One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchTo install KOReader on a jailbroken Kindle, first match the package and launcher to your exact Kindle model and variant, firmware version, and jailbreak method. The steps are not universal: some supported newer jailbreaks use KPM, while others require copying files over USB and installing a compatible launcher. Before starting, finish the required post-jailbreak steps, block OTA updates, and remove any temporary OTA filler files, as required by the KOReader Kindle installation guide.
Before you install: identify your Kindle and jailbreak
Write down the exact Kindle model and variant, its firmware version, and the jailbreak method you used. “Jailbroken” by itself is not enough to determine a safe installation path. The model, variant, and firmware affect jailbreak compatibility as well as which KOReader package and launcher apply. For modern devices, consult current KindleModding homebrew instructions alongside the KOReader guide.

- Complete all post-jailbreak steps required by your jailbreak method.
- Block OTA updates according to that method’s instructions.
- Remove any temporary OTA filler files before installing.
- Keep the device’s model, variant, firmware, and jailbreak method available while following the matching KOReader instructions.
If you are not sure which jailbreak workflow you have, stop before copying files or entering commands; choosing the wrong branch can leave you with a launcher that does not work on your device.
Which KOReader version should I download for my Kindle?
Choose the package family using both firmware and device family. The KOReader guide, edited August 28, 2026, lists these compatibility divisions:
#1 Best Overall
- Light and compact - With adjustable brightness, high contrast ratio, and fast page turns.
- Effortless reading in any light - Read comfortably with a 6“ glare-free display, adjustable front light—now 25% brighter at max setting—and dark mode.
- Escape into your books - Tune out messages, emails, and social media with a distraction-free reading experience.
- Read for a while - Get up to 6 weeks of battery life on a single charge.
- Take your library with you – 16 GB storage holds thousands of books.
| KOReader package family | Guide’s stated applicability | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| KindleHF | Kindle firmware 5.16.3 and above | Confirm the firmware version as well as the model. |
| PW2 | Listed touchscreen models from Paperwhite 2 onward running firmware up to 5.16.2 | This is a specific older-firmware branch; do not assume every newer Kindle belongs here. |
| Kindle | Kindle 4, Kindle Touch, and original Paperwhite | Check the exact model, not just the Kindle or Paperwhite name. |
| Legacy | Physical-keyboard Kindle families and variants | Some minor features may be unavailable on non-touch devices. |
These labels are binary compatibility families, not broad marketing categories. Confirm your exact device against the KOReader device-specific guide before downloading.
How do I install KOReader on a jailbroken Kindle?
Use the path in the KOReader instructions that matches your jailbreak method and firmware. For some supported recent jailbreak flows, KPM provides the simplest installation. If your flow does not support KPM, use the manual package-and-launcher route specified for your device. The KOReader guide documents scriptlet, Booklet, KUALA, and legacy KUAL options under different conditions; do not combine their steps or install a launcher by default.

Option 1: install with KPM, if your jailbreak supports it
The KOReader guide describes KPM for supported recent jailbreak flows that bundle it, and labels this workflow experimental. With Wi-Fi enabled, enter each command separately in the Kindle search bar:
Recommended Free Tools
;kpm update;kpm upgrade;kpm install koreader
KPM installs KOReader and a scriptlet. When installation completes, tap the new document or book item to launch KOReader. If KPM is not included or supported in your jailbreak flow, do not try to force this route; use the matching manual instructions instead.

- Ready for travel – The ultra-thin design has a larger glare-free screen so pages stay sharp no matter where you are.
- Escape into your books – Your Kindle doesn’t have social media, notifications, or other distracting apps.
- Battery life for your longest novel – A single charge via USB-C lasts up to 12 weeks.
- Read in any light – Adjust the display from white to amber to read in bright sunlight or in the dark.
Option 2: install manually when KPM does not apply
- Download the KOReader package family that matches your Kindle’s model and firmware.
- Connect the Kindle to a computer over USB and copy the full package contents to the Kindle’s USB root. The
koreaderandextensionsfolders should appear at the root level, not inside an extra enclosing folder. - Install or copy the launcher specified for your jailbreak method and firmware. Depending on that history, the guide may call for a scriptlet, Booklet, KUALA, or a legacy KUAL route.
- Eject the Kindle cleanly, then open the newly installed launcher item as directed by the relevant device-specific instructions.
A data-capable USB cable compatible with your Kindle can be useful for this manual transfer if you do not already have a way to move files. It is not needed for the KPM route.
Do I need KUAL to install KOReader?
No—not as a universal requirement. The KOReader guide includes KUAL only as a compatibility-specific legacy option where a device’s firmware and jailbreak history call for it. KindleModding’s current homebrew guidance describes KPM and scriptlets as the current post-jailbreak model and says KUAL is obsolete in its workflow. Follow the launcher branch documented for your own Kindle rather than installing KUAL just because an older guide mentions it.

Why won’t KOReader launch on my Kindle?
A wrong package family or launcher branch is a likely place to investigate first, because both depend on the device and jailbreak details. Check the setup against the KOReader guide and your jailbreak’s instructions:

- Confirm the exact model, variant, and firmware, then verify that the downloaded package family matches.
- Confirm that your jailbreak method supports the launcher you installed; KPM, scriptlets, Booklet, KUALA, and legacy KUAL are not interchangeable.
- Make sure the required post-jailbreak steps are complete and OTA updates are blocked.
- For a manual install, check that both
koreaderandextensionsare in the Kindle USB root and that you copied the package contents rather than nesting them in an extra folder. - If the device or firmware is not covered clearly by the instructions you have, consult the current KOReader and KindleModding documentation rather than experimenting with another launcher.
Using KOReader after installation
Exit KOReader before switching the Kindle into USB mass-storage mode. The KOReader guide says using USB mass storage while KOReader is running is unsupported and can cause crashes.
