To install Java on Windows 10, first check which Java release your app or course requires. For programming, install a JDK; for an application, follow its stated Java version and architecture. Download the matching Windows installer from Oracle’s official Java downloads page, run it, then verify the installation in a new Command Prompt.
Choose the right Java version and package
Do not assume the newest release will work with every older application. Check the app’s documentation or course instructions for its required Java version and whether it needs 32-bit or 64-bit Java. Oracle’s download page lists multiple releases and their associated terms: Oracle Java downloads.

Check Windows 10 support for the exact release
Compatibility is release-specific. Oracle’s certified configurations list Windows 10 x64 for JDK 24; that listing does not establish support for every other JDK version. Check the configuration information for the precise release you intend to install: Oracle JDK 24 certified system configurations.

Review the license for your intended use
Oracle’s download page states different terms and update windows for different Java releases. At the time reflected on that page, JDK 27 is identified as the latest Java SE release and is offered under Oracle No-Fee Terms and Conditions; the JDK 25 page describes a no-fee update period through September 2028 and subsequent licensing conditions. These terms can change, so review the license attached to the specific release and use you select: Oracle Java downloads.
Download the Windows installer
Use Oracle’s official download page rather than a third-party download portal. Select the release your application or development environment requires, then choose the Windows package for your system. Current Windows x64 JDK releases are offered as EXE installers, MSI installers, and ZIP archives.

- EXE: the straightforward choice for an interactive installation.
- MSI: suitable for managed or enterprise deployment workflows.
- ZIP: for manual, archive-based setup.
For a typical personal installation, choose the EXE unless you specifically need MSI deployment or want to configure an archive manually. Confirm the release, Windows architecture, and license on the official download page before downloading.

Run the installer
- Open the downloaded EXE file. Oracle’s Windows JDK installation instructions require administrator privileges.
- Follow the installer prompts. You can use the offered defaults unless you have a reason to choose a different destination.
- Note the installation folder if you may need to configure PATH. Oracle documents
C:Program FilesJavajdk-25as the default location for JDK 25; the path can differ for another release or if you customize the installer. See Oracle’s JDK 25 Windows installation guide.
Verify Java from Command Prompt
Open a new Command Prompt after installation and enter:

java -versionFor a development installation, check that the compiler is available as well:
javac -versionCompare the version shown with the release you intended to install. A new Command Prompt is important after a PATH change because environment changes apply to newly opened command windows. Oracle explains the Windows PATH behavior in its JDK 25 installation instructions.

Fix PATH if Java is not found or the wrong version appears
If Windows says java or javac is not recognized, or the command reports an unexpected version, check the PATH environment variable and the installed Java locations.

binsubfolder. For example, if the JDK is installed inC:Program FilesJavajdk-25, its tools are inC:Program FilesJavajdk-25bin. - Open Windows’ Environment Variables settings and inspect the PATH entries. Add the JDK’s
binfolder if it is missing; append it without deleting unrelated entries. - Check the order of Java-related PATH entries. Windows searches PATH directories in order, and Oracle advises keeping only one JDK
bindirectory in PATH. - Close Command Prompt, open a new one, and rerun
java -versionand, if relevant,javac -version.
One documented conflict occurs when JDK 25 and JRE 8 are installed in a particular order: the JRE 8 javapath entry can appear before the JDK, causing java -version to report 1.8.0. If that happens, inspect which executable Windows resolves and the order of PATH entries; the result does not by itself mean the JDK installation failed. Oracle describes this case in its Windows installation guide.
