The safest arrangement is a strict two-mode workflow: install file-changing mods for PC Story Mode only, keep those changes isolated in a mods folder, and return to an unmodified game with BattlEye enabled before launching official GTA Online. Rockstar says BattlEye is required for online sessions and that modding online games or manipulating protected game code can lead to account action.
A modded Story Mode installation is not an online-safe installation merely because you select Story Mode from the menu. Treat Story Mode and GTA Online as separate operating states, verify the game edition and each mod’s requirements, and test every change offline before you switch back.

What “safe” means for GTA V modding
In this guide, “safe” means reducing the chance that modified files or loaders are present when you connect to official GTA Online servers. It does not mean that any third-party mod is endorsed by Rockstar, that an account can never be suspended, or that choosing a menu option creates a perfect technical barrier.

Rockstar’s current support material makes the important boundary clear: BattlEye is needed during online play, while it can be disabled for Story Mode on supported platforms. Rockstar also identifies modding in online games, manipulating protected game code and interfering with other players as conduct that can result in account suspensions. Keep all file-changing mods in Story Mode and use a clean configuration for online play.

The procedure below is for the PC versions of Grand Theft Auto V. It follows the publicly documented Story Mode setup sequence from GTAPoliceMods, while Rockstar’s support pages provide the policy, BattlEye and troubleshooting requirements. Tool interfaces and mod instructions can change, so the readme supplied with a particular mod takes precedence over a generic example.
Read the official rules before changing a file
Rockstar’s support page, updated September 15, 2026, directs players to the Terms of Service, Creator Platform License Agreement and Rockstar Games Mod Guidelines for the applicable policy context. The page specifically concerns Single-Player or Story Mode mods: Rockstar’s Single-Player or Story Mode mod policy page.
The separate account-action guidance, updated May 20, 2024, lists online modding, protected-code manipulation and abuse that affects other players as violations that may trigger suspensions: Rockstar’s account-impact guidance. The existence of a Story Mode mod does not grant permission to load it into an online session.

Do not infer a broader permission than the published policy actually provides. If a mod has an online component, changes protected game code, or is advertised for use in multiplayer, leave it out of this workflow.
Check your edition, mod type and requirements first
Current PC installations are commonly identified as either Legacy or Enhanced. The two editions use separate installation folders, and a mod made for one edition does not automatically work in the other. The installation guide from GTAPoliceMods says to read the mod author’s stated edition support before copying anything.

Do not assume that a mod labelled “GTA V” supports both editions. If the author does not state edition compatibility, treat that as unresolved rather than guessing. Keep a note of the version, file list and installation location for every mod you install.
Prepare a reversible installation
Back up before installing tools or mods
Make a backup before OpenIV, an ASI loader, ScriptHookV or a mod changes the installation. A backup can be a copy of the original game files on another drive, a launcher-supported verify-and-repair baseline, or a fresh installation you can restore without losing personal saves. The important point is that you can return to a known-clean state without trying to remember which files were changed.
- Close GTA V and every launcher before copying or replacing files.
- Record whether the installation is Legacy or Enhanced.
- Save the mod’s readme and list every file it adds, replaces or asks you to edit.
- Do not overwrite original archives when a copy can be placed in
mods. - Keep Story Mode saves and screenshots backed up separately; a file backup is not the same as a save backup.
Use a separate mod inventory
Keep a simple inventory outside the game folder with the mod name, version, download date, supported edition, dependencies and removal steps. This turns troubleshooting into a reversible process. If the game stops launching, disable the newest change first instead of deleting random files from the installation.
Install archive mods through a mods folder
The community setup guide checked October 6, 2026 describes OpenIV as the tool for working with GTA V archives. Its purpose in this workflow is to keep modified copies separate from the originals. The exact OpenIV screens can change, so follow the current prompts shown by the tool.
- Confirm the game folder. Open the folder that contains the correct edition’s
GTA5.exe. If you have both Legacy and Enhanced installed, do not point the tool at the wrong one. - Install OpenIV for the PC edition. Start it with the game closed and select the GTA V installation you intend to mod.
- Use ASI Manager. The guide describes opening OpenIV’s ASI Manager and installing ASI Loader and OpenIV.ASI. Install only the components required by your chosen archive workflow.
- Create the
modsfolder. OpenIV can create it for you. Copy the original archive structure you need into that folder rather than editing the original archive in place. - Copy
update.rpfintomods. The guide specifically uses a copy ofupdate.rpfunder the matching path inmods. Preserve the original file outside the modded copy. - Apply the archive mod only to the copy. Follow the mod’s path exactly. A package intended for Legacy may use different paths or files from one intended for Enhanced.
- Write down the change. Record the archive path and the files added. This is the information you will need to remove the mod later.
Putting a modified archive in mods is not an online exemption by itself. It is a rollback and file-isolation technique. You still need to restore a clean configuration before connecting to GTA Online.

Install script mods only with their stated dependencies
Script mods follow a different pattern from archive replacements. The guide describes installing ScriptHookV files beside GTA5.exe. A particular mod may require only a subset of the available files, so do not copy every optional component automatically.

- Download the dependency versions named by the mod author. Do not substitute a similarly named loader without checking compatibility.
- Place the required ScriptHookV files beside the correct
GTA5.exe, following the supplied instructions. - Copy the mod’s own script and configuration files exactly where its readme specifies.
- Keep a record of every added file, including files with extensions such as
.asi,.dllor configuration formats.
Script loaders and added files are among the changes that can interfere with BattlEye. A successful Story Mode launch does not prove that the same installation is ready for online play.
Launch Story Mode and test one change at a time
After the first installation, launch Story Mode rather than GTA Online. Test the game before adding another mod. A one-change-at-a-time sequence identifies the actual cause of a crash, infinite loading screen, missing texture or script error.
- Start Story Mode and wait until the character and world load fully.
- Exercise the feature the mod changes; do not assume that reaching the menu is enough.
- Quit normally and launch again to check that the result is repeatable.
- If the game fails, remove the newest files from the
modsfolder or restore the documented backup, then test the clean baseline. - Do not proceed to GTA Online while any modded files or loaders remain active.
The guide’s recommended structure makes archive changes easier to undo: remove the modified copy from mods rather than deleting the original archive. For script mods, use the inventory you created to remove every added dependency and script.
Understand BattlEye’s Story Mode and Online roles
BattlEye is Rockstar’s anti-cheat component for GTA Online. Its FAQ, updated June 17, 2025, says BattlEye only needs to be active during online play and can be disabled for Story Mode depending on the platform: Rockstar’s GTA Online BattlEye FAQ.

Disabling BattlEye is therefore a Story Mode setting, not a way to make a modded installation acceptable for Online. Rockstar’s troubleshooting guidance says GTA Online will not connect to official servers without BattlEye. The practical states are:

The exact BattlEye switch differs by launcher and platform. Use the setting exposed by your applicable launcher rather than inventing a command-line argument. If you cannot identify the setting, leave BattlEye enabled and use a clean installation for Online.
Switch from modded Story Mode to official GTA Online
Before every Online session, perform the same deliberate transition instead of relying on memory:
- Exit the game completely. Close GTA V and the launcher. Check that no game process is still running.
- Restore the clean file state. Remove or rename the modded
modsfolder and undo script-loader and added-file changes using your inventory and backup. Do not delete original Windows or game files just because an anti-cheat message mentions them. - Check the edition and executable. Confirm that the launcher is starting the same clean Legacy or Enhanced installation you backed up. A clean Legacy folder does not make a modified Enhanced folder clean.
- Enable BattlEye. Restore the platform’s normal BattlEye setting. Rockstar says Online requires it.
- Use the normal launcher path. Start through the relevant Rockstar Games Launcher, Steam or Epic Games Launcher configuration. Avoid old launch arguments left over from Story Mode troubleshooting.
- Verify before connecting. If the launcher offers file verification, use it when the installation state is uncertain. Do not continue if ScriptHookV, ASI files or modified archives are still present.
- Connect only after the clean check. If BattlEye reports a blocked file or refuses to initialize, stop and troubleshoot rather than bypassing the warning.
To return to modded Story Mode later, exit Online, restore your documented Story Mode files and use the platform’s supported Story Mode BattlEye setting. Never use a disabled-BattlEye configuration as an attempted Online workaround.

Troubleshoot BattlEye and startup problems
BattlEye blocks bcrypt.dll
Rockstar’s blocked-file article, updated October 15, 2024, says to ensure GTA V is unmodified when using BattlEye and warns that a modded bcrypt.dll can be flagged: Rockstar’s bcrypt.dll troubleshooting article. Its explicit warning is: “Do not delete the bcrypt.dll file. It is essential for Windows to function properly.”

Do not solve this error by deleting the Windows file. Exit the game, remove the modded installation changes, restore the clean game state and launch with BattlEye enabled. If the warning persists, use the launcher’s file-repair or verification process and follow Rockstar’s current support steps.
Online will not connect after a Story Mode session
- Confirm that BattlEye is enabled in the launcher or platform setting.
- Remove ScriptHookV, ASI loaders, scripts and modified archive copies.
- Check for launch arguments that disable BattlEye or force a modded executable.
- Launch through the normal Rockstar Games Launcher, Steam or Epic Games Launcher route.
- Verify the game files if you cannot identify which change remains.

Story Mode crashes after installing a mod
- Check that the mod supports your exact edition, not just “GTA V” in general.
- Compare every dependency version with the mod’s readme.
- Remove the newest mod first and test the previous working state.
- Check that archive edits were made in the matching path under
mods. - Restore the backup if the original files were accidentally overwritten.
The mod loads in one edition but not the other
Do not copy files between Legacy and Enhanced as a compatibility experiment. The community guide does not provide a complete cross-edition compatibility catalogue; compatibility must be established separately for each mod. Keep separate inventories and, if both editions are installed, separate mod folders and backups.

For archive changes, the cleanest rollback is usually to remove the changed archive copy from mods while leaving the original installation archive intact. For script mods, remove the scripts and every dependency listed in your inventory. If you cannot account for all changes, restore the full backup or use the launcher’s verification process, then reboot before trying Online again.
Do not delete files from Windows because a game or anti-cheat message names them. In particular, the bcrypt.dll warning concerns a file that Windows needs. Treat unexplained system-file changes as a Windows troubleshooting issue, not as a mod-removal step.
A practical safety checklist
Before installing a Story Mode mod
- Confirm Legacy versus Enhanced.
- Read the mod’s edition, loader and dependency requirements.
- Back up the game and saves.
- Record the files and paths the mod will add or change.
- Plan how to remove the mod from
modsor restore the backup.
While testing Story Mode
- Install one mod or dependency group at a time.
- Keep archive edits in
mods. - Launch Story Mode first and test the feature.
- Keep BattlEye disabled only when the platform requires that setting for Story Mode and only while you remain offline.
Before launching GTA Online
- Exit the game and launcher completely.
- Restore an unmodified game setup.
- Remove or disable ScriptHookV, ASI loaders, scripts and modified archives.
- Enable BattlEye.
- Clear Story Mode launch arguments and use the normal launcher path.
- Stop if BattlEye reports a blocked file; never delete
bcrypt.dll.
Bottom line for protecting your Online access
Use mods only in an isolated PC Story Mode setup, with edition-specific files, backups and reversible changes. Keep a separate clean state for GTA Online, enable BattlEye and launch through the normal platform configuration. Rockstar’s rules make online modding the critical boundary, and BattlEye being disabled does not turn a modded installation into an Online-safe one.
