraft 1.20.5 and newer.
- Check that the Fabric launcher and Minecraft server files belong to the same target version.
- Review the first exception in the console and
logs/latest.log. - Restore the backup if the failure followed a broader loader or server-file change, then retry with only the intended Lithium JAR added.
Players cannot connect after installation
- Confirm the client is using the same Minecraft version accepted by the server.
- Check whether another mod in the pack, rather than Lithium, requires a client installation or a matching mod list.
- Read the exact disconnect message and compare it with the server log at the same time.
- Test with an otherwise unmodded Java client. Lithium alone does not require every player to install the mod.
There is no visible performance change
Lithium optimizes specific game-logic workloads; it does not guarantee a uniform result on every world or machine. Measure the symptom you are trying to solve—tick delays, entity-heavy areas or block-update load—rather than expecting a universal percentage. Also check simulation distance, view distance, entity farms, other mods and the server’s Java settings before concluding that the installation failed.

How to verify the installation safely
- Start the server and wait for the normal “ready” state in the console.
- Search
logs/latest.logfor a Lithium load message and for any error or warning naming the mod. - Connect with one test player and perform ordinary server actions such as moving between loaded areas, using redstone and interacting with mobs.
- Watch the console for repeated exceptions, watchdog warnings or disconnects.
- Compare behavior with your pre-install backup only if you have a reproducible problem; do not delete the backup until the server has been stable.
Successful loading proves that Fabric accepted the JAR. It does not prove that every other mod is compatible, so a short monitored test is worthwhile on a busy survival server.

When a managed host is involved
A managed Minecraft host can simplify the process if its control panel offers a Fabric server type, the correct Java runtime and a file manager or SFTP access. Before uploading Lithium, confirm which Minecraft versions the panel supports and where it expects server-side mods. Some panels expose a dedicated mods directory; others require you to create it after selecting Fabric.
Use the panel’s restart control only after the JAR upload is complete, and download a copy of the world backup before changing the server type or loader. If the panel does not support Fabric’s launcher, ask whether it permits a custom Fabric startup command; do not place Lithium in a Vanilla or plugin-only server and expect it to load.
Frequently overlooked details
- Loader matters as much as the Minecraft version: a file for another loader is not interchangeable with a Fabric build.
- Server and client folders are different: copying Lithium to your local game’s
modsfolder does not install it on a remote server. - Do not unzip the JAR: Fabric loads the mod archive as supplied.
- One compatible JAR is enough: remove superseded versions to avoid duplicate-mod errors.
- Backups are part of the installation: keep a known-good world and configuration copy before testing.
- No performance promise is universal: results vary with the world, hardware and active systems.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I install Lithium on a Vanilla, Paper or plugin server?
No. Lithium is a Fabric mod. The server must be running a compatible Fabric Loader installation; placing the JAR in a Vanilla, Paper or other incompatible server will not load it.

Is Fabric API required for Lithium?
No. Lithium’s official installation guidance says Fabric API and other additional setup are not required by Lithium itself. Another mod in the same pack may require Fabric API independently.

Fabric recommends Java 17 for Minecraft 1.17–1.20.4 and Java 21 for Minecraft 1.20.5 and newer.
Will an unmodded client join a server with Lithium?
Yes. Lithium can be installed server-side without requiring clients to install it. Check other mods in the pack for their own client requirements.
Where exactly does the Lithium file go?
Put the matching Lithium .jar directly in the Fabric server’s mods directory—the folder alongside the server launcher and world folders—not only in a local client profile.
How do I remove Lithium if it causes a problem?
Stop the server, remove the Lithium JAR from the server’s mods directory, and restart. If other files were changed, restore the dated backup you made before installation.
