For the documented modern homebrew route, you need a Zune HD running firmware 4.5. Install Project Lyra on the player, then use Lyra’s Mods tab to browse and install available games and other content. The simplest installation uses the Zune HD’s Wi-Fi and browser; it does not require a PC. These steps do not apply to every Zune model.
Check your Zune model and firmware
Project Lyra’s current installation instructions target the Zune HD on firmware 4.5. Confirm that your player is a Zune HD before continuing; older Zune models use different tools and procedures. Project Lyra’s getting-started guide and installation guide describe the supported scope.

The browser route needs a Zune HD connected to Wi-Fi, but no computer or preliminary download.

- On the Zune HD, open the browser and visit install.zune.moe.
- Tap Install and wait for the player to reboot automatically.
- If the page reports that an attempt did not take, tap Install again. Project Lyra says execution depends on a race in the browser’s script engine, so an attempt may need repeating.
Project Lyra describes the installer as writing a small installer to Flash2lyraboot.exe. That installer fetches the platform package, checks it against a SHA-256 digest compiled into the installer, unpacks Lyra into flash2automation, and reboots the player. This is the project’s description, not an independent security audit.
There is an important transport caveat: Project Lyra says the browser installer page and package are served over plain HTTP because the Zune HD browser cannot complete a current TLS handshake and lacks a certificate authority that signs for the domain. The project says Lyra’s later mod downloads use TLS through its own stack. Consider that distinction when deciding whether to use the browser route. Read the project’s installation notes.

Install games and other mods from the Zune HD
Installing Lyra is the first stage; adding content is a separate step. After Lyra is installed, use its on-device interface:
- Open the Mods tab from Lyra’s home screen.
- Browse the repository entries, which include names, authors, categories, and descriptions.
- Select a mod and choose the install option shown on the device.
- Use the Manage view to enable or disable installed mods.
The available repository feed and Lyra’s feature set can change. Check what the player currently lists rather than assuming a particular game or a fixed catalog will always be available. See Project Lyra’s mod-installation instructions.

Optional: deploy Lyra from a PC over USB
If the browser route is unsuitable, Project Lyra documents two PC-based ways to deploy the same Lyra payload. In either case, connect the Zune HD and make sure the computer recognizes it over USB.
Deploy Kit and zune-deploy
Use the Deploy Kit folder with zune-deploy over USB-MTP. The project’s instructions list a ~/.mtpz-data authentication file as a prerequisite for this route. Follow the current steps in Project Lyra’s install guide.

XNA package deployment
The alternative is deploying an XNA package through the XNA Game Studio Connect / Visual Studio path. This requires the associated developer toolchain and a connected, recognized Zune HD; it is not required for the Wi-Fi browser installation.
Microsoft’s Zune HD manual describes connecting the player with its sync cable. A compatible cable matters only if you choose USB deployment and do not already have one; the browser route needs no cable.

Use legacy package sync for archived Zune HD apps and games
A separate community-documented method uses archived packages with Zune software rather than Lyra. It is specific to Zune HD apps and games and should not be mixed up with Lyra’s installation or mod-management process.
- Download and extract an app or game package from an archive you trust.
- If it does not already exist, create
%LOCALAPPDATA%MicrosoftZuneApplicationson the computer. - Move the selected package files into that folder.
- Connect the Zune HD and open the Zune software to sync the content.
The community setup guide warns that many apps relying on external services may no longer work because those services changed or were decommissioned. It says most games should be playable, but that is not a guarantee that every archived package is available or works on every player.
Where historical XNA guidance fits
Microsoft’s XNA Game Studio 3.1 documentation describes a developer workflow for deploying projects to supported Zune devices running firmware 3.0 or later. It requires the XNA/Visual Studio toolchain and a device connection. This is historical development guidance—not a prerequisite for installing Lyra through the Zune HD browser or syncing archived packages.
